Obituary: ELVIE G. PETERSON DATELINE: Portland: Elvie G. Peterson Trouvalis Swan, 96, passed away on 15, 2012 at the Barron where she resided for the past 2 years. She was born in Portland on 13, 1915, one of 10 children of David A. Peterson and Matilda (Adler) Peterson. Elvie attended Portland schools thru the 8th grade and then left school to help support her family. While working as a waitress at the Splendid Restaurant in Portland, owned by John Jack Trouvalis, she met her husband-to-be George Trouvalis, one of Jacks brothers. George, a baker, owned and operated The Supreme Bakery, now Reo Window Shade Co. at Woodfords corner. were soon married. Her husband taught her baking at which she excelled. In order to please him she took Greek lessons and became fluent in the language. Greeks were amazed at how well she spoke Greek. Upon the death of his brother, Jack, George sold the bakery and took over ownership & operation of the Splendid. A few years later George suddenly died. Elvie, 27, with 2 young children, George (5) and Sophia (2) and pregnant with her 2nd daughter, Georgette, took over the business functioning as bookkeeper, baker and general manager. She became known as Mrs. T and the Splendid became known for its wonderful pies and pastries. Four years later at the age of 31, Elvie was told she only had a few years to live because of a kidney condition. She had one kidney which never developed and the functioning kidney was diseased and soon would no longer function. Thinking she had only a short time left and wanting to spend as much time as she could with her children she took in partners, Arthur and Shirley Hawkes Whether a misdiagnosis or a miracle Elvies functioning kidney continued to fail but the other one developed fully and in 1962 the diseased kidney was removed and she lived on for another 50 years. Her son, C.G. Nick Trouvalis, remembers her generosity, not only to her family but to strangers. At Christmas time she and her children would visit families in need, presenting them with presents. Summers at the Trouvalis camp named Splendid View on Panther Pond in Raymond, were always looked forward to. Elvie loved to play horseshoes, swim and water ski. And could she do handstands and cartwheels!! While still in the restaurant business, in the early 60s she and daughter Sophia owned and operated the Pride Motel & Cottages on Route 1 in Scarborough. In the mid 70s she and her partners sold the restaurant and retired. 35 years as a widow Elvie again found love and married Ernest Ernie Swan of Westbrook. lived on Street in Portland for almost 20 years, during which time Elvie became a very good pool player. For the last 5 years of Ernies life, Elvie cared for him day and night after he had suffered a stroke. Elvie was the last of the 10 Peterson children. Predeceasing her were her sisters: Adelaide Anthony, Louwine Woodbury and Irene Fletcher, brothers; Burton, David, Earle, Elmer Pete, Kenneth and Roy Peterson, her 2 husbands and her 2 daughters Sophia Morris and Georgette Christoforakis. She is survived by her son C. G. Nick Trouvalis and his wife Anna, several grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-Grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation 17, 2012 from 6 to 8pm with Trisagion at 7:00 P.M. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins , 199 Woodford St. Portland. services will be held at the funeral home at 11am with Rev. Constantine Saranditis officiating. Interment will follow at Forest City , So. Portland, Me. Obituary: Dolores Helen Swan of Portland passed away peacefully on 4, 2016 after a long illness. Dolores was born in Westbrook on 27, 1930, the daughter of the late Harry and Emilia (Morin) Johnson. She attended Westbrook schools and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1949. Dolores met Warren G. Swan, Sr. at a YWCA dance and a year later they married on 9, 1954. Together they lived in the Swan family home on Riverview St. where they raised their four children. Dolores was employed for many years as a secretary in the front office at Lyman Moore Jr. High School. She later finished her working career as the Court Crier at the Maine Supreme Court in Portland. Dolores truly enjoyed the frequent family get-togethers at home or the family camp on Bonny Eagle Pond. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting, dancing the Jitterbug, and catching the biggest fish each year on Forth Debsconeag. Dolores and Warren loved to travel during their retirement years with trips to Aruba, Hawaii, and the western states. Dolores was predeceased by her husband of 59 years. She is survived by a son, Warren G. Swan, Jr. and his wife Patti-Jo of West Baldwin, daughter Linda M. Swan and her partner Kirk Rogers of Portland, daughter Karen E. Fecteau and her husband Timothy of Westbrook, and son Kenneth A. Swan and his wife Wendy of Gorham. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Matthew Swan and his wife Meaghan of Farmington, Sarah Swan of Baldwin, Kristopher Fecteau of Arizona, Nicole Fecteau of Windham, Jenifer Fecteau of Westbrook, and a great-granddaughter Lily Jordan of Westbrook. Friends and family are invited to a time of visitation for Dolores that will be held this , 10th, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM with funeral services at 11:00 A.M. followed by a reception for family and friends at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins , 199 Woodford St. Portland, ME. Burial will be at Dows Corner in Standish in the spring. In lieu of flowers the Swan family suggests memorials be made in Dolores honor to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research (www.michaeljfox.org). |

Obituary: Winnifred A. Swain, 78, of Skowhegan, passed away 27, 2014, in Skowhegan, Maine surrounded by her family. She was born 17, 1936 in St. Albans, Maine, the daughter of Horace E. Parker and Myrtle B. (Coombs) Parker. Winnifred graduated from Skowhegan High School in the class of 1955. She worked for several businesses in Skowhegan including Medwed, Norrwock Shoe Co., Larrabees Fish Market (in the late 70s) and her last 20 years working for Dexter Shoe in Skowhegan. Winnifred loved her flower gardens, doing crafts, playing cards, going gambling, harness races, and scratch tickets. She loved spending time with her family and she loved her grandchildren. She is survived by her five great-grandchildren; Makayla, Kallie and Mackenzie Quimby, Hailey Stearns, Owen Chisholm, five granddaughters; Erin Merrill and her husband Brent of Portland, Kaitlin Stearns and her husband Cory of W. Gardiner, Lindsay Swain of Palmdale, CA, Marina Swain of Denver, CO, Kristen Quimby and her husband Matt of Skowhegan, three children; Mary Merrill and her husband Mike of Skowhegan, Carol Steward and her husband Duane of Skowhegan, Leon Swain and his wife Elaine of Santa Monica, CA, two dear sisters; Mary Folsom of Madison, Turcotte and her husband Leonel of Norridgewock, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mom, dad, her brother Alfred Parker and her dear companion Julian Flum Laney.
