Obituary: Commander John Arthur Sutherland ll of Charleston, AR, who was born 5, 1921, in Waukegan, ILL, to Henry Rogers Sutherland & Mary Josephine Gilligan Sutherland, passed away on Oct. 11, 2015 at Mercy Medical in Fort Smith, AR at the age of 94. John attended Cornell University. that he attended & graduated from the US Naval Academy @ Annapolis, MD. John wanted it mentioned in his obit that he was allowed 150 demerits and he graduated with 300. He served honorably in the US Navy in World War ll. On board the USS Hobby his unit made the initial launching in Hiroshima with UDTS. John retired from the US Navy and joined Boeing Co. in Seattle, WA. He worked with boeing as Industrial Relations manager before he retired. He was involved at Boeing with the X-20 DynaSoar program in 1962 in Seattle and the Apollo program at the Kennedy Space in FL. A memorial service will be held at a later date at US National in Fort Smith under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston, AR. He is survived by three sons Ronald Henry Sutherland, John Michael Sutherland & wife Kimberly Sutherland and Richard Scott Sutherland all of Florida, Three granddaughters, Lindsay Juliana Sutherland Reynolds, Ashley Jeneane Sutherland Dortch & Sydney Sutherland of Florida; four great grandchildren Cruise Reynolds, Giuliani Reynolds, Christian Dortch & Aselyn Dortch of Florida. John will be sorely missed by his nephews & nieces, Ron & Susie Hood, Kim Carter, Cindy Jones, Angie Young, Andrew, Paul Tobias, Hans & Lee Wilhelm, Judy Hart & Children, Chris & Jennifer Hart, Joan Manning & children, Danny, Kathleen, David, Sarah, Judith & nephew Paris Wilhelm. John was preceded in death by his parents, The Love of His Life Jean Coates Sutherland, a daughter Shauny Kronfield and a brother Richard. Johns final years were spent at Greenhurst in Charleston, AR where he was treated with the utmost dignity & respect. He loved his ladies & also the guys who tended his needs always with love & kindness. Also the ladies he shared his meals with in the Mess Hall. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all of the staff at Greenhurst that made Johns last days as good as they could be. He loved you all, as do we. Obituary: Geraldine Sutherlan, 90, of Springdale, AR passed away , 11, 2016 at the Shiloh and Rehab. Geraldine was born on 27, 1925 in Hindsville, AR, a daughter of Lloyd Bohannon and Leona Pearl Sutton Bohannon. She married Verlin Sutherlan on 26, 1941 who preceded her in death in 2004. Geraldine was a homemaker, who helped raised chickens and also had sold Avon. She was a dedicated member of the Gospel Tabernacle in Springdale, enjoyed reading, crocheting, camping and fishing. She is survived by two sons, Richard Sutherlan and wife Rebecca of Siloam Springs and Tommy Sutherlan and wife Rita of Springdale; two sisters, Betty Wheeler of Lowell and Zeldene Harbour of Springdale; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Evelyn Virginia Manning; one brother, Floyd Bohannon; and three sisters, Dorothy Silmon, Oma Lee Bates, and Eula May James. Visitation will be held at the Backstrom-Pyeatte on , 14, 2016 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. services will be held at the Backstrom-Pyeatte Chapel on , 15, 2016 at 2:00pm.
