Obituary: HELEN “POLLY” STOKES HICKORY – Helen “Polly” York Stokes, 95, of Hickory passed away on May 13, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. Born on 23, 1919 in Catawba , she was the daughter of the late John Samuel and Sarah Hefner York. Polly was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She attended St. Peters Lutheran Church in Conover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Odell Stokes Sr.; daughter, Barbara Stokes Dellinger Robinson; son, Odell “Butch” Stokes Jr.; grandson, Terry Gene “Geno” Stokes Jr. Survivors include her children, Terry Gene Stokes Sr. and wife Donna of Mt. Holly, Peggy Stokes Eckard and husband Dalthard of Tupelo MS, Paula Stokes Walker of Hickory; grandchildren, Denise Stokes Hall, Jackie Barkley, Tracy Kuhnemann, Dax Eckard, Ashlee Biccum, Erin Burns, 17 great-grandchildren. Obituary: Gertie Lucille Sale Stokes, 98, formerly of Osborne Creek Road, Hamptonville, died , May 4, 2014, at Brian of Statesville. She was born 28, 1915, in Yadkin and was the daughter of the late Thomas Finley and Mary Lewis Sale. She was a devoted and faithful homemaker and worked on the family tobacco farm. She was a member of Old Fashion Gospel Church in Yadkin . In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 2001 by her husband, Clyde Henry Stokes; a daughter, Jeanette (Ray) Groce; a son, James Stokes; and ten brothers and sisters. She is survived by three daughters, Jaqueline (the late Troy) Henderson and Edna (the late Ralph) Henderson, both of Union Grove and Linda (Alton) Prevette of Windy Gap; a son, Robert (Jestine) Stokes of Hamptonville; a brother, Thomas Finley Pete (Pat) Sale, Jr. of Winston-Salem; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 4 step-great-grandchildren. service celebrating Gerties life will be held at 3:00 PM , May 7, 2014, in the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson with her nephew, Wayne Miller, Chaplain Sharon Snow and Edward Shoemaker officiating.
