Obituary: Seivers, Edna Mae Wallace, passed away , 11, 2015, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the age of 91. Mrs. Seivers was born 13, 1923, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Zylpha Arabelle Caldwell and Fred Roy Wallace. Edna and her two brothers grew up on their historic 550 acre family dairy farm, Maple Hill Farm, which was in her family for five generations. Maple Hill Dairy/Farm was located at 203 Merchants Road, at the location that is now the area around I-75 Merchants Road exit. She and her brothers spent their early days working with their parents on the dairy farm. Edna donated her family cider mill press, purchased by Robert Wallace in 1885 for $2, to historic Ramsey House in 1968. Edna attended Central High School and The University of Tennessee. She lived with her Aunt Cora Wallace Schubert near the UT Campus while attending UT. During World War II Edna worked in an insurance office. Six years later she took a position in the Personnel Department of a hosiery mill in Clinton, TN. There she met her husband, Charles Edward Seivers, and they were married 30, 1950, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Edna worked at Oak Ridge, TN in 1952, in one of the scientific plants operated for the Atomic Energy Commission, and retired in 1967. She and Charles enjoyed owning and flying a Cessna-140 for 12 years, and they flew all over the southeast together. were avid boaters for more than 40 years, sharing great times on their houseboats with church family and friends, traveling to UT football games, and cruising 850 miles on the Tennessee River going to the Tombigbee. docked their boats at Concord Marina since the late 1960's. Edna was instrumental in getting MPC and Knoxville to approve the new Concord Marina, which she and Charlie documented in photos and time lines as it was being built. Edna and Charles supported safe-boating classes for over 30 years through the Oak Ridge Power Squadron, where Charles served as Port Captain for Fort Loudon and Tellico Lakes. She was an active member of the Scottish Society Clan Wallace, participating in the annual Scottish Festival and Parade for many years. She was given Lifetime membership in Clan Wallace Society 22, 1989. Edna and Charles lived in Suburban Hills after moving from the Wallace home place Maple Hill Farm. Obituary: Bena Mae Seivers 30, 1927- 14, 2016 My Mom, Brought to us as Bena Mae Estep, one of 10 or 11 siblings of Hobert and Elizabeth Estep and raised in Corbin, Kentucky. Her family was brought to Clinton, Tennessee for the Manhattan Project in 1943. She went to Clinton High School where one of her classmates sent her picture to his friend, Raymond Seivers who was serving in the Army. Although he had not met Bena Mae, Raymond carried her picture in his wallet throughout England, France and Germany. From Omaha Beach to the Battle of the Bulge her picture was with him. the w ar, Bena Mae saw Raymond on the street and the first thing that she thought was that he was going to be her future husband. Serendipity, they were married and moved to a flat top on Iona Circle in Oak Ridge in 1952. moving back to Clinton, Bena Mae was active in politics. She took Albert Gore Sr. on a tour of Anderson during his first run for the Senate. She took him to the courthouse and the Andersonville General Store. all, she would say, no one should be elected Senator from Tennessee without a visit to the Andersonville General Store. She worked at the courthouse as the Administrative Assistant to the Sheriff keeping active in liberal politics for many years. David McCoy and her brother, Don Estep encouraged her to write articles for their newspapers and 25 years ago, her career as a writer began. She wrote weekly and monthly articles for several publications. In print, she had a gentle sense of humor with an eye for nostalgia. In person, her sense of humor was not always that gentle. Her column, Simple Pleasures and her book of the same name gave her an outlet to comment on things that she found interesting and to tell stories that she found amusing. She was born a God fearing Baptist but later became a God loving Methodist. She loved the people in the Methodist Church in Clinton and it became her home away from home for many years. She left this world peacefully from complications of her leukemia. She leaves her son Steve and his wife, Kathy and son Sam, her brother, Don Estep and her niece Brenda Rains. We loved her so much and will miss her company. The family will receive friends , 20th, from 5-7 PM at Holley-Gamble in Clinton. Holley-Gamble is in charge of arrangements. www.holleygamble.com |
