Obituary: Eugene Holt Sandlin was born on 26th 1922. Being born the day after Christmas, he was fond of joking that after his birth, his mother Minnie never believed in Santa Clause again. Gene loved to joke around and he and his older brother, Bob and the younger twins Larry and Louise, waged merry mayhem in depression-era Wortham Bend, Bosqueville, and Gholson areas of Texas. Born into a share cropping family led by his father Virgil, Gene knew long days, hard work and developed a deep appreciation for the land and farming. Although challenging at times, he had a happy childhood. However, in 1940 he left Texas for California in hopes of a better job/life and worked for two years at Lockheed.

With the outbreak of the war, Gene returned to Texas and enlisted in the Marine Corps in of 1942. Assigned to the 2nd Marine Division as a small arms mechanic, he saw extensive action in the Pacific Island hopping campaign. Specifically, he participated in the capture and occupation of the islands of Guadalcanal, Tarawa atoll, the island of Saipan and island of Tinian from of 1942 until of 1945. While home on leave, Gene married the love of his life, Edna Hopkins on 19th, 1945. Gene was discharged from the Marine Corps in of 1945 and returned to Waco, Texas by hitching a ride on a torpedo bomber. several adventures and delays, he finally arrived in Waco the day before his first son Michael Eugene was born.

Gene went to 4C Business in Waco and got a job working for the Air Force at James Connally AFB in 1949, the same year Genes second son, Patrick Hollis, joined the growing family. several years of steady promotions, Gene and Edna had an opportunity for another adventure and of course they couldn resist. So, on 17, 1955 the family set off by car on a 4,644 mile trip destined for Elmendorf AFB outside of Anchorage, Alaska. The final seven days and 1,318 miles of their adventure were on the Alaskan/Canadian (ALCAN) Highway. During that time of year and at that latitude, Gene and his family had only four hours of twilight while on the ALCAN. The rest of the days were spent in darkness.

three and a half years in Alaska, they had many more adventures and even more new friends in what became, while they were there, the countrys 49th state. But, more importantly, their daughter Kathleen arrived in 1957. In 1959, Gene and Edna retraced their steps back to Texas but, this time their travels took them, for a short time, to Laredo AFB. It was here that their fourth and final child, Noel Benjamin joined the family.

Later in 1959 Gene and Edna took their family up to Amarillo where they spent six years at Amarillo AFB before moving to the San Antonio area where they both served at Randolph AFB. finally settled (for a time) on the Guadalupe River and throughout the 1970s they took great joy in hosting family and friends for water skiing, fish fries and gravy and biscuits.

Gene loved to play golf but, as he was fond of saying, Golf did not like him. Even so, Gene regularly schooled his sons at golf. Perhaps this says more about the sons game than their fathers. Its difficult to capture the essence of what the game of golf meant to Gene. He undoubtedly loved it and spent much of his free time playing it but, to his sons, some of the most vivid and fond memories of their father are with a golf club in his hands.

It was along the Guadalupe River in 1980 that Gene retired from federal service. Just a few months later, Edna joined him in retirement - both with 32 years of service. Later that same year, Gene and Edna moved to Washington State ostensibly to escape the Texas heat but, we knew they were looking for another adventure. During their years in the Seattle area, Gene and Edna lived in Bothell, Bellevue, Whidbey Island and Port Angeles. The family joke was that they were seeing the great northwest one house at a time.

Gene and Edna returned to Texas in 1995 and set up house for a time in West, then Waco, and finally Hewitt before moving to Austin in of 2008. Gene peacefully shuffled off this mortal coil on 15, 2014. However, we just like to think hes off on another adventure, or perhaps playing golf with Jim and Glenn.

Gene was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League and the A and A Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He was also a member of the Grand Lodge of Texas and Port Angeles, WA. In addition, he was a Karem Shriner.

Gene is survived by his wife Edna, four children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Gene also had a special place in the hearts of his many sons and daughters in-laws.

The entire Sandlin family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the kind and attentive Givers at Colonial Gardens and Resolution Hospice for all that they did for Gene over his last years.

