Obituary: Jacob (Jake) Mathias Simonitsch, 98, Independence MO, passed away on 5, 2017. Jake was born 20, 1918, to Jacob Mathias and Margarite (McDermott) Simonitsch, in Jamestown ND. While in St. Mary's High School, Bismarck ND, he worked for his father in the parts department of the local office of Minneapolis-Moline, a farm machinery company. In the early spring of 1935, he would snow-sled with Satchel Paige, then a Bismarck baseball team player.
high school, he worked in Idaho as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) until about 1937. He lived for two months in Lewiston ID with his mothers cousin and wife, working at an automobile dealership. He hitchhiked back to Bismarck to visit his family, and then hitchhiked to Oaks ND to help his Uncle Will McDermott on his farm for a short time, with the intention of returning to the Lewiston dealership.
While at his uncles farm, Jakes father died. W.A. Dodge, manager of Minneapolis-Moline, offered Jake a job at the Fargo ND store for 25 cents less an hour than his father earned in Bismarck. Jake moved with his mother, younger brother, Charles, and two sisters, Margaret Elizabeth and Mary Eileen, to Moorhead MN, where his paternal grandparents, Mathias and Mary Simonitsch, lived. While working for Minneapolis-Moline, Jake also attended Moorhead State Teachers part-time.
Jake enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1942 and was sent to Texas for pilot training. While at pilot training camp, two of the 130 cadets in his barracks came down with the mumps. The military identified 11 cadets, including Jake, as already having had the mumps. The 11 were pulled out of the group and 4, including Jake, were selected a few days later for navigator training, because of their high math scores. The remaining 7 were sent to bombardier or pilot school. Jake was promised that after finishing navigation school he would qualify for pilot training.
He completed navigation training 8, 1942 in Hondo TX, was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. navigator and qualified for combat. He flew some navigation flights in Oklahoma and then was assigned to combat duty flying B-17s with the 390th Bomb Group. Flying out of Framlingham, England, he completed 18 missions. His plane was shot down on his 19th mission, the first Army Air Corps raid on Berlin. He was captured near Magdeburg, Germany on 4, 1944. He spent the remainder of the war at Stalag Luft I, outside of Barth, Germany. To fill the hours, Jake studied Spanish under Bernard Barker, a fellow POW, later infamous as one of the Watergate burglars. Russians liberated the prison camp on 30, 1945.

Jake was flown to Camp Lucky Strike, France. He was able to "hitchhike to his old Framlingham base for at least two nights, where he was told he was AWOL. He also visited Paris twice while assigned to Camp Lucky Strike. 2 or 3 weeks, he shipped out to Maryland. He hitchhiked on an Army Air Corps plane from Maryland to Minneapolis, where he visited his Aunt Edna and Uncle Joe MacDonald and cousins, Bob and Suzanne, for a week. A crowd, including his mother, sister Margaret Elizabeth, and his Aunt Laura McDermott, a WWI combat nurse, greeted his train in Fargo when he returned home. Jake recalled that Aunt Laura took off his hat saying, "He still has red hair!" five weeks, he was reassigned to Texas, where he was discharged, but remained in the Air Force Reserve.
Finding a plane headed to Minneapolis, Jake returned to Moorhead. Jake visited Minneapolis-Moline, but decided to enroll in the University of Minnesota. His cousin, Fr. Roland Simonitsch, a Notre Dame University professor, unsuccessfully urged Jake to attend Notre Dame. Jake joined a fraternity, and with fraternity brothers in tow, frequently shared meals with his Uncle Bob and Aunt Edna in Minneapolis. His aunt cringed as Jake and his friends threw dishes around while washing them, unaware that the group included Fortune Gordien, a future Olympic discus thrower and shot putter.
At a fraternity function, Jake met his future wife, Donna Kienlen, a St. Marys nursing student. On the first date, Jake embarrassed Donna by greeting one of the St. Marys nuns with a hug, lifting the nun off the ground. Donna, fearing a rebuke, learned the nun was Jakes friend from Fargo.
Before Jake could complete college, the US Air Force recalled him as a navigator for Korean combat duty. Jake and Donna married in St. George MN on 16, 1951, and moved to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (AFB) in Tucson AZ. bought a house in Tucson and James Marcus was born in 1952. Jake was reassigned shortly after to a base in Washington to navigate B-36's. In 1953, he left for Korea to navigate B-29s. Donna moved with Marc back to St. George to her parents farm. Their daughter Jean was born on 4 in New Ulm MN while Jake was still in Korea.
Jake returned stateside in 1953. The family was assigned to Castle AFB CA where Judith Mae was born the next year. The family traveled cross-country to Dow AFB, near Bangor ME, where John Matthew was born. Patricia Jane and Pamela Joan were also born at Dow AFB on Donnas birthday, May 15. Jake was navigating KC-97 tankers out of Dow AFB. He was assigned to Kindley AFB, Bermuda in 1959. At Kindley he was a member of the Strategic Air Command , 303rd Air Refueling Squadron, The Flying Tigers, motto every man a tiger, and was on alert during the Cuban Bay of Pigs invasion. While in Bermuda, he corresponded with Maria von Trapp, of The Sound of Music fame.
The family moved back to the US in 1963 to Whiteman AFB MO where Janet Mary, named by her older siblings, was born. To continued...

