Obituary: Janet was born 26, 1910, on the family farm near Naper, NE to parents, Frank and Anastasia Cerny. She was the youngest of ten children (four boys and six girls) born on the homestead and the only child not born in the sod house on the farm. She entered the world in the house they built shortly before Janets birth. Janets mother died when she was seven years old. Along with her father, her sisters helped raise her. Janet attended Catholic grade school and high school in Butte NE. She then attended Wayne Teachers and received her teaching certificate. She started teaching at a country school near Naper, NE at age 17. During the span of her teaching career, she taught at Lynch and Spencer, NE and Burke, Dallas, Bonesteel, and Gregory, SD retiring after 26 years and her marriage to Emil Sattler on 29, 1953. She continued to substitute teach after retirement. Janet met Emil 25 years earlier when she was teaching near Naper and boarding at his brothers home. Emil and his wife, Elsie, had three children before her death in 1946, which Janet helped raise. Before Emils death in 1975, they took many trips around the country as well as a special trip to Rome, Italy. Janet had the reputation of being an excellent teacher and continued to hear from former students until her passing. She played both the violin and piano and entertained on the piano on her 100th birthday. She was honored on her 100th birthday by Governor Rounds in proclaiming 26, 2010 as Janet Sattler Day in South Dakota. Janet was a devout Catholic her entire life. Her attendance at Mass and receiving the holy Eucharist was most important to her. In keeping with her faith, she headed the CCD program for St. Josephs youth for many years and was an active member of the Catholic Daughters, holding most of the local offices. She received her 60 year pin in 2014. Janet passed away , 18, 2014 at Rosebud Country at the age of 104. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters, husband Emil, stepson Donald, daughter-in-law Kay Sattler, and son-in-law Bill Curtis. Janet is survived by her stepson Arthur (Betty) Sattler of Winner, SD/ Eastvale, CA, stepdaughter Mary Curtis of Blue Springs, MO, stepdaughter-in-law Wanda Sattler, Anderson, SC, grandchildren, Cynthia Sattler Arroyo, Sunnyslope, CA, Steven Sattler, Laguna Nigel, CA, Michael (Erika) Sattler, Eastvale, CA, Jill (Mark) Larsen, Placentia, CA, Janette (Thom) McCord, Blue Springs, MO, Rojan (Doug) Ballenger, Seneca SC, and several great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed having company and visiting with those who stopped to see her. She will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched, especially Pat and Ken Cerny and JoAnn Jons and family who were faithful visitors. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A Mass of Christian Burial for Janet Sattler of Gregory, SD was held , 22, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gregory with Father Godfrey Muwanga, Celebrant. A Christian Wake service was held evening at the church. Music was provided by Katie Opp, pianist. Soloist Betty Sattler sang Mother at your Feet is Kneeling and Ave Maria. St. Joseph Choir sang Prayer of Saint Francis, One Communion of Love, and The Song of Farewell. Congregational song was I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say. Altar Servers were Joseph Veskrna and Ryan Taggart. Eucharistic Ministers were Al Cerny, Ken Cerny, and Pat Cerny. Lector was Eugene Cerny. Cantor was Doris Jelinek. Gift Bearers were Jim and Mabel Sattler. Pat Cerny was in charge of registration. Casket Bearers were Ken Cerny, Al Cerny, Jim Sattler, Cynthia Sattler Arroyo, Janette McCord, and Don VanCleave. Burial was in St. Joseph Catholic , Gregory, SD. Memorial gifts will be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Obituary: Ada Alice (Hutchison) Sattler was born on May 10, 1913 to Owen and Letitia (Palmer) Hutchison. She was the ninth of ten children. lived on their homestead four miles east of Gregory. She attended the Rhoades School which was one and a half miles away through the third grade. Ada walked to school with her sister Ann. One of her earliest memories that stayed with her throughout her life happened when she was five years old. Her oldest brother Alfred was killed in France in 1918 during the First World War. That same year her youngest brother who was 18 months old drowned in a stock tank. Ada had vivid memories of the difficult times her family went through. When the Hutchison children got older, her father purchased a house and barn in Gregory across from the city park. lived in town during the school year and on the farm in the summer time. Ada was a senior in high school when the school burned down. She graduated in 1932. graduation she worked as a secretary for Judge Alfred Strand during the week and real estate agent Louie Matejka on the weekends. Ada met her future husband Henry Sattler when she was taking the county eighth grade exams. Years later they began a courtship after meeting each other at a dance. Henry proposed to Ada two and a half years later at the annual Fairfax celebration. were married on 5, 1935. It was in the middle of the Great Depression so when the couple heard there were jobs in California they decided to go there. Henry worked in a winery and Ada worked in a cannery. In the spring of 1938 they drove a 1928 Chevy Coach back to South Dakota for a visit. During their visit Henrys father passed away and his mother asked him to stay. stayed on the farm and Ada lived the life of a farmers wife—milking cows, raising chickens, and caring for the pigs. She and Henry enjoyed going to dances throughout their marriage. had many friends and enjoyed visiting and playing cards. Ada and Henry had three daughters—Joyce in 1938, Barbara in 1941, and Alice in 1944. have eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Henry and Ada retired in 1986 and moved to Gregory. Henry died in 1992. Ada was active in the UCC Ladies Aid, a 4-H Clover Leader, and Jolly Workers Club. Ada enjoyed knitting, gardening, and reading every page of the Gregory Times-Advocate and Mitchell Daily Republic newspapers. In 2000 Ada became one of the first residents of Silver Threads and it was her home until she passed away. Ada really appreciated all the efforts of Jo Wulf and her wonderful helpers. became her second family. God blessed Ada with many years and she blessed her family with her love, her wisdom, and her optimism. Last May after the party celebrating her 101st birthday she told us that we needed to start planning the party for her 102nd birthday. That was the spirit of Ada. Ada passed away on 22, 2015 at Avera Gregory Hospital at the age of 101. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry, her parents, seven brothers Alfred, Lloyd, Leonard, John, Demas, Lawrence, and Hugh, two sisters Cora Clough and Ann Sinclair, son-in-law David Jacobsen, and great grandson Kirk Kahler. She is survived by three daughters Joyce (Donald J.) Stukel of Burke, SD, Barbara Sattler and special friend Bill Allum of LaFeria, TX, and Alice Jacobsen of Dallas, SD; eight grandchildren Donald (Laurie) Stukel , Jeanne (George) Belcher, John (Geri) Stukel, Jennifer (Jerry) Penry, Sheila (Brad) Kahler, Mark (Kristen) Jacobsen, Sandra (Mark) Fortuna, and Michael Jacobsen (Amy Bartling); 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. * * * * * * * * * * * * * services for Ada Sattler were held , 26, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Union Congregational Church in Gregory, SD with Pastor Tim Voigt officiating. A prayer service was held evening at the church. Music was provided by DeNalda Fortuna, organist and Jeanie Kotrba, pianist. Congregational hymns were Rock of Ages and How Great Thou Art. Geoff Smith sang Beyond the Sunset. Kristen Jacobsen and Laurie Stukel were in charge of registration. Flower attendants were Jennifer Penry, Sheila Kahler, and Sandra Fortuna. Casket Bearers were Don Stukel, Jeanie Belcher, John Stukel, Jennifer Penry, Sheila Kahler, Mark Jacobsen, Sandra Fortuna, and Michael Jacobsen. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. , Gregory, SD.
