Obituary: Mary Elizabeth Murray Stiffler 22, 1934 - 12, 2014 Mary Elizabeth Murray Stiffler, 80, of Charlotte, passed away morning at Presbyterian Hospital.Libby was born in Hickory, N.C. to the late Pearl and Rev. C.E. Murray. As a Methodist ministers family, the Murrays moved at least every four years and had lived in Cramerton, Concord, North Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Franklin, N.C. by the time Libby graduated from high school. She showed an early talent for music and was a skilled pianist. She earned a B.A. in music education from High Point , where she met her beloved husband, Lloyd E. Stiffler. She taught music in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System for nine years, and also led several church choirs, before the birth of her daughter, Rachel Elizabeth. Libby then turned her attention to teaching her daughter to sing, read and write, emphasizing the importance of correct spelling and grammar and enthusiastically supporting her in becoming a writer and journalist. In later years Libby helped her husband develop special Christmas and Easter programs for the choir of Covenant United Methodist Church, where he was Minister of Music. She is survived by her husband, of the home; daughter Rachel and son-in-law Richard M. Barron of Winston-Salem; brother Rev. Jerry Murray and wife Nancy of Rural Hall; sisters Katherine Hooks of Atlanta, and Rebecca Almond and husband R.L. of Greensboro; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service and burial will be held at 2 p.m. , Dec. 16 at Forest Lawn West and in Charlotte. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. |
