Obituary: Ruby Melaine (Baxa) Stevicks was born on 13, 1925 in their farm house in Dixon, SD to John and Nettie (Konop) Baxa. Ruby was the oldest of three children. In 1935 she moved with her family to a farm two miles west of Burke. The family then moved in 1938 to a farm southeast of Herrick where she grew up helping on the farm and attending grade school. While attending high school in St. Charles, she was a member of the band and played clarinet. In 1940 Ruby met Roy at a dance in Herrick. Roy commented to a friend He would like to put her in his pocket and take her home with him. This was the start of the relationship. Roy and Ruby were married on 11, 1941 in Butte, NE. Due to the time of year with work needing to be done, they waited to have their reception and dance until 6, 1941. Ruby and Roy lived with his parents Charles and Nora when first married. There they had three children—Sharon, Norma, and Gloria. In 1947, Ruby and Roy moved their family to the Hasche farm southwest of Burke. Ruby and Roy had five more children—Roy, Karen, Debbie, Renee, and Rhonda. farmed and raised their family. Ruby raised chickens, milked cows, and made homemade butter and bread. She sewed many of the familys clothes. Ruby did many haircuts and perms for family and friends. Most never knew, but Ruby was able to play the piano by ear. Her children would sing a song and she could play it. Ruby enjoyed spending time with her family and friends visiting and laughing. Ruby enjoyed bowling, gardening and spending time in her flower garden. Ruby was a great cook and everyone enjoyed her fried chicken or fried fish that Roy would catch. In 1985 Ruby and Roy moved from the Hasche farm to their son Roys farm a mile northeast. Roy and Ruby moved into a new home on the land there. Over the next 29 years, Ruby spent her retirement cooking, sewing, gardening, and enjoying her grandchildren. She was a member of her neighborhood Hy-Hopes Club. She loved a cup of her cowboy coffee. She enjoyed attending the Burke Baptist church and was baptized on 15, 1996. The family heard many times, Your Mom is like a second mom to me. In 2013 Ruby moved to TLC where she and Roy got to be together until Roy passed away on Christmas Day 2013. One highlight of living in TLC was spending time with her brother Duane. In , due to declining health Ruby was admitted into the Burke Community Hospital. Ruby passed away on May 31, 2016 at the Burke Community Hospital at 90 years old. Ruby and Roy were married 72 incredible years. Ruby was a wonderful, loving mother who cherished her eight children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Ruby lived a good, loving life and saw many sad and wonderful events. She experienced so much, was loved by many, and will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy in 2013, brother Bernard Baxa, infant daughter Sharon, daughter Gloria, son-in-law Robert Antrim, grandson John, and great-grandchildren Rhadd, Jayden, and Ranya. Ruby is survived by her children: Norma Antrim of Faith, SD, Roy A. (Betty) Stevicks of Burke, SD, Karen (Glenn) Gilbert of Gillette,WY, Debbie Hoffman of Gillette, WY, Renee (Todd) Cook of Mills, NE, and Rhonda (Shane) Ehnes of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, brother Duane Baxa of Burke, SD, sister-in-law Marilyn Baxa of Herrick and many relatives and friends. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * services for Ruby Stevicks, 90, were held , 4, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the Civic in Burke, SD with Pastor Mark Tuttle officiating. Music was provided by Jane Tuttle, pianist, and Mark Tuttle, soloist, singing You are My Sunshine and If You Could See Me Now. Don & Betty Stevicks and James & Darnytia Kucera were in charge of registration. Casket Bearers were Ronnie Bohnet, Jackson Wenger, Roy Stevicks, Brian Gilbert, Terry Smith, TJ Cook, and Trenton Ehnes. Honorary Casket Bearers were Rubys grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren--Robert Antrim, Ruby Maki, Rashell Lemmel, Roy Antrim, Richard Volk, Volk, Shelby Bertram, Jerrod Wenger, Lorie Raschke, Glorie Stevicks, Tammy Oliver, Ray Stevicks, Ted Stevicks, Sandy McPartland, Mary Hosfold, Lee Stevicks, Anne Stevicks, Teresa Reimers, Rachel Hoffman, Rocky Hoffman, Scott Gilbert, Becky Hoffine, Shelley Heath, Tracy Dehning, Stacy Anderson, and Logan Ehnes. Interment was in the Graceland , Burke, SD. |
