Obituary: Mary Eleanor Noonan Sappington, age 96, died peacefully in her home on , 12. Mary was a Captain in the Army Aircorps during WWII and served as a nurse and medical records specialist for many years, including over a decade at Wake Medical . She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Clarence Lester Sappington (d. 2000) and two sons, Clarence Lester Sappington, Jr. (d. 1987) and James William Sappington (d. 2007). She is survived by daughter, Annette Melvin; son, Thomas Sappington; grandson, Stephen; granddaughter, Tiffany; and great-grandsons; Austin, Braden and Connor. She is also survived by many loving family members, friends and her faith community at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Her family will receive friends on 14, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Brown-Wynne , 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh NC 27609. A funeral mass will be held 15, 2014 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2718 Overbrook Dr, Raleigh, NC 27608. Following the mass the family will receive friends in the Fallon at the church. Obituary: Timothy Tim Craig Sappenfield 1952- 2021 Belmont – Timothy Tim Craig Sappenfield, 69, passed away peacefully on 22, 2021, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was a native of Mecklenburg , born on 28, 1952, to the late Robert Warren Sappenfield and Audrey Gaddy Sappenfield. Tim worked in sales for over 40 years. He was a high school wrestling official for 45 years and formed many lasting friendships and relationships with fellow officials, coaches, and athletes. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014 where he joined his father as the first father and son duo. Tim retired as the Regional Supervisor for the West Central Wrestling Officials Association. During his career, he received numerous awards and was recognized as one of the top wrestling officials in North Carolina. Tim attended Appalachian State University on a wrestling scholarship. He was an avid Carolina Panthers fan. Tim and Debbie worked side by side on many rebuilding and decorating adventures. also enjoyed spending time at Sunset Beach. Tim was the most loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be greatly missed. Left to cherish his memories of 30+ years is his wife Debbie Sappenfield; their wonderful children, Shannon (Chris) Shepherd, (Jody) Mayberry, Charlie Carnes, Chris (Anna) Carnes, Amy (Jason) Ingold, and Ashley (Adam) Maier; his grandchildren, Storm (Ryan) Earnhardt, Jewell, and Hawke Shepherd, Dorothy, Sophie and Harris Carnes, Jacob and Ashton Smith, and Lauren Arthurs; and a great-grandchild, Sutton Earnhardt; and his extended family Heather and E.J. Obituary: Bob Sappenfield 1921-2015 Charlotte - Robert Warren Sappenfield, 94, passed away peacefully on 16, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born in High Point, NC on 13, 1921 to the late Fred Olive and Elizabeth Hayworth Sappenfield Bob was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed greatly! Many only knew him by the nick name of Rook he would often say, o one knows RW Sappenfield! He graduated in 1940 from High Point Central High School where he lettered in Golf 1938, 1939 and 1940; lettered in Football 1939 and 1940 and lettered in wrestling in 1938, 1939 and 1940. He was a (3) time state champion in NC in wrestling. high school he received a scholarship to Appalachian State Teachers where he wrestled and was coached by the Legendary Coach Red Watkins; the coach at Appalachian State at that time. Then came the War…, after being drafted in 1941, he was the first 20-year-old drafted into service in High Point. Finally, it came the day they had all been training for; they loaded up on a large cruiser ship set to go on 5, 1944. The sea was to rough so the invasion was called off. Finally, they tried again on 6, 1944, Dwight Eisenhower (5 star General) gives the word GO. The BIG RED ONE, 1st Infantry Division. His boat went in a 7 am in the morning of 6, 1944. He went in on the Beach at Omaha where the worst fighting was done on the Beaches of Normandy. Their mission was to set up aircraft protection from any German Fighter Planes that might appear, fortunately there were none. His outfit was the 29th Ranger Battalion. they had made it to the sand dunes; he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. furnished air protection as well as ground cover for any of the men and planes. He was a member of the 460th 101 First Infantry; they were there for about a month and then they moved on to The Battle of The Huertgen Forest. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Huertgen Forest. He went into the War as a Private and came out as a 2nd Lieutenant with a Battlefield Commission. He was discharged in 1945; right back where it all started four years earlier. He then started High Point in of 1945 and graduated in 1949. While at High Point he was captain of the golf team all four years. The highlight of his collegiate golfing career, was beating Arnold Palmer in one of his matches while Arnold was attending Wake Forest University. Then he went on to Emory University and received a Masters Degree in 1950; while coaching golf and wrestling. He then returned to High Point and rebuilt the wrestling program at High Point Central HS. As a coach, he lead the team to 3 North Carolina State Championship titles. From here he moved to Charlotte in the mid 1950s, he spent four years as the golf pro at The Charlotte Country Club. Bob later joined Dillard Paper as a salesman, where he served 43 years of dedicated service. Bob was inducted into High Point Central High Schools Sports Hall of Fame as a wrestler and golfer. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his lifelong service and dedication to the sport of wrestling in North Carolina. Just recently on Veterans Day 2015, Bob was presented by France The Legion Medal of Honor for Services in World War II by The French Consulate at a special ceremony in Charlotte. On 1, 1956 he married the love of his life, Audrey Gaddy Sappenfield and they had three wonderful children; Tim, Rob and Elizabeth Lisa. Left to cherish his memories includes his loving wife of 59 years, Audrey Gaddy Sappenfield; Children, Tim Sappenfield and wife Debbie of Belmont; Rob Sappenfield, Jr. and wife Kristie of Charlotte and Dr. Elizabeth Lisa Sappenfield Annan and husband Jason of Mt. Obituary: Nancy Payne Sappenfield, 79, of Pineville passed away at home on May 25, 2011 after a 7 year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born to Warwick and Nancy Donnelly Payne in Dallas, TX on 3, 1932. Raised in Charlotte, Nancy graduated from Central High School in 1950, attended Peace for 2 years and graduated from Queens with a degree in Bible and a minor in music. In 1954, she married her beloved husband, Dr. Luther C. Sappenfield. The couple spent most of their married life in Fayetteville, N.C. and were active members of Highland Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir for 43 years. She was also active in the Bell Choir, served as both Elder and Deacon and received an Honorary Life Membership from Presbyterian Women. She served as President of the Medical Auxiliary of Cumberland . Nancy was an active community volunteer in the school system, enjoyed gardening and was a loyal friend and caregiver as well as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. relocating to Pineville, she and her husband became members of First Presbyterian Church. Nancy was blessed with a loving family and is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Luther C. Sappenfield; sons and daughters-in-law, David and wife Marie, Daniel and wife Andrea and Michael and wife Leigh. Also is survived by her four grandchildren, Laura, Colin, Catie and Madeline. A Memorial Service will be held on , May 27 at 12:00 noon at 1st Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Trade St., Charlotte, NC.
