Obituary: Rebecca Broyles Douthit SloneHartsville, SC
Rebecca B. Douthit Slone, widow of Allen R Slone, MD, passed away peacefully on , 17, 2016, at her home in Hartsville, SC.  Becky was born on 14, 1920 in Anderson , SC on her father’s farm, Seedland Farm.  She was the only  child of the late Joseph B and Mary B Douthit.
She attended Lebanon School and graduated from Anderson Girl’s High in Anderson, SC in 1938 and from Winthrop in 1942 with a degree in Mathematics.  She taught school in Belton, SC and Greenwood, SC.  teaching for 3 years she was an American Red Cross recreation worker for the veterans in Tennessee and South Carolina.  During her school years she traveled to school first in a one horse covered wagon made by her father, then drove an automobile to Anderson, and finally took the train to Winthrop.
attending Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanstan, Illinois, she began working at Bethel Methodist Church in Spartanburg, SC, as the Director of Christian Education.  During her 2 years at Bethel, she met her future husband, Allen R Slone.  She and Allen married 7, 1948.  had 4 children, lived in Charleston, Florence, and Hartsville, SC.  She and Allen were married for 60 years.
Becky was always very active in her church.  She was a member of St Luke United Methodist Church in Hartsville.  She volunteered her time to teach School, serve on church boards and committees, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
She loved to read, work crossword puzzles, and play on her computer, but one of her greatest loves was for gardening and taking care of her plants.  You can take the girl off the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the girl!  She was a life-long avid Clemson fan and wore her orange and purple proudly. (She was even known to help pull the tigers through on occasion, most recently the Clemson/N C State game this past !)
Surviving are her three children Susan Douthit Slone of Denver, NC; Mary Louise Slone Finklea of Florence, SC; and John Allen Slone and his wife, Linda, of Rock Hill, SC.  She was preceeded in death by her eldest daughter, Rebecca Douthit Slone Hogan.  She is also survived by four grandchildren, Joseph Benjamin Finklea and Thomas Alan Finklea and his wife Emily of Florence, SC;  Travis Allen Slone of Rock Hill, SC., and Lainey Nicole Slone of Plano, TX.  One of the greatest joys she had during the last 17 months was the time she spent with her only great grandchild, Jacqueline Claire Finklea.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 am , 19, 2016, in Anderson at the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church .  The family requests memorials be sent to the Epworth Children’s , PO Box 50466, Columbia, SC  29250 in lieu of flowers.

Obituary: Allen R Slone, MD, husband of Rebecca Douthit Slone, passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, 27, 2008 at the United Methodist Manor in Florence, SC. Allen was born 11, 1925. He was the son of the late John Cooper and Louise Robertson Slone of Alabama. He was an eagle scout and graduated from Winfield High School in Winfield, Alabama in 1943. He earned his BS in Chemistry from Wofford in 1949, his MS degree in Chemistry from Clemson University in 1951, and his MD degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1955. He served in the US Navy during WWII as a Navy corpsman attached to the Marines. He was stationed in the Pacific and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and a WWII ribbon with four battle stars. He completed his residency and internship at McLeod Infirmary in Florence, SC. He had a private medical practice in Florence from 1956 â? 1964 and was the part-time plant physician at DuPont from 1959 â? 1964. serving 22 years as Corporate Medical Director of Sonoco Products Co in Hartsville, SC, Dr Slone retired 1986. During his career he served on many boards, was a member of/or held offices in many organizations including the American, SC, and Pee Dee Medical Associations, Carolina Industrial Medical Association, SC Academy of General Practice, SC Lung Association, Darlington Cancer Society, Darlington Mental Association, SC Heart Association, and the American Geriatric Society. Allen was a member of St Luke United Methodist Church in Hartsville. He volunteered his time to teach School, serve on church boards and committees, assist the Boy Scouts, and was a member of the United Methodist Men. He was an active member of the Kairos Prison Ministry and the Hartsville Christmas in project. Having a thirst for knowledge he was an avid reader and had a passion for woodworking. He was a member of the Hartsville Woodworkers and often made furniture and items for his friends and family members. Of all his interests, his family was most important to him. Surviving in addition to his wife of 60 years, are his three children Susan Douthit Slone of Denver, NC; Mary Louise Slone Finklea of Florence, SC; and John Allen Slone and his wife, Linda, of Rock Hill, SC. He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Rebecca Douthit Slone Hogan. He is also survived by four grandchildren. Joseph Benjamin Finklea and Thomas Alan Finklea of Florence, SC; and Travis Allen Slone and Lainey Nicole Slone of Rock Hill, SC. Graveside services will be held 11:00 am , 1, 2008 in Sandy Springs, S.C. at the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church . Obituary: Victor Eugene Sloan, a lifelong resident of Greenville and Anderson , passed away unexpectedly at his home on 27, 2011. He was the son of Bobbie H. and the late Jack D. Sloan of Greenville. Surviving in addition to his mother, are his sister, Charlotte Reid of Greenville, and brother Craig Sloan of Belton, his daughters Brantlee Porter (Jeffrey) of Seneca, Amy Sloan of Easley, Sarah Sloan of Midgeville, TN, sons Brandon Sloan (Brandi) of Seneca and Eric Sloan of Easley. His pride and joy, granddaughters, Bree and Brylee Sloan and grandson Turner Sloan. In addition, several nieces nephews and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Jack D. Sloan, III. Full of life and spirited, Victor was a graduate of Wade Hampton High School, where he played his first love, football. attending Gardner-Webb , he proudly served in the Navy as a member of the USS Chandler during the Vietnam War. Before his retirement, he was an active member in the family-owned restaurants and co-owner of Sloans Trucking . A celebration of Victors life will be held on , 1, 2011 at 3:30pm in the Chapel of Woodlawn . The family will receive friends following the service until 7:00 pm. Victor was an avid and passionate contributor to many charities. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to two of his favorites, St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 and the Disabled Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
