Obituary: Mrs. Solomon, a native of Charlotte, passed away on May 30, 2014 at Brighton Gardens of Charlotte, following a period of declining health. Mrs. Solomon was born on 31, 1924 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Edward Francis Daugherty and Lillian Long Daugherty, and grew up with a large family of five siblings and multiple cousins and relatives. Mrs. Solomon moved to Charlotte at the age of four and attended ODonahue School (now St. Patricks School), graduating from Central High School in 1942; she continued to stay connected to her graduating class which gathered frequently for social events and reunions. Following her graduation from Central High, she attended Sienna Heights in Adrian, Michigan on scholarship. Subsequently, Mrs. Solomon worked for a period of time for DuPont in Charlotte. Lillian married Edward Thomas Solomon of Suffolk, Virginia, a career US Air Force fighter pilot, stationed in Charlotte (who claimed to have spotted her from the clouds) in 1944. She and Lt. Colonel Solomon thereafter were stationed on a number of Air Force bases, including in France and Germany, returning to Charlotte in 1967. Mrs. Solomon was an active member in the Air Force Officers Wives Club and a number of other social and religious organizations. A devout Catholic, she was a member of the St. Gabriel Catholic Church for forty-seven years, serving as a member of the St. Gabriel Womens Club and the Owls Club; she was also a regular volunteer receptionist. Mrs. Solomon was also a longtime and spirited member of the Republican Womens Club, serving in several leadership positions. She will be remembered for her quick wit and consummate style, including several stints as a fashion model. Mrs. Solomon was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Colonel Solomon, of 56 years; her daughter, Carol E. Solomon; two sisters, Gwendolyn Cleaver and Vivian Bruno; and one brother, Edward F. Daugherty, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Sharyn Moser and her husband David Moser of Charlotte; son Edward Thomas Solomon Jr., of Charlotte; daughter Diane Solomon Tolbert and her husband David Tolbert of New York City; granddaughter Laura Skelton and her husband Eric Skelton, and grandson Steven Poole, both of Charlotte; as well as three great grandchildren, Samantha DeWeese, Anderson and Caroline Skelton. Mrs. Solomon is also survived by her sisters Katherine Stallworth of Wilmington, NC, and Patricia Nelson of North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, both of whom she remained close to until the end of her life. Visitation will be on , 2nd from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on , 3rd at 2:00 pm, St. Gabriel Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Francis ORourke officiating, with burial following at Forrest Lawn East in Weddington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Gabriel Catholic Church and Hospice & Palliative , Charlotte Region. |

Obituary: Ms. Solomon, 93, passed away peacefully on 7, 2016. Born 9, 1922 in Petersburg, Virginia, she was a daughter of William Leslie Solomon and Mamie Stikeleather Solomon. Hazel attended the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and received her BSN from Duke University School of . She furthered her education at Yale University School of , where she studied operating room procedures and supervision. She was then employed for 39 years by Charlotte Memorial Hospital (Carolinas Medical ), where she served as the director of the operating rooms. Hazel and her parents were long time members and supporters of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church. She was also a generous supporter of many other causes. Hazel was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Nancy Belle Solomon. She is survived by her good friends Linda and Rannie Ford, Mary Faye Proctor and Silvia Kaiser. Hazel was most appreciative of the assistance provided to her by Mary Faye Proctor, Silvia Kaiser and Bonnie Thompson. A service to celebrate Hazels life will be held at 11:00 a.m. , 12th, at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Boulevard. Friends may visit at the church following the service. Hazel suggested that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the local chapter of the United Cerebral Palsy or to Alexander Childrens . If flowers are sent, Hazel requested that there be no gladiolas or carnations. |
