Obituary: Philip I. Salib, M.D.: orthopedic surgeon , renaissance humanitarian Philip Ibrahim Salib, orthopedic surgeon in Boston, passed away on 2 of heart and kidney failure at Bostons Massachusetts General Hospital at the age of 91. Dr. Salib was a native of Egypt, born on 3, 1917 in Belbeis, a village close to Cairo, in a family of jewelry makers. He was the oldest brother of five siblings. He received from the University of Cairo his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1941, in 1944 the Postgraduate Diploma of General Surgery, in 1948 the Postgraduate Diploma of Orthopedic Surgery. From 1944 to 1949, Dr. Salib was Orthopedic Resident and Chief Resident at the Red Crescent Hospital for Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Acting Chief Orthopedic Surgeon, Rank Major, in various Egyptian Military Hospitals, and Orthopedic Surgeon at the Dar El-Shifa Hospital from 1951 to 1960. completing his medical degrees, he established two clinics for 22 years: One in his native village where he felt a humanitarian mission of providing medical care to those who could not afford it, and the other in the sprawling metropolis of Cairo. Of his proudest medical moments in Egypt, he had the opportunity to be one of the first surgeons ever to perform a medical archeological study of a several thousand year old Egyptian mummy. Pursuant to having visited many hospitals throughout Europe, in particular the main orthopedic centers of Vienna, Bologna, and London, he travelled to Spain, where he met his wife, Maria, who would be his best companion for the next 54 years. In 1953, they were married in Egypt, and two years later, was born his first son, Jean-Philippe, of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Due to the political and cultural instability of the country, in 1960 he uprooted his medical practice and family to the United States. He chose Boston because it had already been a pioneering medical center. A year after arriving, his second son, Carlos, of Boston, was born. When he arrived he had to diligently restart his medical orthopedic studies because of the incompatible accreditation of his previous medical degrees and experience from Egypt. He went to Harvard Medical School, and thus embarked on the second phase of his life. his reaccreditation of being an orthopedic surgeon, in short order he established, two clinics once again, one being at One Emerson Place across the street from the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the other in Lynnfield, at Union Hospital. He also started a long teaching academic career as he had in Egypt, at the Harvard Medical School, Boston University, and Tufts University. He was an orthopedic surgeon a total of 47 years in association with the Massachusetts General Hospital. He was also with the New England Baptist Hospital, Boston City Hospital and Union Hospital. He was a prolific writer always extending his knowledge and experience through numerous articles such as in the American Journal of Orthopedics, Orthopedic Consultation, CIBA Magazine and proceedings of S.I.C.O.T. ( International Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, where he was a member since 1948). He also wrote a book called Plaster Casting in 1975 which became a text book for medical students where he outlined procedures for the art of plaster casting within the orthopedic field. He built and designed with fellow surgeon, Dr. Aufranc, an exhibit showing the medical breakthrough of total hip replacement, that was at the Museum of Science from 1975-1993, and presently located at the New England Baptist Hospital. His membership in medical associations included the Massachusetts Medical Society, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the Royal Society of Medicine. Dr. Salib was also an accomplished artist, using the mediums of photography, watercolor, calligraphy and sketches where he exhibited his work throughout Europe, Egypt and the States. Also a musician, he played several instruments of which were the piano and oud. He was fluent in Arabic, French, English, Spanish and Italian. Within all Dr. Salibs mentioned accomplishments and timeline, his life was one of exemplary dedication and relentless conviction to the in betterment and health of mankind. He symbolized the epitome of dignity, gallantry, noble principles, and elegance. On 2nd, humanity lost one of its most dedicated followers. Services will be held on , 7, at St. Marys Church, 5 Linden Place in Brookline, MA, at 10:00am, followed by interment in Newton , 791 Walnut Street, Newton, MA. |
