Obituary: Life Lessons from Auntie Virgie 27, 2015 Auntie Virgie was a very special person in our family. I learned a lot of life lessons from her, and so did the rest of her 15 nieces and nephews. As I prepared to share some thoughts about Auntie Virgie, I asked my sisters and cousins to share some of their memories and reflections as well. So, here are five things that we learned from Auntie Virgie. Lesson #1: It’s okay to be different. I don’t know exactly when I realized that Auntie Virgie wasn’t like all my other aunts and uncles, and I don’t think that I ever cared. I didn’t expect her to have a job, to be married, or to have kids. I simply expected her to be there, with Lolo and Lola. And she was, with a smile on her face. I don’t think she ever tried to be anyone else, and she certainly didn’t worry about little things. She was exactly who God wanted her to be, and that was enough. In fact, it was perfect. Lesson #2: You don’t have to talk to communicate. Because Auntie Virgie never mastered English, and because I barely know two sentences in Ilocano or Tagalog, communicating through words was very difficult. But even if I couldn’t hold a conversation with her, it was so nice to be in her presence. She would smile and raise her eyebrows when you said hello to her, as if she’d been waiting all day to see you. And she was a great companion. My cousin Jerlyn remembers that Auntie would put together her favorite Barney puzzle with her when she was little, and Jennifer and I remember that when we were young, Auntie would fan our hot ramen soup so that we wouldn’t burn our tongues. She did so many things to care for us – more than we’ll ever remember! Beyond what Auntie Virgie did for us, though, we also saw how our parents and grandparents showed love to Auntie. Sure, they all told her that they loved her, but they demonstrated their love by caring for her and going out of their way to do things for her that they knew she’d enjoy. There is not a doubt in my mind that Auntie Virgie was fiercely loved by our family, from her first day until her last. Lesson #3: If you want to be good at something, practice, practice, practice. Auntie Virgie was really good at certain things. When she was young, she had excellent penmanship. As she got older, she loved to do dishes and other household chores that had a repetitive nature to them. Joy remembers Auntie helping empty the dishwasher and making her chores easier. She also helped with the labor-intensive Filipino meals, and she was especially good at making perfectly round rice balls for ginataan. Her love for repetition personally benefitted me when I was a baby. I’ve been told that I sometimes was a challenge to put to bed. (Don’t worry – I’m getting payback now!) One day, my parents asked Auntie Virgie to babysit me and to put me down for a nap. asked her to pat my back because it helped me fall asleep. So, they left me in her care, and three hours later, they returned to find me sleeping soundly – with Auntie Virgie still patting my back! I love that she took such good care of me! And of course, all of us nieces and nephews will always connect the Filipino game, Sungka, to Auntie Virgie because she played it daily for hours. Joy, Jenn, and I each bought Sungka so we can think of her when we play at home. Auntie would sift the tiny shells through her fingers, dropping them into the buckets and then picking them up again. You could never beat Auntie Virgie at Sunka – and Joy tried just a few months ago! The point is, Auntie Virgie got lots of practice at certain things, and she was very good at them. If only we all had that type of dedication in our lives! Lesson #4: Be full of sweetness and joy. Auntie Virgie was literally full of sweetness: She loved Coke, fruit punch, Oreos, and my dad’s pancakes for breakfast, along with more savory treats like pizza, chips & guacamole, and Taco Bell Chalupas. She’d even spread the love to Roxy, Jennifer’s Chihuahua, by slipping her bites of pizza and dessert when she didn’t realize anyone was looking! Seriously, though, Auntie Virgie’s sweetness and joy could not be contained. She would whole-heartedly sing and clap to music, especially her favorite Gaither gospel music. Raymond said, “Although you could never fully understand her singing, you could feel the joy and happiness in her singing. Her joyous and light-hearted aroma was contagious.” And it’s true. She would bubble over with laughter throughout the day, and she didn’t care what anyone thought. She just let love and light emanate from her. And now, she is in the presence of the very One who instilled that love and joy within her. The final lesson we learned from Auntie Virgie is that we can’t make it on our own. As we all know, Auntie Virgie never lived a single day of her life alone. In fact, with just a few small exceptions, Lola (her mother) was with her almost every single day of her life. Plain and simple, Auntie Virgie couldn’t make it on her own. But you know what? None of us can! Just as Auntie needed family and caregivers to provide for her daily needs, we also need our heavenly Provider. It’s just a little easier for us to pretend that we can handle life on our own – but that’s OUR limitation, not hers. We are in desperate need for a Savior because we cannot live without His love. And Lola, I want you to know that your lifetime of love and dedication to Auntie Virgie is such a perfect picture of God’s unconditional love, faithfulness, and provision for us. ********** Auntie Virgie was taken continued... |
