Obituary: Oscar M. Smith

Oscar M. Smith, of Rome, GA, died peacefully at home 9, 2010, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Smith was born 19, 1923 in Valdosta, Georgia where he attended public schools. He attended South Georgia , Georgia Tech, and graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1948.

Oscar was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Suzanne Watkins of Searcy, Arkansas.

He is survived by two sons, Marvin T. Smith of Valdosta, and Gordon A. Smith of New York and Atlanta, along with their wives, Julie and Jane. He is also survived by one sister, Helen Purdy of Valdosta, and her husband, Bill. In addition to his sons and sister, he is survived by five grandchildren, Fielding Smith Martin and her husband Will, Kimbrell Smith Teagarden and her husband Andrew, Gordon A. Smith, Jr., Andrew Patrick Smith, Amanda Elizabeth Smith, and one great granddaughter, Jane Kimbrell Teegarden.

Oscar was in the U. S. Army for three years during World War II and was discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant. He saw service in the European Theater of Operations as a member of the 163rd Engineer Combat Battalion in the 1st, 3rd, and 7th U. S. Armies.

Oscar was the first honor graduate of the University of Georgia Law School Class of 1948 and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was president of Sigma Chi social fraternity at the University of Georgia, a member of the Varsity Debating Team, Demosthenian Literary Society, Blue Key, Gridiron Secret Society, Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

He was a partner in the law firm of Smith, Shaw, Maddox, Davidson, and Graham. He practiced law in New York, Atlanta, and Rome for forty years during which he participated in more than 200 jury trials. He also served as counsel to several large business corporations, including service as General Counsel for Georgia Kraft for a number of years. A large part of his practice was devoted to hospital law and medical malpractice law. He served for 18 years as attorney for the Hospital Authority of Floyd . He was a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the American Bar Association, and was a Fellow of the American of Trial Lawyers. He was also a member and past-president of the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association. He served as a member of and Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the University of Georgia Law School Alumni Association, and as a member of and Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the University of Georgia Law School. He received the Law School Distinguished Service Award in 1973. Mr. Smith served as a member of the Georgia State Board of Bar Examiners for five years and as Chairman in 1979-1980. He also served as a Master of the Joseph Henry Lumpkin American Inn of Court and acted as instructor at various legal seminars.

An active member of the community, Mr. Smith served for 23 years as a Director of Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rome and has served that church as a member of its Official Board, as Chairman of the Finance Committee, and as a school teacher. He was active in the Rome Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber of Commerce, and served as Chairman of the Rome Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a member of the Coosa Country Club and served for four years as a Director of that organization. He has served as a Director and as President of the Floyd Foundation. He was a member of the Rotary Club and served as President from 1991-1992.

his retirement from law, Oscar became a national champion builder and flyer of rubber-powered scale model airplanes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the First United Methodist Church of Rome.

A memorial service will be held , Jan. 12, at 12 noon at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jane Brooks officiating. A private interment will be held prior to the service at Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Norwood Tupper Woody Smith, a retired advertising executive who was credited with creating the original Buffalo Sabres logo, died Oct. 25. He was 89.

Born in New York City, he grew up in Cambridge, Mass., where he played football and rowed on the crew team at the Brown & Nichols School.

Enlisting in the Navy upon graduation, he served as a signalman aboard the USS Adams in the Pacific during World War II.

the war, he studied at Dartmouth , where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and worked as a summer counselor at Camp Hanoum in Vermont, where he met Elizabeth Betsy Baker Chester from Buffalo, who became his wife in 1947.

Mr. Smith moved to Buffalo in 1950 and became a copywriter at Melvin Hall Advertising. He joined Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn as a copywriter in 1953 and became vice president and regional manager, running the Buffalo office. When the office closed in 1969, he joined Lloyd Mansfield Advertising as a vice president and served as its creative director. He retired in 1990.

He worked regularly with the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce to develop communications and campaigns promoting Buffalo. He was said to have created the original Sabres logo on the back of a cocktail napkin.

He also was an instructor and brainstorming leader at BBDO executive Alex Osborns creative education seminars at the University of Buffalo in the 1950s and 1960s.

He was a member of the Buffalo Yacht Club, the Dartmouth Club, the Buffalo Fire Bell Club, the Sitzmarker Ski Club, the Tarapon Cove Racquet Club and the Mid-Day Club.

He maintained a summer home in The Kennels on Holloway Bay, Ont. In retirement, he wintered in Naples, Fla., and Wiggins Bay, Fla.

He was an avid photographer and regularly swam, sailed and enjoyed the beach.

His wife died in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Mark T.; and a daughter Elizabeth S. Croston.

A Mass of Resurrection will be offered at noon Nov. 9 in St. Pauls Episcopal Cathedral, Church and Pearl streets.
