Obituary: Anthony Strank, 94, of Laurel, Maryland died 1, 2014. Known to his friends as Tony. Son of the late Joseph and Mary (Kovalchik) Strank, he was born on 21, 1919 in Franklin Borough. Tonys parents immigrated from Jarabina, Czechoslovakia and he was the youngest of 11 children who grew up in Franklin Borough. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, John, Mike, and sisters Katie Holub, Mary Mitroka, Teresa Dietz, Anita Provenzano, Martha Jordan, Eva Tobias, and Bee Zivkovich. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Roslyn (Sevenack) Strank, daughter Christina Layman and husband Carl of Mt Airy MD, his son Jeffrey Strank and wife Michele of Glenwood MD. He has 7 grandchildren Justin, Kevin, Tyler, Carson, Randall, Anthony, Marissa, and 4 great-grandchildren Allison, Jaden, Allison, and Kyle. Tony was an Army Veteran of WWII and the Korean War. During WWII he landed at Normandy (Utah Beach) and fought across Europe into Germany until the end of the war. As a canoneer in the 981st Field Artillery BN his battery fired on Cherboug Harbor from point blank range at the forts that were still holding out, piercing the thick concrete walls and causing the Germans to surrender in 15 minutes. This provided a critical deep water port to supply the Allied Forces in Europe. The BN then turned its attention to the south and actively supported the VII Corps as they broke through the German lines in the St. Lo sector. Later his Artillery Unit was surrounded and nearly overrun by enemy troops in the Ardennes. Under horrific battle conditions his group maintained continuous fire which enabled the Unit to hold crucial ground during the Battle of the Bulge. He was an active participant in VBOB reunions for Veterans who fought in that great battle. Tony had unequaled appreciation for the sacrifice and accomplishments of our Veterans. Tonys cousin U.S. Marine Sgt. Michael Strank raised the Flag on Iwo Jima in the Pacific. Like many of his cousins, nephews, and friends from the Johnstown PA area, and veterans everywhere they did their duty during the war to provide Freedom to those oppressed. the war, Tony used the G.I. Bill to earn a degree in English and Social Studies at the University of Pittsburg graduating in 1949. He later earned a Masters Degree in 1955 also at the University of Pittsburg. Tony taught high school and college English before working as a technical writer for the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md for 27 years. He loved family, friends, trout fishing, golfing, reading, world history, and politics. Tony became a superb golfer in his 70s, shooting his age 72 and continuing that feat into his 80s. Truly one of Americas Greatest Generation. He was active in body, mind, and soul to the end. Viewing will be held from 2-4 pm and 7-9pm on at the Donaldson , Laurel, MD where Parastas will be sung at 7:30 pm. Mass will be held at 10 am on at St. Gregorys Byzantine Catholic Church in Beltsville Maryland, Fr, Michael Kerestes. The family suggests contributions be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project, https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org, in memory of Anthony Strank. On line condolences may be posted to http://www.donaldsonfuneralhome.com. |

Obituary: Michael Thomas “Mike” Strandquist Michael Thomas Strandquist, a 49-year resident of Annapolis, lost his heroic battle with pancreatic cancer on All Souls Day, 2, 2016. He was 59. “Mike,” as his many friends and family called him, died at home with his wife of 22 years, Karen Nelson Strandquist, by his side. Born to Mary Gabrielle and John Herbert Strandquist at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N. C., 19, 1957, Michael, was the third child in a close-knit family of eight children. arrived in Annapolis in 1967. Mike and his siblings attended Annapolis public elementary and junior high schools, but transferred to St. Mary’s for high school. Mike loved football and started playing when he was very young -- too small to be assigned a uniform. At St. Mary’s he excelled in football and lacrosse, and was in his element when named captain of the football and lacrosse teams in his senior year. As a 14-year-old, Mike earned a job at the Annapolis Sailing School. Too young to be an instructor, Mike worked the dock as a tiger, launching and receiving the boats. He learned to sail with his father, and worked his way to become an instructor. Soon he was teaching beginners how to sail. Experience gained at a young age was a true character-builder, and helped earn Mike a reputation as an indefatigable worker and leader – a reputation he maintained all his life. His expertise and dedication were evident as he rescued a boat and sailed it back during the infamous hurricane Agnes in 1972. graduating from St. Mary’s, Mike briefly attended college, yet was eager to enter the mainstream of life as an adult. Mike worked a series of construction jobs, laying pipes in snow and other miserable winter weather. He proved his grit and perseverance again and again. He went to work at Breezy Point Marina in Chesapeake Beach, MD where his amazing work ethic and ability to manage a large