Obituary: Zygmunt W. Strus, age 91, a resident of St. Clair Shores, passed away peacefully, with his wife Sharon by his side, in St. Clair Shores, on 23, 2017. The youngest of three sons, was born to Michalina and Wladyslaw on 20, 1926 in and Pustelnik, Poland. He aspired to be a pilot, but his education was interrupted by the German occupation of World War II. During the occupation, he became a foreign forced laborer, working on an orchard, a farm, and on a railway system. the war, he joined the Polish anti-Communist Resistance, whos goal was to oppose the Soviet annexation of Poland. He was granted amnesty in 1946, and then served two years in the Polish National Army. Zygmunt possessed technical skills and self-taught himself to be a mechanic. These attributes served him well during his many years as part of Orbis tourism transportation services, where he was a tour guide and bus driver. At the time, this was a coveted position, as it let him travel outside of Poland, something that was very difficult for his fellow countrymen to do. He thrived in this profession, and his outgoing personality and penchant for problem-solving was admired by his traveling guests. During this time, he started a family and welcomed his first son, Arek, in 1959. In 1978, he met Sharon, his future wife, who had been traveling with her mother, Frances, on a tour of Poland. The two had instant chemistry, and Zygmunt offered to personally take them on a trip through Hungary. Zygmunt visited Sharon later that year, in the Whirlwind courtship was sealed by marriage in a civil court in the winter of 1978. The following , Sharon and Zygmunt were married and the Patronage of St. Joseph where Sharon was the school principal, and at the age of 53 Zygmunt started a new life in America. In 1980, he became the father to another son, Mark and soon after, in 1981, became a grandfather to Arleta, Areks daughter. In the 80s and 90s he raised his new family, tirelessly putting in long hours for Shortway Lines at Ford Rouge plant, and coming home to kick the soccer ball around with his young son. In his retirement, Zygmunt enjoy playing chess, cultivating his gardens and plantings, and dismantling broken contraptions in order to repurpose the parts. Zygmunts spirit will live on in his wife, Sharon, his sons Arek and Mark, his daughter-in-law Liddy, and four grandchildren Arleta, Solana, Mateo, and Santigo. Obituary: Margie Elaine (Matthews) Struin of Battle Creek, MI Margie, age 91, died peacefully morning, 12, 2015 at the Stoneridge Adult Foster of Bellevue, MI. Margie was born on 10, 1923 to Joseph Stinchcomb and Pearl Kennedy and was raised by her mother and stepfather Eldon Matthews. Margie graduated from Hastings High School in 1941. She worked for the Barry Department and Hastings Manufacturing before she joined the United States Cadet Corp through Community Hospital receiving her registered nursing degree 3, 1947. She started her nursing career in 1947 at Community Hospital and retired as house supervisor on 30, 1987. Margie was affectionately known as the eighborhood nurse and was passionate about nursing and taking care of family and friends. Her dedication to nursing and nurturing was her life long passion. She was a very generous and caring person making sure that no one she knew ever went hungry and had what they needed. Along with her nursing, she was a historian and compiled many history books for Barry Veterans, Baseline United Methodist Church to which she was a member for 68 years, and numerous genealogy books for family members. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardening. Her and Dad were affectionately known as the sweet corn couple in the area. Margie married Kenneth William Struin at the United Methodist Church in Hastings, Michigan on 2, 1947 who preceded her in death on 28, 2014. were married for 68 years and together raised four children. Ruth (Glenn) Goheen of Battle Creek, Janet (Michael) Moon of Bellevue, Carol (Michael) Townsend of Towanda, IL and a son, William Kenneth Struin who preceded her in Jan. 6, 2012. She is survived by her three daughters; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a sister, Martha (James) Adams of Spring Lake, MI; a brother, Daniel (Julaine) Matthews of Jackson, MI and numerous nephews and nieces. The Memorial Service to celebrate Margies life will be held on , 16th at 11:30 a.m. at the Baseline United Methodist Church, 9617 Baseline Road, Battle Creek, MI 49017 with Pastor Peggy Baker, officiating. Margies family will greet friends on from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the Church and family and friends will continue Margies life celebration with a time of fellowship and a luncheon immediately following the Service in the Church Social Hall. Final interment will be next to her beloved husband, Ken in Hicks , Pennfield Township in the Spring. Memorial contributions in Margies honor may be directed to the Church or the Stoneridge Adult Foster , 4825 Fruin Road, Bellevue, MI 49021. Obituary: Kenneth William Struin, 92, passed away peacefully at Stoneridge Adult Foster on 28, 2014. Ken was born in the house he lived in, all his life, on 24, 1922 to William and Florence (Luce) Struin. He attended the Lincoln Rural School and graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1938. He played trumpet in the Central Band and in a dance band that played around the area for various functions especially at the White Rabbitt Dance Hall. Ken took a short course at Michigan State University and became a dairy farmer on the family farm. In 1976 he was involved in a farm accident that caused him to partially retire from farming. Ken raised beef cattle for a few years and drove school bus for Bellevue Community Schools for eight years then completely retired from farming. He was a member of the Bellevue School Board for 10 years, served on the Assyria Township Board of Review for 4 years and served a total of 16 years on the Assyria Township Board. Ken became a member of the Baseline United Methodist Church at the age of 12 years old and remained a member until his death. Because of his love of music, Ken enjoyed being a member of the church choir most of his life. Ken married Margie Elaine Matthews, on 2, 1947 in the First United Methodist Church in Hastings, MI and they were married for 68 years. Together they raised four children, Ruth (Glenn) Goheen, Janet (Mike) Moon, Carol (Mike) Townsend; and William Kenneth Struin who preceded him in death on 6, 2012. He had one sister Margaret Vandlen who preceded him in 2009. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Ken was noted for growing some of the tastiest sweet corn around for years and had customers that looked forward to his sweet corn signs each year. Through his avid gardening he donated fresh vegetables to the local food bank over the years. Ken played and enjoyed watching baseball and was a Detroit Tiger fan. He loved taking his kids and grandkids fishing at his pond and playing in the river that ran through his farm, and was noted for his great big strong bear hugs. Ken will be remembered by many as a generous, kind, and gentle man. He will be greatly missed. Friends will be received 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Baseline United Methodist Church. services will be officiated by Pastor Peggy Baker at the church 11:30 a.m. , 2, 2014, following the visitation. Inurnment at Hicks will follow a luncheon at church.
