Obituary: Drew Marian Spencer, 21, of Hickory, passed away on , 2, 2014. Born in Botosani, Romania on 7, 1992, he was the son of Dale Edward Spencer and Deborah Lynn Reaves Spencer. Drew was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover and was employed with Phatt Daddy Landscaping Co. He had a kind heart and free spirit. He would do anything for anyone. He would sacrifice everything he had to help his friends. The Drew Spencer of the shooting was not the real Drew Spencer. He was looking forward to going back to school this fall, getting more involved with family, and working toward a career. There are pieces to the puzzle that do not make sense, leaving a lot of unanswered questions. Please do not judge a book by its cover, unless you have read all of the chapters. Even with the abrupt, tragic end to his life, we have the comfort of knowing he is at peace and at home with his Heavenly Father. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Robert Spencer and his maternal grandfather, Henry Lee Reaves. Survivors include, Dale and Debbie Spencer of Bethlehem; sister, Diana Elizabeth Spencer of Smyrna, GA; paternal grandmother, Betty Yount Spencer of Conover; maternal grandmother, Marjorie Harris Reaves of Conover; foreign exchange student brother, Dominik Mehler of Hannover, Germany; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on , 20, 2014 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover with Rev A. Mark Schudde officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Obituary: Greensboro Dateline: Dorothy Groenendale Spencer died on 23, 2011, at Morningview Assisted Living. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, May 9, 1928, the daughter of Henry J. and Mae Groenendale. Dorothy grew up in New York City and (during World War II) Norfolk, VA. where her father was a Commander in the United States Navy. She graduated from New Jersey for Women (now Douglass ) with a B.S. in Library Science. She was a librarian at the Cleveland (Ohio) Public Library and the Yale University Library. An avid gardener, Dorothy moved to Greensboro in 1970 and became interested in growing and cooking with herbs. She taught courses in cooking with herbs at the Guilford Agriculture Extension Service. She joined the Herb Society of America, helped found (and was the first president of) the North Carolina Unit of the Society, served on the national organizations board for many years and wrote The Herb Society of America 1933-1993 A History, published by the HSA in 1995. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 58 years, Christopher (Kit); her son Andrew and his wife Donna of Cocoa, FL; her daughter, Abigail Blackman and her husband David of Winchester, MA; her son, Duncan of Marthas Vineyard, MA and granddaughters, Emma and Rachel Blackman. There will be a gathering of family and friends on 9, 2011, to celebrate the life of Dorothy Groenendale Spencer. This special time will be held at the OHenry Hotel in the Pavillion and Cloister Garden from 12:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., Dorothys son Andrew will share a brief time of reflection. Following these precious moments, the family invites those that are in attendance to share their special memories of Dorothy. A musical farewell will follow with the bagpipes in the Cloister Garden.
