Obituary: Simonis, Russell Wayne 72 1/19/1937 1/15/2010 Russell Wayne Simonis passed away at home sur-rounded by his family Jan. 15, 2010. He was born in Racine, Wis., Jan. 19, 1937, to Leonard and Florence Simonis. Russell graduated from Gresham High School in 1956 where he excelled in all sports, was voted most inspirational athlete and was a member of the Shriners First Team All State for the 1955 football season. Russell played for the University of Oregon freshman football team for the 1956 season. Russell served in the U.S. Navy ROTC submarine division. He married his high school sweetheart, Irene Hanson, in 1958. Russell worked at Western Electric for 34 years and retired in 1991. retiring, he coached and umpired softball and baseball. He loved hunting and fishing and all outdoor activities. Russ was very involved with Pioneering in the Pines, a non-profit camping organization. Russ was a friend to everyone and a dad to all kids. Russ is survived by his wife, Irene; children, Valerie Simonis, Daniel Simonis and Cheryl (Thor) Alvarado; grandchildren, Brittany and Courtney Simonis; Paige, Brooke and Tommy Sawyer; and Elizabeth Alvarado; and brothers, Tom and Lee Simonis. He was preceded in death by his brother, Randy; and grandson, Jonathan. A service will be held at noon , Jan. 20, 2010, in Lincoln Memorial Park . In lieu of flowers, Russell requested that donations be made to his favorite charity, Pioneering in the Pines, c/o Joyce Madderon, 4848 Ochoco Ct. S.E., Salem, OR 97317. Obituary: Gloria Nonna Simonis passed away on 14th 2014. She was born 27, 1928 in Waitsburg WA., to John and Helia Powers. 11, 1947 she married Gilbert Bud Simonis in Phoenix AZ. Gloria and Buds passion in life were horses and a 60 year career in the horse racing industry. In 1954, they made their permanent home in Bend, OR were she trained and tended to several winning thoroughbreds while Bud raced. In 1966, she stopped training and started working for the Oregon Racing Commission. In 1971, she was hired as the Salem Racing Secretary becoming the third woman in racing history to hold this position at a recognized track. In 1993, she and Bud moved to Prineville, OR where she started the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. wore lavender jackets and became known as the Lavender Ladies. In 2009, she was asked to be the Grand Marshal for the Crooked River Round-Up and she was extremely honored to hold this position. She worked many years with the rodeo board. She was also involved with horse racing in Prineville as well. Gloria is survived by her husband Bud, daughter and son-in-law Sharron and Steve Loney of Prineville, OR. Grandson James Mike Jones of Prineville Or. Granddaughter Kimberley Sumner and husband Chad of Malott, WA. Grandson Ian Loney of Kenmore, WA. Two great-grandsons Kash, and Kruz Sumner of Malott, WA and several extended family members and friends. Please come and celebrate Glorias life at the Prineville ; the viewing will be held 19th, 2014 from 1:00pm-7:00pm at Prineville . The funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on 20th, 2014 also at Prineville with the burial to follow at Juniper Haven . |
