Obituary: George E. Sons

LEXINGTON \ A memorial service for George E. Sons, 80, will be held at 11:00 a.m. , 9, 2014 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service in the church. Caughman-Harman , Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mr. Sons was born 24, 1934 in Lexington, SC and passed away on , 29 2014. He was a son of the late Jacob Lester Sons and Essie L. Arnold Sons. Mr. Sons was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and retired from Western Electric (AT&T/Lucent) as a telephone equipment installer after 38 years of service. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Marine Corp. George was a member of the American Legion Post 7 serving as Past Commander and Adjutant. He enjoyed working in his yard and garden and also tending to his goats and donkey.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Areheart Wingard Sons of Lexington; sons, Woody (Stephanie) Sons of Mt. Pleasant; Rodney and Lewis Wingard of Lexington, Donald (Adriana) Wingard of Georgetown; granddaughters, Alicia and Emma Wingard of Lexington, whom he adored very much; sisters, Ruth Koon, Marjorie Carter, Mary Green and Ann Watkins all of Lexington; brothers, Donnie (Shirley) Sons, Fred (Shirlean) Sons all of Lexington, James (Olene) Sons of St. Andrews; sister-in-law, Effie Sons of West Columbia and brother-in-law, Dick Yarbourgh of Pendleton. He was predeceased by his brothers, Johnny, Walter and Franklin Sons and sister, Minnie Lee Yarborough.

He is survived by his wife, Vickie, of 46 years, a daughter, Karen Songer and son Andy Songer, 6 grandchildren, 3 honorary grandchildren, Seth, Griffin, Kirsten, Haley, Kaitlyn, Landon, Bryce, Emma, and Harper. 1 sister, Mary Williams & 2 brothers Tommy and Clifford Songer.

He was born 21, 1946 in Charleston, SC, son of the late Clifford & Ethel Songer, also of North Charleston. He served in the US Navy before retiring from the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He then spent many years working at Sam’s Club and he was an active member of Charleston Calvary Church of the Nazarene.

He loved to fish, play softball, & watch his favorite sports teams (Gamecocks, Panthers, Atlanta Braves, & any sport his grandchildren were playing). What he enjoyed most was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Obituary: A Celebration of Life for Donald Raymond Songer, Ph.D., 70, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on , 3, 2015, at Ashland United Methodist Church, 2600 Ashland Road, Columbia, SC 29210. A reception will follow in Ashland Hall. Dunbar , Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, is assisting the family.

Dr. Songer passed away , 29, 2015. Born in Miami, FL, he was a son of the late Gerald Raymond Songer and Elizabeth Curran Songer. He was a graduate and Salutatorian of Miami High; Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Florida, where he received his B.A. and M.A. in Political Science; and received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Dr. Songer was an active member of Ashland United Methodist Church where he taught adult School class for 25 years; was a featured children’s Bible story teller; and led missions initiatives including Seeds of Hope Farmers’ Market. He was active in the community, coaching youth soccer and basketball; teaching at the Shepherd’s ; and serving as a Reading Buddy at Seven Oaks Elementary School.

Dr. Songer was also involved in community theatre, performing in over 30 shows at Town Theatre, Village Square Theatre and others; favorite roles were Norman Thayer in On Golden Pond, Father in Cheaper by the Dozen, and Pirate in Peter Pan.

Dr. Songer taught at the University of South Carolina since 1986 and was a Professor of Political Science at the University at the time of his death. He taught previously at Oklahoma Baptist University, Macon Junior , and Meredith . He researched and wrote extensively about the United States Courts of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Canada, and other appellate courts in the Americas and the Common Law world. Dr. Songer authored or co-authored several books, including Continuity and Change on the United States Courts of Appeals, The Transformation of the Supreme Court of Canada, and The View from the Bench and Chambers: Examining Judicial Process and Decision Making on the U.S. Courts of Appeals. In addition, he published over 75 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals such as the American Political Science Review, the Journal of Politics, and Law and Society Review.

Professor Songer brought almost $2 million in funded research grants to the University of South Carolina. During his tenure at USC, he received numerous awards, including the American Political Science Association Law & Courts Section’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2015); Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award (1993, 2003, 2008, 2014); Michael A. Hill Honors Outstanding Faculty Award; and USC Educational Foundation Award for Research in the Social Sciences and Humanities.

Dr. Songer mentored numerous graduate students at USC who went on to faculty positions at colleges such as Michigan State University, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Georgia. Under Dr. Songer’s leadership, the public law program at USC was ranked in the top five in the United States.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Valorie Marlow Songer; children, Michael Johnson Songer (Erica) of Washington, DC and Julie Songer Belman (Travis) of Winnsboro. He is also survived by his grandson, James Glenn Belman; brother, Richard Noble Songer (Carol); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Songer Finch.

Sidney Eugene Son, 69, of Charleston, SC died , 15, 2017 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Jennie Moody Son and four children Dina Boone (Bruce), Sidney Eugene Son, Jr., Karrie Allen (Clayton), Robert Matthew Son (Amy) and four grandchildren, Jennie Boone, AJ Allen, Ryan Son and Joshua Taylor. He was preceded in death by his parents: James Simeon Son and Dovie Steadman Son and brother: James Albert Son.



Sid was an independent paint contractor and did repairs on homes and businesses. He and his wife owned House of Paints on James Island for twenty-seven years. He loved family get togethers and his truck. Sid loved sports, especially football, college basketball, and golf. He coached Little League Baseball when his children were younger. In his younger years he also loved to fish and hunt. He was a 3rd degree Mason.

In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren he leaves three sisters, Ruth Ellen Son Wilson, Ethel Elizabeth Son Brewer, and Wanda Frances Son Pruitt and many nieces and nephews.
