Sawtelle, 89, of Keene, passed away at his home , 19, 2016. He was born in Keene on 15, 1926, the son of Hazel (Blanchard) Sawtelle Deyo and George Sawtelle, and remained a lifelong resident of his home town. Frank enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, assigned to the Carrier Air Craft Service. His most memorable time in the military was spent as a machinist on a carrier near the Panama Canal. He enjoyed the mechanical work and eschewed shore leave in Balboa, Panama in favor of studying mechanical systems manuals in the carriers library. Frank was honorably discharged following the end of the war, and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal. Following his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Frank returned to Keene to partner with his father, George Sawtelle, in Better Builders, a carpentry business. Driving through present-day Keene with Frank offered a private tour of his work, as he would point out the homes that he had worked on or built during these years. Frank was a member of the Keene Rifle Club and a competitive shooter. He and his father hunted during the winters, but later Frank decided his talents were better served in the classroom, so he chose to teach gun safety classes. Frank was also an avid motorcyclist who always rode an Indian or Harley. In 1948, he married Ruth LaPlante of West Swanzey. Frank described his wife as an energetic free spirit and they complemented each other during their nearly 53 years together. Preferring to work with metal rather than wood, Frank left professional construction in 1951 to join Markem Machine , later Markem Corporation (currently Markem Imaje). In his early years with the company he worked in Product Development, and was awarded several patents for his machine designs. He moved into management and at various times was Manager of Product Development, of Value Engineering, of Parts Quality Control, and of Manufacturing Engineering. In 1983, Frank became Manager of Computer Resources, and oversaw the installation of a CAD/CAM system. The company hailed this accomplishment as instrumental to the survival of the company and a major advance in their information management systems. Several years after completing this project, Frank retired from Markem but continued on as a consultant for a short time. In 2003, he was inducted into the Markem Wall of Fame honoring his contributions to the company. Being a humble gentleman of quiet disposition, Franks fellow employees at Markem may not have been fully aware of these professional accomplishments, but many still mention his re-design of the company break-room at the employees own request. In his early retirement years, Frank pursued family genealogy, which provided him and his wife Ruth with travel destinations for research in New England libraries. enjoyed their excursions in a van which Frank had modified to become a mini-recreational vehicle equipped with all household facilities. Ruths death in 2002 brought an end to this adventurous period. Frank retained his passion for mechanical and carpentry projects throughout his entire life. He never met a problem he didn want to solve, and was a creative and clever do-it-yourselfer. He was healthy enough to live out his life in the house which he designed and built in the early 1970s. Even in his late 80s, he continued to maintain and improve his house and grounds. Most recently, he built a stairway up a steep outdoor area so that he could more safely navigate his property when I get old. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Barbara Poole of Bristol, RI; two sisters: Hazel Bushey of Westmoreland and Marye Desruisseau of Marlborough; one brother: George Spike Sawtelle of Keene; two step-brothers: Jack Beal and Richard Beal; and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his wife: Ruth Sawtelle; one sister: Norma Wasileski; one sister-in-law: Lorraine Sawtelle; and three brothers-in-law: Chester Wasileski, Roy Bushey, and Gene Desruisseau. A memorial celebration will be held on , 1, 2016, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Fletcher , 33 Marlboro Street, Keene, NH with a service to follow at the at 11:00 am. A private burial will take place at the family plot in Monadnock View on Park Avenue in Keene at a later date. Frank will be remembered as a quiet, studious, and accomplished man who was well respected both for his skills and his character. Because Frank was a member of the Masonic Jerusalem Lodge #104 in Keene for nearly 60 years, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Frank W. Sawtelles name to the Keene Masonic Jerusalem Lodge, 525 Washington Street, Keene, NH 03431, or to the charity of the donors choice. |
