Obituary: Mr. Spurgeon Aaron Bivins, Sr. died , 2, 2009, at his residence in Ozark, Alabama. He was 94. services will be held at 10:00 a.m. , 12, 2009, from Greater Sardis Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. James Bivins and Rev. Ralph Bivins officiating. Burial will follow in Sardis under the direction of Fuqua-Bankston . Visitation will be held at Fuqua-Bankston , 11, from 6-8 p.m. Mr. Bivins was born 2, 1915 to Mae Olivia (Levy) and John Bivins of Ozark, Alabama. Preceding him in death his wife, Ruth Vernell Whigham Bivins, and daughter, Verlia Agnes Bivins Mitchell Sherman. When Spurgeon Aaron Bivins was born in 1915 Woodrow Wilson was President of the United States. The cars had lanterns, not head lights; Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, a loaf of bread was seven cents, a car was $500 and a house was $1400. There was no running water, dish washers, indoor plumbing, tractors, televisions, fast food restaurants; there were running boards on cars and cranks to get them started. Trains, horse and buggies were the most convenient modes of transportation. He saw segregation, desegregation, and integration. He was among the first in Ozark to cast a vote for the first African American candidate for President Barack Obama and he cried when he won and became the First African American President. Spurgeon was a member of the Civil Conservation Corps of the United States which was knows too many as the CC Camp. The CC Camp was the civil support efforts during the war. He would serve as an ambulance driver for two years, nine months and twenty three days before he was honorably discharged. He would have many occupations during his 94 years and four months; he worked as a butcher, a plainsman at the saw mill in Ozark; he was a truck driver for the M.O. Carroll Grocery for thirty-five years plus years. The job that he was most proud was as the owner of his taxi service, the Bivins Cab Service. He would run his taxi service at night when everyone in town was closed. He also like to hunt and plant a garden. His mind was always sharp and he managed his own finances, paid his own bills, and drove a car up to two and a half months before his death. Spurgeon leaves to mourn his death, three children -- two daughters: Earnestine Bivins Smith Weeks, Las Vegas, Nevada; Joyce Bivins Watson, Silver Spring, Maryland; one son: Spurgeon Aaron Bivins, Jr., Ozark, Alabama; two sons-in-law: Thomas Weeks and William T. Watson; one daughter-in-law: Betty Ruth Bivins; twelve grandchildren: Edmond Drew Mitchell, Adrian Lamont Mitchell, James Edward Smith, Mathew Kendrick Smith, Cheri Weeks-Young; Angela Denise Watson, Anthony Dwayne Watson, Donna Denise Bivins Anderson, Spurgeon Aaron Bivins, III, Nichole Michelle Bivins, Courtney Bivins, and Andrea Bivins; granddaughter-in-law: Heather Nicole Pival Watson; grandsons-in-law: Al Anderson and Jefferson Young; twenty great-grandchildren: Heather Smith, Shaunice Smith, Kendra Smith, Sarah, Smith, Thomas Smith, Jefferson Thomas Weeks-Young, Lilith Grace Weeks-Young, Claire Agnes Weeks-Young, Philip Anthony Mitchell, Andrew Scott Mitchell, Avery Lamont Mitchell, Ryan Adrian Mitchell, Nicholas Paul William Watson, Alexander Jerome Watson, Keira Elyse Watson, Keerin Haynes Bivins, Cortez Bivins, Sasha Bivins and Dorell Bivins; three brothers: Ralph Bivins and Shelly (Buck) Bivins , both of Ozark Alabama, and James Otis Bivins, Baltimore, Maryland; three sisters: Sarah Bivins Gauldon and Betty Ruth Bivins Smiley Franklin, both of Ozark, Alabama and Edith Bivins Jackson, Clermont, Florida; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and two special friends, Kells (Rabbit) Sistrunk and Gussie Lee Dick. The family pays tribute to some very special people: Sarah Gauldon, his sister, and Thurma Lee Bivins Dubois, his care givers during the many months of his illness and also to Thurmas husband, Jessie Dubois. These three people gave up their homes and family to move in and take care of their brother/uncle during the last months of his illness and for that we are eternally grateful. We would also like to acknowledge Donna Bivins Anderson for taking him to his many appointments and sharing her life with him and last but not least Courtney Bivins for acting as one of his care givers and for relieving Aunt Sarah, Thurma and Jessie. Many thanks to nurses and care givers of Community Hospice of Dale Medical and his personal physician, Dr. Oliver Crawford. The Pallbearers: Clarence Smiley (nephew), Danny Smiley (nephew), David V. Bivins (nephew), Keith Jerold Anderson II (great-nephew), Jimmier Morris (great-nephew), James Ivander Anderson (great-nephew), Ralph Emanuel Anderson ( great-nephew) and Demetrius McClendon (great-nephew). Special Thanks The family would like to thank the sister of Spurgeon Aaron Bivins, Sr., Sarah Goulden, his niece Thurma Lee Dubois who devoted their lives to the care of their brother/uncle during the last few months of his life. The family also thanks Donna Anderson who took him to his appointments and Courtney Bivins who was the relief care giver when needed.
