Obituary: How do you write an obit for the love of your life? Never thought about that until now that its time. Ill start with the facts: Samuel (Sambo) David Brown, Jr. was called home to Glory on , 9. He was the first child of Lois Rabon and David Brown and entered this earthly home in Conroe Texas on 9, 1945. From the age of two, Sambo was cared for and raised by his grandmother, Mattie Rabon. Sambo and I met in Conroe High School at the beginning of his senior year. We started dating in of 1963 and never looked back! We have celebrated that anniversary for 52 years and our love story will be forever written on my heart. Those he leaves behind are me, Willa Nettles Brown and our children and 8 grandchildren: Christin Gilkeson and her husband Tom, Scott Brown and his wife Alison, Andy Brown and his wife Lisa. He enjoyed letting everyone know he had 6 children. He never considered Tom, Alison and Lisa in-laws! Sams go-to word for so many happenings and occasions was OUTSTANDING. He proclaimed that word at the news of the birth of each of his precious Grands: Connor, Rachele, Austin, Olivia, Alyssa, Kaitlyn, Tyler and Anna. adored their Pawpaw and the feeling was mutual, including a billfold full of photos he would share with anybody! Those babes were his pride and joy. Sam (as I quickly learned to call him when we were stationed at his first assignment in Ogden Utah - Hello, can I speak to Lieutenant Sambo Brown - did not go over well) graduated from Conroe High School, class of 1964. He began his studies in pre-engineering at Sam Houston State (before SHSU) and transferred to the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M the second semester of his sophomore year. He was offered a commission with the USAF and graduated as a Distinguished Military Student with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering on May 25, 1968. One week later he and I were married and moved to Ogden UT. He promised me we would only be away from our beloved Texas for 4 years. However, three years into that assignment he was chosen to attend Southern Methodist University in an Air Force program to obtain his masters degree in Business Education. He informed me (lovingly, of course) that by accepting that assignment BACK TO TEXAS we would have a few more years tacked on to his commitment to the Air Force. I realized then and there that we were in it for the long haul. And what a fabulous life it was for our children and us. He liked to say he flew a desk because when folks learned he was in the Air Force they wanted to know what kind of plane he flew. Flew a desk indeed..first in Utah, then the education assignment in Dallas, then to Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton OH, on to Eglin AFB in Fort Walton Beach FL, followed by an assignment at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, back to Wright Patt and finally ending up in Washington D.C in 1995. He retired as a colonel in 1998 after 30 years on active duty receiving throughout those 30 years numerous decorations, medals, citations and campaign ribbons. His retirement was one to be remembered as he was retired by the Vice Chief of Staff of the AF at the time, General Joe Ralston. He began his retirement by accepting a contracting job with a local defense company and ended up working at the Pentagon for the Under Secretary of the Air Force, a place he had managed to avoid during his active duty days. Sam was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2009. That disease attacked his lungs and caused him to develop Interstitial Lung Disease. In , 2014 he received a single lung transplant in Virginia. We were able to move back home to Texas in of 2014 and enjoyed each moment of the extra 17 months the Lord gave us. It was complications from a rejection that occurred 15 months after the transplant that sent him to the arms of his Savior. He was a man of God, a loving and precious husband and dad and the best Pawpaw around for his Grands! He was outstanding! A celebration of Sams life will be held on , 13 at 2:00PM, at Metcalf Directors. The family will be available for hugs, kisses and Sambo/Sam stories at 1:00 before the celebration begins. Interment will be at Arlington National . |