Obituary: A lovely and passionate man was taken far too soon from his family, friends, and this community at the age of 64.

Rick was the beloved husband of Claudia Moran for 41 years, and an extraordinary father to Jessica and Amelia. He was a loving son of Helen and the late Jacob Simoncelli, loving brother of Michael (Anne) Simoncelli and uncle of Zachary (Brittany) Simoncelli and Leah (Felipe) Leon, and loving son--in-law of Raymond and Eleanor Moran; and brother-in-law of Carol Moran. Rick was a dear father-in-law to Thomas Gershman and cherished grandfather to Joseph Simon Gershman.

Born in New Eagle, PA, Rick received his bachelors degree from Allegheny in Meadville, PA. He moved to St. Louis to pursue his Ph.D. in Musicology at Washington University, and became the first coordinator of the Music at Edison Series there. Rick then served eight years at the Missouri Arts Council - five of them as Executive Director - followed by 18 years as the Assistant Director for Public Affairs and Operations at the St. Louis Art Museum.

Rick retired after 12 years as the President of the St. Louis Public Library Foundation, during which time he developed and nurtured the organizations board of trustees, expanded the librarys connections to the general public and relationships with the philanthropic community, and implemented a capital campaign that raised $20 million of the $70 million cost to restore and modernize the Central Library in downtown St. Louis.

With diverse interests and an inquisitive soul, Rick was a spiritual wanderer and a collector of experiences. He was a pianist and musician who played a variety of instruments during his life including the cello, fiddle, and ukulele. He was also a lover of music (from Bach to Bette Midler), and dance (from modern to salsa). Rick was an accomplished cook and baker, and relished planning and preparing a meal for family and friends. A voracious reader, he enjoyed historical fiction and mysteries. He served on the University City film commission and instilled in his daughters a love of movies - especially those of Alfred Hitchcock. His recent pursuits were broad, ranging from pottery to standup paddle boarding, from mindfulness training to Italian. He lived a life of learning and growing.

Rick passed away peacefully after a brave, 19-month battle with brain cancer. He did not deserve this fight, though he handled it with grace. He is deeply missed and will remain present as we carry and cherish his memory.

In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Ricks memory to the National Brain Tumor Societys glioblastoma research fund (www.defeatgbm.org).

A memorial service will be conducted at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, 7401 Delmar Blvd., University City, MO 63130 on , May 14 at 10:30 a.m. There will be a reception immediately following in Mitchell Hall.
