Obituary: Lewis N. Speer, 80, of Lowndesville, husband of the late Shirley Davis Speer, died , 31, 2015 at the Abbeville . He was born in Abbeville to the late Beverly Henry Speer and Eva Cann Speer. Mr. Speer proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Jackson Mill in Iva and was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church. Mr. Speer was an avid NASCAR fan. Jeff Gordon was his favorite driver and his winning was a source of much pleasure. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Baker Speer and a sister, Alice Ashley. Mr. Speer is survived by a brother, Ben Speer and his wife Carol of Abbeville; two sisters, Helen Speer of Abbeville and Beverly Willis of Bentonia, Mississippi; a very close, special friend, Connie Powell and her family of Lowndesville and a favorite niece Betty White also of Lowndesville. The family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 3:00PM , 2, 2015 at Harris . services will begin on , 2 at 3:30PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Scotty Willoughby officiating. Burial will follow in the Smyrna United Methodist Church cemetery. Obituary: James Baker Speer, 88, of Abbeville, husband of the late Mary Young Speer, died , 28, 2015. Mr. Speer was born in Abbeville to the late Beverly and Eva Cann Speer. Mr. Speer was a WWII Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked at the Milliken-Abbeville Plant for 15 years and retired from the Monsanto Plant after 23 years of dedicated service. Mr. Speer was a member of the Cold Spring Chapel and a former member of the Rough House Coffee Club. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Ashley. Mr. Speer is survived by his daughter, Brenda Ellenburg of Abbeville; two brothers, Lewis Speer of Lowndesville, SC and Ben Speer and his wife Carol of Abbeville; two sisters, Helen Speer of Abbeville and Beverly Willis of Bentonia, MS; two grandchildren, Andy and Greg Ellenburg; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Micah, and Jaiden; brother-in-law, Arthur Young of Abbeville; special caregiver, Wayne Phillips of Abbeville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Obituary: Walter Raymond Speelman, 89, of Isle Of Palms, South Carolina, husband of Ruth Mignon Docterman Speelman died , 2, 2014. The relatives and friends of Walter R. Speelman are invited to attend his Memorial Service on , 7, 2014 in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 2:00 PM. Inurnment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1303 Mathis Ferry Road. Walter was born May 19, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Walter Raymond Speelman and the late Celina Dulong Speelman. He was barely 18 years old and drafted to fight in World War II in 1943 in the United States Army. He landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy shortly after D-Day, where his Battalion traveled across France to the Ardennes Forest Region of Belgium, to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. the defeat of this battle, which was considered by many, as the turning point in WWII, his Battalion encountered a concentration camp where they were able to free hundreds of imprisoned American Soldiers, that had been left to die by the fleeing Germans. His service continued after the War, by volunteering with The Red Ball Express to help clean up the country. When he returned home, he met the love of his life, Mignon Docterman, on a blind date in Detroit. He worked as a Truck Driver and was a member of the Teamsters for over 30 years. He retired and moved to the Isle of Palms, SC in 1997. He was a member of the: V.F.W. Post 10624 in Mt. Pleasant, USS Yorktown CV-10 Association, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, SC Chapter and Keen-agers on the Isle of Palms. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mignon Speelman of Isle of Palms, two sons, Gary Speelman and his wife, Cheryl, of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Mark Speelman of West Bloomfield, MI; one daughter, Nancy Darling of Crossville, TN; four grandchildren, Tiffany Suggs, Lisa Lazo, Trevor Speelman, and Melanie Speelman; and two great grandchildren, Grady Speelman and Thaddeus Suggs. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to V.F.W. Post 10624, 1411 Stuart Engals Blvd., Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. |
