Obituary: Rev. Roger C. Prefontaine SSS comes from a family that gave three priests to the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. Father Prefontaine has three brothers and two sisters who have preceded him in death and a sister, Gertrude Fournier, presently living in Oklahoma. He entered the formation programs of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in 1940 and was ordained a priest on 19, 1953 in Providence, RI. From 1954 until 1962, Father Prefontaine was a high school teacher and treasurer of Eymard Seminary in Hyde Park, NY. In 1962, during the Second Vatican Council, he was summoned to Rome by the Superior General of the Congregation where he served in various capacities at the General Headquarters in Rome and the International Seminary and spoke fluent Italian and French. Eventually Father Prefontaine was elected Treasurer General of the Congregation worldwide, a post in which he served until 1975. Although he loved the city Rome, its people and its culinary delicacies, he willingly returned to the USA after thirteen years to take on various pastoral assignments: Broadalbin, NY – pastor; Chicago - associate pastor and treasurer; Albuquerque, NM – associate pastor and superior; Houston - pastor; San Antonio, TX – semi-retirement. Father Prefontaine will be remembered as a peoples’ priest and a good pastor. His kindness and interest in people and their situations made him well loved wherever he was called to serve. His gentleness and jovial spirit made him an asset to the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. Even in his semi-retirement, Father Prefontaine continued to offer his services for his religious community, doing the grocery shopping and preparing meals. Father Roger always has a kind word for everyone. In recent years Father Roger quietly and optimistically suffered from heart problems which eventually led to his death. His patience and silence in the midst of suffering were an example for all. Father Prefontaine will be interred in Cleveland, Ohio. |
