Obituary: Dorothy was born in Chicago on 3, 1925 to Gasper Volavchek and Helen Smirndich Volavchek. Dorothy joined brother Ivan Joseph "Johnny" Volavchek who was born in Chicago on 7, 1924. Gasper and Helen were immigrants from Yugoslavia.

The Volavchek family moved to Oregon in 1930. traveled on the train and Dorothy remembers the trip taking about a week. The family settled in a rundown house on SE 85th street off of Woodstock in the Lents area. Gasper was a laborer and machinist by trade but was good at whatever he did such as carpentry, masonry, gardening, etc. He took the rundown house and turned it into a comfortable home for the Volavchek family and later for the Volavchek children and their families. While they were extremely poor during the depression like so many others, they always had a garden and fruit trees along with chickens and rabbits.

Helen was a homemaker, did part-time house work, and was a wonderful cook. She spent many hours embroidering, crocheting and tatting beautiful doilies, tablecloths and linens. She tried to teach Dorothy to cook and embroider, etc., but Dorothy was not interested and wanted to be outside playing ball with the boys and riding the old bicycle that another family had given to her and her brother. Dorothy rode a bicycle everywhere and for miles. She rode the bike to Oaks Park on 7, 1941 and was there when Pearl Harbor was bombed.

Even though Dorothy was only 5 years old when her family moved to Oregon, she remembers the huge amounts of snow in Chicago in the winter that was piled up along the sides of the road and people having to dig tunnels through the snow to get to the street or from the street to the sidewalk. She also remembers that when there were sirens in the neighborhood all the children would run to where the sirens were to see what was going on. Many times it was a gambling raid and she remembers the gamblers throwing pennies in the street for the children to pick up. There were also stories of mobsters and people being thrown in the river with cement shoes.

Dorothy went to Lents Grade School and made many lifelong friends there. Many remained in SE Portland and stayed in touch for over 80 years. It was during her grade school years that she became known as "Pete". Everyone had nicknames and that is the name she chose for herself. Many of her friends and the children of her friends still call her Pete, including her dear friend Erna (Salty) who she met in grade school. Dorothy and Erna reconnected after Dorothy retired and for years Erna would pick Dorothy up on s and they would go shopping at "Freddies" and then have lunch. On many s it was off to the movies and lunch!

graduating high school Dorothy worked at Meier & Frank as a salesperson, in the shipyards and then doing secretarial work at Montgomery Ward. It was during this time in about 1950 when she met Elmer Sampert and they married on 12, 1950. In 1951 daughter Helen was born. Then along came Sandra "Sandy" in 1952 and Lynda in 1954. In 1956 Dorothy and Elmer had a son but sadly he died at birth.

In 1963 the Sampert family moved to their home in SE Portland off Duke street where Dorothy lived for 54 years. She lived on her own up until just before the time of her passing (with the help of her family in the last few years.) Dorothy and Elmer divorced in 1969. The Sampert girls married and grandchildren Tammy, Tiffany, Jennifer, Brian and Melissa joined the family and provided Dorothy with a lot of joy. Dorothy was thrilled when she became a Great-Grandmother and "Coo-Coo Grandma" to 5 great-grandchildren: Kelsey, Kolbi, Nicole, Hunter and Kali.

Dorothy was a hard worker and had various jobs such as making caramel apples in the fall for Pacific Fruit and working at Garbade's bakery downtown. In the 60's she went to work at the Spot 79, a restaurant and lounge on 79th and Foster where she worked for about 12 years. During these years she was given another nickname of "Quack-Quack" since she liked to drink a little Cold Duck from time-to-time. She made many more friends who she remained close with for the past 40 to 50 years. At the urging of a friend, she left the Spot and went to work at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in housekeeping and worked there until she retired.

Dorothy had a lot of difficult times and challenges in her life which some people would not have been able to overcome, but Dorothy was always upbeat with a smile on her face and always friendly. Her grandson once asked her "Grandma, why does everyone talk to you and you talk to everyone?" That was just the way she was. Dorothy never had a driver's license and as an adult walked and took a bus wherever she needed to go which gave her more opportunities to meet and talk to people and make friends!

There were never any ex-relatives and when two of her former son-in-laws heard of her passing they wrote the following: "Top 5 of the nicest persons I have ever met in my life. Always smiling and laughing. Did her best to brighten others. Thoughts and prayers to the entire family." and, "I loved Mom Sampert, she always made me feel like family. She always stayed in touch with my mom thru her last years. Will always think of her." Some friends of the Sampert girls considered Dorothy a second mother and their children thought of her as their grandma.

Dorothy was an animal lover and while she had dogs as pets over the years, continued...
