Obituary: Candler- Walter Herbert Spence, age 95, of Candler, passed away on , 25, 2014 at the Charles George Veteran Administration Medical . A native of Haywood , and the son of the late Harry Edward Spence and Sallie Rice Spence; was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathleen Cooper Rhinehart Spence who passed away on 13, 2003; and a brother, Harry Edward Spence. He is survived by a daughter, Rhea Spence Hirsch of Virginia Beach, VA; two sons, Charles Harry Spence and his wife Kathy of Maggie Valley; and Walter Spence, Jr. and his wife Shirley of Candler; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and special friends, The Watson Family of Bethlehem, NC. Walter was an United States Army veteran who served in the European Theater. He was employed by Champion International and worked for the company for 38 and half years, and retired in 1975. Walter was a member of the Hickory Gospel Hall in Hickory, NC. Walter retired as a front manager with Kash and Karry Supermarkets of Tampa, FL. He was a member of the Champion YMCA Fast Pitch Champion Softball team from 1937 until the early 1960s. service will be held on , 28, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Wells of Canton with Reverend Steve Fox officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on and at other times the family will be at the home of his son, Walter Spence Jr., at 664 N. Morgan Branch Rd, Candler. Burial will be at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the United States Army, following the service. |
