Obituary: Obituary Michael Joseph was born 17, 1951 in Washington, DC. A year later he was adopted by Connie and David Statland. He was raised as an only child in Silver Spring, MD. His parents were older, so he surrounded himself with friends. He was a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School and attended Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, DC. While there, he met and married Eva Marie Oates. continued their education as funds allowed and finally got degrees in accounting. In 1983 he traveled, alone, to Korea to pick up the two daughters they were adopting. With much help from the flight attendants he got Rachel and Amanda home to Maryland, and learned how to change a diaper along the way. He toiled as an accountant at the University of Maryland, Park for over 30 years. He was an avid reader. Before Kindles he had a book by the bed, a book by the chair and one in the car, just in case. He loved adventure stories, spy novels, but also different religions, the lives of the prophets, and military histories. There is a book of knots in his library. Eva used him as a reference for her crossword puzzles. He wasn’t afraid to try anything. Eva would come up with some idea and he would grab his tool box. He rode a Harley for a few years, until his back surgery. He had a black belt in Karate. He shot skeet at Isaac Walton, tried Cowboy Action Shoot, and always wanted to be a cowboy. He loved baseball. He and his brother-in-law traveled from state to state watching minor league games, visiting different stadiums. shared many a road trip. He didn’t like going to the stadium for major league games as they were too crowded and he hated cities. He loved his family, pampered Eva, and adored his girls. He attended plenty of games, recitals, marching band competitions, not just for his girls, but also his nieces and nephews and their sons and daughters. He was an even-tempered guy. He believed if you could affect the outcome, do it. Don’t worry about it. If you couldn’t, then learn to accommodate it. He was surrounded by an extended family that loved him dearly and we will miss him horribly. |

Obituary: On 27, 2015 Ann Elizabeth Statland passed peacefully in her sleep, after enduring a brave battle against cancer. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Loving daughter of Burns and Hilda Garrett. Ann is survived by her husband Samuel L. Statland, her daughters Robin Ann Robinson, Julie M. Statland-Greenberg, her sons Steven E. Statland, Andrew Burns Statland, her grand-daughters Emily Smarte and Rachel Smarte, and her grandsons Jacob Statland and Noah Statland. Ann was born in Washington, D.C. on 11, 1942. She attended Wilson High School and American University and went on to work for the Geico Insurance , Woodward and Lothrop, and United Bank. She was married to Sam on May 1, 1977. Ann lived in Kensington, MD and worked for the Montgomery Board of Elections. She was also an active volunteer with the Montgomery Democratic Party, The Episcopal for Children and Mobile Medical , Inc. Ann's adventurous life took her on many fun and exciting trips, including every state in the U.S., an African safari, and many travels through Europe and the Caribbean. Her love of helping others led to her recently receiving the Montgomery Central Committee's Dean-Peacock Precinct Official Award. She lived a life full of love, laughter, family, excitement and curiosity. Relatives and friends are invited to call at Joseph Gawlers Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Avenue NW (corner of Harrison Street) Washington, DC on , 31, 2015 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the Joseph E. Hagan Memorial Chapel at Joseph Gawlers Sons on , 1, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Rock Creek .
