Obituary: William “Bill” Stanley Stachnik ( 17, 1958 – 19, 2016 ) We lost our Bill, a wonderful man. Someone who thought of others needs before his and treated everyone with unconditional positive regard. The way he conducted his life was a testimony to his character. Bill Stachnik, 58, of Lake Oswego, Oregon passed away on 19 following a courageous battle with glioblastoma multiforme – and a surgery that caused a debilitating stroke. He often spoke about how grateful and thankful he was for a joyous childhood in his Chicago Polish neighborhood, for the influences of his 3 fun, completely different and interesting brothers, for his loving parents, and a loving and energetic large extended family. Bill was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Stanley and Lillian Stachnik (both deceased). He is brother to Mike (Sherry), Jim (Valerie), and Steve (Kathy deceased; Debi), and brother-in-law to Rae, and Susan (Mike) and son- in- law to Barbara (Norman, deceased), and dad to his beautiful cats, Beatrix Potter and Isabella. He cherished his family and made many lifelong friends – many who he met at Marist and Quigley high schools and Illinois State university. In 1983, Bill met his wife and love of his life, Char, at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he completed his Bachelors of Science in . He proposed on a hike in the San Juan Mountains of Telluride, Colorado. He promised and fulfilled a life of adventure, and they moved to Oregon and spent many joyous vacations traveling, hiking in National Monuments and Forests, and exploring the many wonders of Oregon and the Southwest. He was a beloved and wonderful husband to Char. Bill and Char are grateful to share a great love - two very different people who became better together. Bill loves and is so proud of his nieces and nephews: Agnes, Joe, Ann, Sean, Ryan, Katie, and Nick. He was proud to be a “Big Brother” to Adam for over 12 years and is proud of the solid and good people that they all have become. He wishes them all fulfillment, success, and happiness. Bill recognized that he wanted to be a nurse at 25 y.o. – a perfect choice for a natural caregiver and nurturer. He cared for both of his parents when they were ill and brought his father to Oregon to assure he had the healthcare and emotional support that he needed until he passed at 95. Due to his wonderful manner with people, he quickly became leader of each team he worked with (Northwestern, Michael Reese center for Day Surgery, Midwest center for day surgery). He was a beloved manager at both Providence Milwaukie and Providence Portland Surgery Departments. He truly loved and respected his teams and often said that he loved to hear them laugh and have fun while they were hard at work. He had great satisfaction getting to know about each of them and their families and hearing how they spend their time outside of work. It was not uncommon to hear Bill coach his teams on working together: “A team is like an orchestra – together they make a brilliant sound and but each section has their moment to shine” and on bad days: “a good batter adjusts to the pitches.” Bill had a unique outlook on life. He acted to make his parents proud of the person he was and conducted himself by the golden rule. He never wanted or needed material possessions, and only wanted time with those he loved. He always said that it is important that we all support, be loyal, and respect one another. He voraciously read about and gravitated toward role models who displayed noble leadership. His wish in the afterlife is to sit and talk with great men and role models such as President Lincoln, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, William Shakespeare, John F Kennedy, Stan Musial, and Stan Mikita. Bill understood the importance of literally smelling the roses, enjoying the sunrise, taking the scenic route, watching the night stars, and enjoying the small moments. He had a great sense of humor, and had encyclopedic knowledge of a wide base of topics, especially history and music, and self described “inane trivia”. He was a great sports fan, especially Chicago teams and his adopted Beavers, Ducks, and Mariners. He had enviable knowledge of sports statistics. The Chicago Blackhawks 6th Stanley Cup victory brought great joy while recovering from the hospital, and we felt the excitement and hope of the Cubs World Series quest. Bill had incredible curiosity, energy, optimism, and perseverance. He took a 3-block jog one day that inspired him to complete 3 marathons. He then taught himself to swim to compete in many triathlons. Even after his debilitating stroke and partial blindness, Bill retained his incredible kindness, peaceful spirit, and was a joy to be with. He did not complain and was not concerned for himself. He was concerned and worried about Char, his family, his friends, his work team, and Adam. his brain surgery, Bill spent time vigorously writing on a tablet of paper. He wrote of his wishes, the music and movies he wanted his friends to hear, and quoted Tolkien’s Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings: “we do not wish for such times… all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” Bill selflessly used the remaining time given to him to help ease our loss. Bill and his family thank the many who cared for him. It took a village and our village was rich with loving people. His sister-in-law, Rae, spent many months lovingly caring for him. We appreciate her walks with Bill, her creativity, her laughs, and her enthusiastic sports commentary! Her selfless care will never be forgotten. His brother Mike helped escort him continued... |