marina, eventually led to his becoming the manager, and ultimately owner, of the marina. Mike epitomized the idea of the self-made man. Enduring tremendous challenges and hardships connected with running his marina, Mike was virtually a one-man operation. Marina clients and employees alike recognize Michael as an honest owner, one sincerely interested in their welfare. Michael’s family was always paramount in his endeavors. A devoted husband and father, he believed family came first. Mike is survived by his wife, Karen, and his daughters, Dana (and her two daughters, Lucy and Daphne), Kirah, Maggie, Lily and his son, Thomas. Mike was the beloved brother of his large family of four brothers (Jack, Mark, Blaise, Peter) and three sisters (Julie, Bridget and Skye) and a loving and supportive son to his mother, Gabrielle. Michael’s father, John Strandquist, predeceased him on Fathers Day, 2016. Mike was a valued member of the Annapolis community, and was proud to call it his home. All who met Mike knew the kindness he had in his heart. He was truly dedicated to his family and every aspect of his children’s daily lives. Mike’s entire family is grief-stricken over the loss of their family hero. He was an amazing man who will be missed by everyone whose life he has touched. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church, 701 Pkwy, Annapolis MD, on , 8, at 11am. Friends may also call at Taylor , 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Annapolis on , 7, from 5 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at www.pancan.org. |

Obituary: Lt. Col. JOHN HERBERT STRANDQUIST USMC (Ret) On Fathers Day, 19, 2016 at Anne Arundel Medical in Annapolis, MD. A former resident of Washington’s Capital Hill, (1986 to 1997), he took his last breath with his wife and some of his eight children by his side. Cause of death was acute respiratory failure and pulmonary fibrosis. He was 10 days short of his 87th birthday. Born to John Herbert Strandquist and Mary Van Calligan Strandquist in Menominee, MI, the family resided in Marinette, WI. Orphaned before his fourth birthday, John was raised by his maternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Van Calligan in Marinette. While his grandmother instilled in him the sense of integrity and accountability he exhibited all his life, he understood at an early age he would have to seek his own destiny. Exhausting a small inheritance from his father after one year at Aquinas , Grand Rapids, MI, John enlisted in the USMC, went through Boot Camp at Parris Island, SC., and was promoted to PFC upon completion. Rising quickly in enlisted rank, he was recommended for Officer Candidates School, Quantico, VA, where he was commissioned a 2nd Lt and assigned to The Basic School. John’s Marine Corps career spanned 25 years, with overseas deployments to war zones in Korea and in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Legion of Merit with Combat “V”. In , 1973, John retired from the Marine Corps to take a position at The George Washington University where he had graduated in 1968. Initially hired as the Director of Manpower, he was given ever-expanding assignments earning him the title, Assistant Vice President for Administration. four years at the university, John was offered a position with a small association, located in Berea, OH: The American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA), today known as The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). John saw it as an irresistible challenge to bring a small organization with only 15 employees into the “big leagues.” When the Board decided to move to Alexandria, VA, he organized the purchase of property in Alexandria and all attendant matters of the move from Berea to Alexandria. He served as Operations Officer for the association until, after 13 years, he joined the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) as the president and CEO. Under John’s leadership, AAMVA enjoyed 9 years in growth and increasing influence. He left the association in excellent shape when he retired from his professional life in 1998. He and his wife, moved to Tucson AZ where they lived until 2008, before moving to Annapolis to be close to their children and grandchildren. In the 1970s, John joined Rotary International in Ohio and continued his Rotary membership in Alexandria, VA, Oro Valley, Tucson, AZ, and the Annapolis Rotary in Maryland’s capital city. He was a Paul Harris Fellow. In addition to Rotary, he acquired his Fourth Degree status with Knights of Columbus in 2006 and was a member of the Admiral William S. Benson Assembly in Maryland. John is survived by his wife of 63 ½ years, Mary Gabrielle, and children: John Herbert III (Claire), Mark (Pam), Michael (Karen), Julie Headland (John), Bridget Mills, Blaise (Deborah), Skye Westcott and Peter (Gemini), 25 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church, 701 Parkway, Annapolis, MD on , 11, at 10 a.m. Friends may also call at Taylor , 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, on , 10 from 3 to 7 p.m. John will be interred at Arlington National with Full Military Honors at a future date to be determined. |
