Obituary: Eugenia Sakellariou "Jenny"Jenny Sakellariou, 90, a resident of San Angelo for 70 years, died 26, in Waxahachie following surgery. Jenny was well known to many area residents because of her long association with the San Angelo Standard-Times, where she held the distinction of being the longest-serving employee in the newspapers history. Jenny was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Feb. 8, 1927 to the Reverend Daniel Sakellariou and his wife, Presvetera Ethel, both born in Greece, becoming the third child of the couple, along with brother Andrew, and sister Faye. Her father was an ordained priest of the Greek Orthodox Church, and his work took the family to several locations through the course of his career. It eventually brought him to serve in San Angelo, TX. Jenny went to work as the first teletype operator at the newspaper on Dec. 31, 1946, and publisher Houston Harte was later quoted saying that she learned to use the complex machine with amazing speed. Jenny developed a reputation among her coworkers for being a hard worker - and a stickler for details - and her leadership was recognized by peers, as she advanced to running the community services desk. During her tenure in that role, Jenny trained many clerks who went on to successful careers in news, and left a legacy of diligent service that is remembered by all who worked with her. 55 years of dedicated service to the San Angelo Standard Times Jenny retired on 31, 2001. With a strong tradition of service in her family, Jenny was unlikely to rest idle, and she redirected her energies toward volunteer work, finding a new group of friends at San Angelos Meals for the Elderly in of 2002. Where she went on to work 4,000 hours by 2014. She was recognized by the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and she volunteered with Meals for nearly 15 years altogether.Throughout her life, Jenny especially loved attending services at Assumption Parish. Following in her parents footsteps, service to the church and its members was her priority, and she served on the Parish Council, sang in the choir, and cared for the building for decades. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.Jenny was preceded in death by her father and mother, and her brother and sister. She is survived by niece Christina Hochleutner, and her daughters Andrea and Paula; great-niece Jennifer Mandell and husband Jimmy Henderson and daughters Zoe, Sophia, Olivia and Hadley Rose, and a great-great-great niece, Stella; nephew Melvin Anderson, and his daughter, Amanda, and her daughters, Aeva, Emmie and Alexin. A Trisagion service is set for 5 p.m., , 30, 2017 at Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 801 Montecito Drive. The funeral will take place 10 a.m. , May 1, at the church, with interment to follow at Fairmont .Final services will be conducted by Fr. Mark Lichtenstein assisted by Fr. James Hademenos.Pallbearers are Ezekiel Choate, John Choate, Jimmy Henderson, Ron Juhl, Matthew McDaniel and John Wimberley.Honorary Pallbearers are Tim Beys, Johnny Kalaitzes, John Kouvelis and Steve Tefas.
The family would like Jennys devoted friends, Gloria Hollis, and the staff at Senior of San Angelo for the love and kindness they have shown. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to encourage friends to consider making a memorial contribution to Meals for the Elderly or Assumption Parish.
