Obituary: Sadly, our dear father and friend, Adolph E. Sloboda, passed on , 17th, following a long bought with cancer. He was 87. Known as Adi, Art, or Arthur to friends and family, he was a true Rockland original; moving with his family from New York City in the late 1930's. As a child he loved the natural beauty of the ; hiked and camped throughout the woods and hills, swam in the lakes, and worked summers on farms in the area. In high school he began working part-time at what was then Lederle Laboratories. Here he met his lifelong mentor and friend, Gerald Egelston, who encouraged him to pursue higher education; finally culminating in his earning a PhD. in Biology from NYU. In 1985 he was honored with Cyanamid's Scientific Achievement Award, for his achievements in medical research; which included his development of the anti-inflammatory drug, Fenbufen (Cinopal) and some 13 patents he authored or co-authored. During his time at school, he met Christina (Chrissy) Panagos and married her several years later. resided 60 years, as man and wife, in their beloved Rockland , and in the 1960's moved into their "dream home"; where they still reside. Together, they built a wonderful life and home. had 4 children, many pets, and many friends. were physically very active and in the 70's joined the Nyack Field Club; which became the center of their lives. Their extensive social life included many friends at the Club, wonderful neighbors, Jack and Gloria Strauss, and the entire Sontag family; who adopted them as their own during some very hard personal times. Dad was very loyal and maintained his countless friendships lifelong. Even at the end, he would recount and reminisce about the wonderful friends and adventures he had had over the years. Sadly, in the last 8 years, health problems isolated our parents, more and more. Dad is survived by his wife, Christina, his children: Linda of Manhattan, Eric and his wife Lois of Highland Mills, Gerald and his wife Georgia of Highland Mills, Alisa Clark and her husband Craig of Milford MI., and 7 adoring grandchildren: Jordan, Tyler, Gerald, Ava, Emily, Arthur (AJ), and Zakary. We are all going to miss him dearly. Finally, Adolph's family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Northern Manor Multicare , in Nanuet, for their genuine love and wonderful care. Under Naomi's patient guidance, Dad's last months were made as comfortable as humanly possible. Regarding the funeral: 2 viewings will be held at Higgins (321 South Main Street, New City): from 7-9 pm and from 1-3 pm. 's viewing will be immediately followed by a short service. There will also be a repass after the service (location to be determined-call Higgins for more info). Dad will be cremated on . |