In lieu of flowers, the Sandlin family asks that you please send contributions to Marine Corps Det. 975, PO Box 7323, Waco, TX 76714. In Memory of Eugene H. Sandlin, USMC 1942-1945

A memorial service will be held on , 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills in Austin, Texas.

Obituary: The world became a little less interesting on May 14, 2015 when Edna left us to join the love of her life, Eugene. Edna was born to Willie and Bernice Hopkins on 22nd 1924 in depression era Gholson, Texas. For those whose lives she touched, she was a force of nature. She was opinionated, thoughtful, strong, loving, forthright, resilient, and irritatingly right - all the time! Edna had fiery red hair and if you got on her bad side, a temper to match. She and her brothers and sisters (Willie Jr., Charles, Kenneth, Mary Francis and Opal) knew long days, hard work and developed a deep appreciation for the land and farming. The family moved from Gholson to Chalk Bluff then Elm Mott, and she graduated from La Vega High School in Bellmead, Texas in 1942. High School, she completed a stenography certification (early, of course) from the 4C Business in Waco then went to work at the Waco Army Air Base in 1943.

On 19th, 1945 Edna married Eugene Sandlin while he was home on leave from the Marine Corps. It was a brave, new and adventurous world in 1945 so, while Gene reported back for duty to San Diego, Edna went to work for Lockheed Aircraft Co. and then Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Co. Later that year, Edna returned to Waco pregnant with the couples first child. Gene was discharged from the Marine Corps in of 1945 and returned to Waco, Texas by hitching a ride on a torpedo bomber. several adventures and delays, he finally arrived home to Edna the day before their first son Michael Eugene was born.

While Gene went to 4C Business , Edna worked at the VA Hospital supporting their young family. When Gene got a job at James Connally AFB in 1947, Edna transferred to join him in 1949. This is the same year Ednas second son, Patrick Hollis, joined the growing family two months early - Edna had decided to rearrange some furniture in the couples new apartment. several years of steady promotions, Edna and Gene had an opportunity for another adventure and of course they couldn resist. So, on 17, 1955 the family set off by car on a 4,644 mile trip destined for Elmendorf AFB outside of Anchorage, Alaska. The final seven days and 1,318 miles of their adventure were on the Alaskan/Canadian (ALCAN) Highway. Did we mention that Edna was incredibly creative? Her creativity was not limited to cooking, gardening, and singing, although she excelled at all three. It also extended to knitting, crocheting and embroidery in the making of quilts, afghans, Christmas stockings, sweaters, or anything else that she took a shine to. These heirlooms are now sprinkled throughout the family and we cherish them all - even the spectacularly colorful hand knitted wash cloths. Or maybe, especially the colorful wash cloths. You see, Red never made anything that didn have some practical or utilitarian use. Oh sure, she might jazz it up with vibrant yarn, an imaginative design or even a sequin or two but, you can bet the bank that this child of the depression didn waste her time on anything that was frivolous. Well, okay, maybe playing tea with the grandkids, well give you that. She was a rare talent that was bundled into a 52, red headed, buck-ten frame that seemed to be in perpetual motion.
It was along the Guadalupe River in 1980 that first Gene and then Edna retired from federal service - both with 32 years of service. Later that same year, Edna and Gene moved to Washington State, ostensibly to escape the Texas heat but, we knew they were looking for another adventure. Edna and Gene returned to Texas in 1995 and set up house for a time in West, then Waco, and finally Hewitt before moving to Austin in of 2008. Edna peacefully departed our company on May 14, 2015. However, we just like to think shes once again hand-in-hand with Gene and off on another adventure.

Edna was preceded by her husband Eugene and is survived by her four children, ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Edna also had a very special place in the hearts of her many daughters and sons in-laws.

Edna was a member of the Marine Corps League and the Bellmead Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Hatasu Temple Number One in Seattle, WA.

The entire Sandlin family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the kind and attentive friends and Givers at Highland Estates Retirement Community continued...
