Obituary: Margaret Evalee Heiner Scrivner was born 3, 1926, in Phillipsburg, Kansas; the daughter of Leonard Kenneth Heiner and his wife Ruby Pearl Shumard Heiner. Shortly after Margaret was born they realized she had an allergy to the milk her formula was made from. Back then they didn't have powdered formula in cans, sold at the local drug store. a period of time, someone suggested goat's milk. Because grandma was desperate by then she tried the goat milk and it worked. When Margaret was seven her brother, Kenneth, was born and a year after that Arleta then Ruth. Margaret was the oldest of four children but survived all three of her siblings. Early In 1941, her Uncle Harold left Kansas and moved to Washington, since there were no jobs in Kansas, he told his brother, Leonard, who was a welder, they were hiring at the shipyards on Whidbey Island. When Leonard knew there were jobs in Washington, he packed up his family and moved. Margret was 15.The United States had not yet entered World War 2, but was preparing, knowing it was only a matter of time. it wasn't until that Pearl Harbor was bombed and war was declared. Growing up Margaret was called Evalee by her friends and family, but when she went to Pacific Bible in Portland, Oregon in of 1945, her application did not include a "preferred to be called." As a result everyone started calling her Margaret. In of 46 Margaret met Mitchell Scrivner, they were married on May 25, 1946. Shortly after they were married, Mitchell convinced his older brother, Tilford, to leave Oklahoma, along with his wife, 7 children, his parents, and sister, Geneva. Mitch and Margaret lived in a small apartment, but for several weeks it was a full house. Aunt Geneva and lvy say there were wall to wall people sleeping on the floor. Margaret and Mitchell eventually became the parents of 6 children. Naomi May, Robert Ervan, Ruth Marie, Daniel Ray, David Dwayne, and finally Clifton Earl. For two or three years Mitchell and Margaret lived in Blanchard, Washington near her parents and attended the Bellingham Church of God. While on a trip to Portland they received word that both the house they lived in and the house next door, where her parents lived had burned to the ground. It was a , and Leonard and Pearl saw the fire trucks as they returned from church. The couple became involved in several Church of God congregations in the greater Portland area after that. in 1952, when some college friends led by Gene and Lorene Linamin pioneered a church at the Aloha Grange, Mitchell and Margaret were immediately involved. Every morning the grange had to be cleaned of all debris from the dance, held the night before. Naomi, as a child of 5, remembers helping to scatter the compound used to keep down the dust before the adults could sweep. Right away Margaret began teaching school, and later when the church began constructing the building up the road on Tualatin Valley Highway Mitchell helped with the foundation. In 1958 they briefly attended Richmond Community Church of God, after their car was stolen, but as soon as school was out they moved back to their acreage on Farmington Road and the Aloha church. in 1962, the couple moved to Portland again this time because Mitch's job had moved to Saint Johns. then attended the Irving Park church formally known as the German Church of God. When the people decided to sell to Maranatha Church, they became members of Holladay Park. In the late seventys they attended Chapman Community for a short time before moving to Rainier. In 1988, they sold their Rainier property and moved to Saint Helens, because their daughter Naomi lived there. again attended Chapman where Margaret played the organ. ln 1997, Naomi had moved to Texas, then Oklahoma, but in of 2000, they came back to Oregon to live with her parents. In 2002, Naomi and Gilbert bought a house (one larger than Mitch and Margaret's with an extra bathroom) at 104 Halsey Street. Mitchell passed away in 2010, Margaret began attending Morning Star Worship in Scappoose with her daughter Naomi. Margaret was a hard worker, working in the fields during summer months and when her children were old enough she taught them the value of hard work also. worked every day except , from the time school was out until school started in picking various different kinds of berries; then beans. When school started again, they would pick Italian prunes, filberts (now called hazelnuts by most people) and walnuts. These three jobs required crawling around on the ground. Because the days were still warm in bees were attracted by the sweetness of the plums, they had to be careful not to get stung. The ripeness of the fruit would cause some to split open. Anyone who has lived in Oregon for any length of time knows that by and when the nuts were ready to be harvested it was usually damp or just plain wet. You had to crawl around in the wet, awful, mess of the walnut husks. If you've never picked up walnuts you might not know, that when the nuts fall from the trees the husks that protect the shelled nut, often split and fall to the ground as well. This is what makes the mess. Margaret knew the importance of teaching her children not only spiritual matters but how to survive in the world. When the older children (Naomi, Robert, and Ruth) were too young to work in the fields during their summer months she taught vacation Bible School at the Aloha church. And when her older children started leaving home she took a job-driving a school bus and acting as the "field boss taking crews continued... |
