Obituary: Bridgewater Abe Shliferstein, a computer graphics pioneer and a born lifter of spirits, died 19, 2016 at the age of 67. A native New Yorker born in 1949, Abe took pride in the culturally-Jewish heritage he shared with his devoted parents Moniek and Leona and his protective older sister Bella, refugees from the Holocaust. From childhood he showed both a fascination with computers and a talent for mastering them. As a young teenager, he snuck into an IBM lab to borrow time on their punchcard supercomputer; questioned by an IBM scientist, he dodged trouble by posing as a college whiz kid and fixing the errors in the scientists code. Abe entered college at 16, beginning an academic career that led to one of the earliest Ph.D.s in computer science and a professorship by age 23. His knack for computer science was such that he would agree to teach computer languages he didn yet know and would master them in time for the first day of class. The young professors eye was caught by neuropsychology grad student Carol Gebhardt, and they married in 1980, a loving 36-year marriage that produced Jim, 32, and Scott, 28. Abe is survived and deeply mourned by Carol and both sons. academia, Abe enjoyed an extraordinary career in computer science; his work probably led to one of the applications you used today. In the late 70s and early 80s he contributed both theory and code to the then-new field of computer graphics and computer-aided design; subsequently he was among the early developers of user interfaces (which allow you to use a computer without knowing how to program), of the Unix operating system, and of the systems underlying online shopping. Abe was tirelessly generous with his time and with his many areas of expertise. He freely gave his weekends to programming projects on behalf of the Special Olympics, to volunteering on the local school districts technology committee, to teaching computer science to the Cub Scouts, to helping friends and family not only with their computers but also with his wide range of other talents: the go-to man for solving daunting problems in math and in life. What he didn know, he wanted to know: he read avidly, especially news and politics, economics and game theory, histories and true crime, biographies of comedians and politicians, and science fiction – particularly anything involving time travel. A happy playfulness infused everything Abe did. Abe loved strategic games: contract bridge, poker, backgammon, Scrabble, Nethack, Catchphrase, Codenames, Ultimate Werewolf. He played softball and was competitive in racquetball. He played inventively with children, especially his own – there was no toddler from whom Abe couldn get a delighted giggle. When his sons were older, he gamely acted in their high school movie projects and often stole the scene. He danced in the passenger seat to amuse his family on road trips; he drove them through Europe, Disney World, Montreal, Las Vegas, Vermont, the Grand Canyon, and Hawaii so that they could share in his excitement about the neat parts of the world. Obituary: Branchburg Betty Jane (Kreckmann) Shivers 96, died 13, 2015 Betty was born 5, 1919 in Germantown, PA. She was the daughter of the late Margaretta & Frederick Howard Kreckmann. She completed high school & attended Pierce Business School, prior to marrying the love of her life, Franklin E. Shivers who predeceased her. were married for 67 years. She was formerly of Collingswood, NJ before moving to Branchburg over 51 years ago. Betty was the mother of three and highly active in her childrens youth & activities. She was a girl scout leader & den leader in cub scouts. Later in life she worked for the Township of Branchburg as a secretary. She was a member of the North Branch Reformed Church and the Branchburg Senior Citizens. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and baking. Betty was famous for her candy making. She enjoyed watching her grandchildrens activities and enjoyed sharing stories of their successes, achievements, and talents with love and pride. Surviving are her two sons, Franklin E. Jr. and his wife Michele, Richard L. and his wife Rena, a daughter Judith S. (Shivers) Raphel and her husband Michael, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Margaretta Wornick and is predeceased by her brother Frederick Bud Kreckmann. services will be 10:30 am , 23, 2015 at North Branch Reformed Church, 203 Rt. 28, Bridgewater.
