Obituary: Barry Schell passed away peacefully at Falmouth Hospital in Falmouth Massachusetts on 5, 2015. He was the son of the late Franklin and Margaret Schell, the grandson of the late Rhineholt Brinker Krause and grandmother Elizabeth Krause all of Philadelphia. He attended Drexell Institute of Technology where he received a Degree in Engineering. In 1960 he joined the United States Air Force as a Cadet and entered Harlingen Navigation and Pilot School4 graduating as a Navigator at the top of his class. His first assignment was to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware where he joined the First ATS Squadron and navigated the C-133 Cargo Master Air Craft, circum-navigating the earth many times, often going into hostile countries to deliver equipment, food and medical supplies and back up for the troops, as well as the Congo and multiple flights to Vietnam. In 1963 the Air Force sent him to the University of Nebraska where he obtained a degree in teaching. From Nebraska he was sent back to Dover where he continued flying the C-133s around the world. Also in 1963 he met his wife of fifty years Nanette and they were married at the Dover Air Force Base Chapel on 7, 1964. the wedding ceremony, the guests went to the Officers Club where the reception was held. Almost three hundred guests as well as friends from the squadron and from Germany attended. While the reception was going on, the newlyweds left the reception and took their car full of gifts back to their new home in Dover. Lt. Douglas Schell, brother of Lt. Barry Schell suggested he and his brother go back to pick up the remainder of the gifts. Nanette turned on the radio and the announcer said there was an urgent message from the Pentagon. The official said there had been a crash of a C-133 at Goose Bay, Labradore and that the plane crashed on take-off fully loaded with tanks and fuel. It was from Dover. General Howel Estes, Commandant of MATS and his wife as well as Fr. William Campbell were enjoying the wedding festivities. The Navigator Lt. Douglas Brookfied from Sharon, Massachusetts had changed places as a wedding gift so that his friend could get married. All seven crew members perished. When the two Schell brothers returned, they could not understand why Nanette was crying. listened to the radio again and knew who was on board. told the new bride they must all go back to the reception. Still in her wedding gown the three then announced to the guests, who were still enjoying the reception, that the plane had crashed killing the seven crew members. General Estes had not been informed by the Air Force as they did not know where he was at the time. Wives, loved ones, as well as next of kin were there, and after fifty one years later, the screams and crying out can never be forgotten. Major Heartys wife collapsed on the floor as did others. Captain and Mrs. Schell lived on Dover AFB and in 1965 their daughter Laura Jane was born. Their friend Fr. William Campbell went to the hospital to see the new baby. Moving on the Keesler AFB in Mississippi, Capt. Schell attended the Air Force Electronics Training School graduating at the top of his class. Another move to Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, Montana was where he worked with his Canadian counterpart for NORAD. Their son Mark was born during the assignment. From Malmstrom to Naha Air Base Okinawa, they lived there for almost three years. Both Captain Schell and Nanette traveled to England, Scotland, Wales, Eastern Germany, Bahamas, Canada, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand where they personally met HRH. King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Spending six weeks in Bangkok they returned to Okinawa and continued their military life, making trips to China. Capt. Schell was on the promotion list for Major but he decided to decline the offer and resigned his commission. Moving to Travis AFB in California was where he received a message from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Walter Reed Army Medical in Washington, DC. offered him a permanent position working with their electron microscopes. forty eight years of military service and government service, he retired because of ill health. He had many hobbies including photography, travel and sailing to the Bahamas for twenty years with his wife. He enjoyed making electronic gadgets in his spare time. He was a member of the Electron Microscope Society of North America, Ham radio, and he loved growing flowers in his garden. Fr. William Campbell visited and stayed with the family in Maryland. In 2007 he suggested moving to the Cape where the sea air might help. Many boxes arrived with information about homes for sale in North Falmouth and he went out of his way to go and look at homes to see if they were suitable. In 2008 they received a call from Fr. Bill telling the family he saw a lovely home near his house and they should come to see it. The family home in Maryland was sold and the move was completed. Many happy times were spent at our home sharing breakfasts, lunches and dinners with Fr. Campbell who had been a friend for fifty three years. Fr. William W. Campbell died two days before Barry Schell. Both friends received full military honors at the Massachusetts Military in Bourne two days apart. In addition to his wife of fifty years, Nannette (Thomson) Schell, he leaves his daughter Laura Jane Schell (Denis) of Clinton, Maryland, his son Mark (Claire) of Silver Spring, Maryland; his beloved granddaughter Christine, grandson Joseph; great grandson Daniel; sister Barbara (John) and their family of Sarasota, Florida; brother Douglas of North Carolina; brother in law Peter Thomson (Wendy) of Perthshire, Scotland; nieces Sarah of Scotland, Lucy continued... |
