Obituary: Thomas St. Clair Sterling, beloved husband and father, went home to be with the Lord on , May 9, 2017. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and later in civil service at the comptroller office Naval Aviation Depot, Cherry Point. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, golfing and serving his church family at Village Chapel Presbyterian Church as an active member and deacon. He is survived by his wife, Carol Sue Sterling and son, Christopher Sterling. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. , May 13 at Village Chapel Presbyterian Church with visitation to follow. Obituary: Waynesville, Peter Van Orden Sterling passed away at home on , 30, 2016. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts to Clarence Irving and Edith Van Orden Sterling. Peter was a graduate of Davidson (NC) and Georgetown University (DC). While in Washington, he served for a time on the staff of US Senator Paul H. Douglas of Illinois, giving him a lifelong zest for politics. Peter always described himself as a history teacher when asked about is occupation, and that he was, at heart, throughout his career. Peter believed deeply that a knowledge of history sustains the vitality of a community; that caring adults can transform the lives of children and that in turn young people can transform the world; and that creative minds of all ages have limitless power when together they tackle important issues. He was, as a dear colleague described him, a launchpad of ideas – inspiring young people, talented colleagues and the community to envision and create learning spaces where exploration, engagement and innovation could flourish. Peter served as Chair, History Department at The New Hampton School (NH); Director of Education at Colonial Williamsburg (VA); Executive Director of The USS Constitution Museum (Old Ironsides) (MA); and President and CEO of The Childrens Museum of Indianapolis. Peter consulted around the world, seeking fresh perspectives on ways to bring us all together. He had a particular love of South America where his father and grandfather had worked. In his much loved adopted town of Waynesville, NC Peter continued his lifes work, serving on the Waynesville Historic Preservation Commission and developing the Haywood Snapshot Project, a community based program to preserve and share historical photographs. An avid sailor, Peter used a nautical phrase to describe his family and friends – they were his anchor to windward. He was so proud of his daughters, Melissa and Caroline, and his grandchildren. Peter followed his familys growth and achievements with love and admiration, from scoring soccer goals to speaking Chinese, from playing baseball to playing the piano and from organizing TED talks to leading school government and activist groups. Wherever he lived Peter always relished sitting around a dinner table, a dog at his feet, with dear friends, laughing and debating ideas. These friends buoyed him up during his long battle with Parkinsons Disease. And so together, family, friends and his beloved dog Farley, saw him home at last to a safe harbor. Peter was preceded in death by his parents and elder brother, Clarence Sterling. He is survived by his wife, Lorna; daughter, Melissa Sterling, son-in-law, Vincent Ridley; grandchildren, Elana, Caiden and Zane, of San Francisco; daughter, Caroline Sterling; and grandchildren, Sophia, Oliver and Amelia, of Pittsburgh; and his brother, David Sterling, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and so many dear friends to whom we are deeply grateful. Obituary: Richard Joseph Sterenczak, 68, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away on Dec. 18th, 2015 at his home. Rich was born and raised in Linden, NJ and also lived in Bridgewater, N.J., before moving to Richmond, VA, Tampa, FL, and settling down in Winston-Salem, N.C. Rich served in the military in the United States Army from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1972. He worked in the Information Technology field for the likes of Lockheed Martin, Xerox and Verizon. Post retirement he continued to work being the event coordinator at nursing facilities in the Winston-Salem area, where he enjoyed making people happy with his music. Richs biggest joy was music, having played the accordion, piano and other instruments throughout his life. In his high school years he formed a dance band with his brother, Joe and for many years performed at weddings and other social events. Rich especially loved spending time with family and his grandchildren Claire and Lauren. Rich never met a stranger. He had an uncanny ability to strike up a conversation with anyone at anyplace. He made a lasting impression that people would not forget and you could be certain hed always leave you with a smile on your face and joy in your heart. Son of the late Joseph and Helen Sterenczak, he is survived by former spouse Loretta Sitar, his sister Patricia Virgilio and her husband, Ronald, his brother Joseph P. Sterenczak and his wife, Mary-Lou. His children Richard Sterenczak Jr. and his wife, Chastity, Ryan Sterenczak, and Megan Sterenczak; five grandchildren Claire Sterenczak and Lauren Sterenczak, Maria Sterenczak, Jesse Buchenauer and Stephen Buchenauer and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends for a Visitation on , 29, 2015 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Frank Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel, 2849 Middlebrook Dr. The Mass will be held , 30, 2015 at 3 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Forsyth Humane Society or the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department in his memory would be appreciated. |
