Obituary: Lt. Col. James M. Van Strien (78) passed away on 28th in Raleigh. He leaves behind his wife of 19 years Saundra Hayes Van Strien and his children Joe Van Strien, Allison (Julia) Soman, John Van Strien and stepchildren Richard Shultz and Martha Miners and their families. A retired Special Forces Army veteran, Lt. Col. Van Strien served in Korea and three tours in Vietnam. Van Strein also retired from the state of NC Division of Emergency Management as an area coordinator and owned JVS Livery until his final retirement. retiring, Jim was an active volunteer. Van Strien was a volunteer ambassador at the RDU airport. His work there made him determined to establish a USO facility for our military men and women. Van Strien worked closely with the Airport Authority and the USO of North Carolina to make the USO at RDU a reality. President George W. Bush presented Van Strien the Presidents Volunteer Service Award in 2005 for this effort. Lt. Col. Van Strien served as past President of both the Military Officers Association and The Veterans Council of Wake . Van Strien was also honored by the MetLife Foundation, one of 32 senior volunteers nationwide to receive the honor of "Community Champion." The letter nominating Jim for the award read - "his level of commitment, flexibility, dedication, willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty, perseverance, and sense of compassion for his fellow men truly merits nomination, and high consideration for this prestigious award. That sentiment reflected the feelings of many people who worked and served with Jim during his lifetime. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and brothers-in-arms. The family requests in lieu of flowers - contributions to Hospice of Wake , or the MOAA Scholarship Fund (Military Officers Auxiliary Association) or in support of the USO at the Raleigh-Durham Regional Airport. His family will receive friends at Mitchell , 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27612, on , 2, from 3:00-5:00pm. Obituary: Joyce Ellen Striebel LEXINGTON - Joyce Ellen Striebel, 84 years old, of Lexington, SC passed away peacefully on , 5, 2015. She was born in Youngstown, Ohio on 12, 1931 to the late Albert and Ellen Royal. Joyce graduated from Boardman High School in Boardman, Ohio. She attended classes at Youngstown , and later attended classes at Purdue University at the North Central Campus. She was married to Kenneth Norman Striebel on 22, 1952 in Youngstown, Ohio. Joyce initially worked as an accountant and later as an antique dealer. Her interests focused around her family and were very active with square dancing in Indiana and local Columbia area clubs. She is survived by her children, Mark A. Striebel of Raleigh, NC, Carrie Fletcher of Macon, GA, Krista Hillis of Indian Land, SC; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild, and her brother Ron A. Royal of Sarasota, FL. She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth N. Striebel. Joyce was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend with a wonderful outlook on life.
