Obituary: Basil Dean Sidener age 85 of Sturgis, Michigan, member of the Sturgis Wesleyan Church went to be with his Lord and Savior early evening 19, 2015 at his home. He was born 21, 1930 in Sturgis, Michigan son of the late Ray and Elizabeth (Pointer) Sidener. Deans early life was lived on a farm near Scott, Indiana. At the age of 13 the family moved to Sturgis and Dean graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1950 where he excelled in athletics earning seven varsity letters. He owned and operated Sturgis Exterminating in Sturgis for many years until his retirement in 1988. Prior to establishing his own business he had been employed by Marvel Industries and Ted Douglas Clothing both in Sturgis. In 1952 Dean was inducted in the U.S. Army serving in occupied Japan earning the rank of Private. While serving his country he was one of the very few to be chosen to play baseball as a member of the U.S. Army Baseball Team. Upon returning home from the service he played baseball for G&A Truckers at which time he was scouted by Mr. Baseball of South Bend, Indiana, Pop Scharian and in 1956 went on to play in Major League Baseballs Minor League AAA team the Watertown White Sox. He also played fast pitch softball for two years with the Tri State softball team. He is survived by two daughters; Tina (Larry) Barnell of Sturgis and Jody (Todd) Smeltzer of Saline; one son: Steven Sidener of White Pigeon; four grandchildren: Megan Barnell, Nathan (Becca) Barnell, Dustin Haack and Jordan Haack; one step granddaughter: Megan Smeltzer; three great grandchildren: Blake, Sydney and Abbegail; one sister: Mary (David) Bell of Sturgis; his companion and dear friend: Carol Smith of Sturgis and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Annabelle Sidener and Alice Rachel Wheeler and two brothers: Clark Sidener and Paul Sidener. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:15 P.M. at the Sturgis Wesleyan Church 907 N. Nottawa St. in Sturgis where funeral services celebrating the life of Basil Dean Sidener will take place at 3:30 P.M. . Pastor Robert Keim and Pastor Nathan Barnell will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Sidener in rural Shipshewana, Indiana. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Obituary: John Albert Sidelko, age 92 of Algonac, died , 26, 2015 at St. John Hospital in Detroit. He was born 23, 1923 in Pennsylvania, son of the late John and the late Julia (nee: Czura) Sidelko. As a Die Maker in the automotive industry, John spent many years offering the best of his hard-work ethics toward the fabrication of automobiles. When he wasn at work, those same ethics were a large part of his down time as John was noted for dabbling in all kinds of building projects. Whether for his interest in electronics, or his nautical prowess that went into the boats he built, this was truly a mans man who found both great enjoyment and reward in putting his hands and head together on the various pet projects that kept him busy. And not only building boats, but John also lived for the moments he could jump in his boats and sail leisurely up & down the St. Clair River. Of all his building highlights, perhaps the most notable (or at least merry-making) will forever be the infamous satellite dish that he and his brothers poured their hearts and souls into,…truly, a thing of beauty. Other sources of enjoyment for John included his love of music, and the rush he got from the car racing circuit. For a bit more of the serene and subdued, John loved to work in his garden and poured the utmost in tender-loving-care into nurturing its growth and splendor. And like many Michiganders, there were those precious moments spent down at the Ol Fishin Hole that brought reality to life,…and afforded John the simple pleasure of getting back to nature and taking advantage of what the Great Lakes State had to offer this angling pro. Yet of all his special pleasures, hangin out at the cottages just couldn be beat. In his earlier years, John maintained a cottage on the St. Clair River,…not a far drive from home, but just what the doctor ordered when the need to escape arose. Later in life, John decided to seek out a more far & away cottage, and settled on a picturesque location on Michigans Hubbard Lake. Nestled in the up north environment, it was the perfect answer to leaving the concrete jungle behind for a taste of Gods Country. Never having been married, John was free to pour the best of himself into his loving, extended family,…and they, in turn, provided this cherished uncle joy beyond description. He leaves behind a storehouse of memories for all to share & treasure who were blessed to know him, and will forever be remembered by his motto; Always remember to laugh. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally. John was the beloved son of the late John & Julia. He was predeceased by siblings, Stella (Thomas) Anderich, Edward Sidelko, Stanley Sidelko, and Jenny (Bob) Lawrence. Dear uncle of Sandra (Bill) Kirby, and the late Robert (Eva) Anderich.
