Obituary: Ernest J. Swanson, 96, of Grinnell, died on , 5, 2015, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., , 9, 2015, at the Smith in Grinnell. Music will be provided by Laurie White, pianist. Casket Bearers will be Dennis Swanson, Kimberly Shay, Daniel Swanson, Kristina Vainio, Laurie White, Lynnette Galloway, Jennifer Eicher, Jacqueline Eicher, Chelsea Swanson, Justin Swanson, Kendra Swanson, Jeffery Allen, Michael Quernemoen, Margaret Quernemoen, Stephanie Quernemoen, Sarah Nelson, Shanna York and Cale Swanson. Interment will be at the Ivy Hill in Malcom. A luncheon will be held at the Malcom Auditorium following the service at the cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the St. Francis Manor Foundation and sent in care of the Smith , P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Friends may call at the Smith in Grinnell beginning 12 noon on and the family will be present at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Ernest was born on 25, 1918, on the family farm near Malcom, Iowa to John and Lydia Hagenlock Swanson. He was raised in the Malcom area and graduated from Malcom High School with the Class of 1936. On 18, 1940, he was married to Hazel Olson in Waterloo, Iowa. The couple farmed northwest of Malcom and raised four children. Besides operating a grain and livestock farm he worked from 1977 to 1986 at the PEC on the campus of Grinnell Ernest and Hazel moved into the community of Malcom in 1982 and later moved to Grinnell. In 2006, they moved to Seeland Park to make their final home. He was very active in the Malcom community and served on the Malcom Co-op Elevator Board, the Ivy Hill Board and the ASCS Board. He also served on the Grinnell-Newburg Board of Education and he was a former Trustee of Malcom Township. He was passionate about his faith and his family. He chose to serve the Lord at an early age and was faithful to his choice until the very end. Ernest and Hazel were gracious hosts of the Malcom convention on their farm until they moved to the town of Malcom in 1982. He also enjoyed woodworking projects, traveling and helping out on the family farm. Survivors include his children, James (Diana) Swanson of Carrollton, Texas, Judith (James) Eicher of Waterloo, Iowa, Robert (Denise) Swanson of Des Moines, Iowa and Richard (Linda) Swanson of Malcom, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and three sisters, Ann Grinstead, Martha Hewitt and Esther Schraw. |

Obituary: Martha H. Swanson West Des Moines Martha H. (Berens) Swanson, 93, West Des Moines, Iowa joined her beloved husband Verner H. Swanson ( 25, 1921 - 10, 1992) in eternal life on ( 4, 2015). Martha was born 2, 1922 to John and Katie Berens of Burtrum, Minnesota, and was the sister of Bertha Besnett, Theresa Marty, and Rose Johnson. Martha attended Burtrum Elementary and High School, earning merits for her outstanding work and class ranking. She continued her education in Business training and worked as a secretary for several years at General Mills in Minneapolis, Minnesota before starting a family. She was married on 8, 1946 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota. Her spirit is carried on by her three children and their families: Curtis and Julia Swanson of Eatonville, Washington, Wendy Swanson-(Kennedy) and Dave Kennedy of West Des Moines, and Greg Swanson of West Des Moines. She was the cherished grandmother of Brian and Craig Swanson and proud aunt to several nieces and nephews. Her memory will be treasured by an extended family of relatives and friends from every walk of life. Martha was known to be a woman of love, generosity and vitality. Her limitless energy demonstrated her joie de vivre. She made friends easily and maintained contact with friends and family through her beautiful and distinctive handwriting. She often reminisced about her life in Missoula, Montana (where she raised her family) and her childhood growing up in rural Minnesota. Marthas childhood memories of being at Mound Lake and in Burtrum, Minnesota were truly similar to episodes of Little House on the Prairie (one of her favorite television shows). Martha was an avid reader of biographies, a political activist, gardener, crossword puzzle enthusiast and bird-watcher (she could often be seen and heard whistling to the cardinals in her backyard). Marthas beautiful rose bushes and flower beds were always the envy of the neighborhood. Of course, her favorite pastime was providing doggy day care for her daughters ShihTzus SnaxPax and Yahoo, who were her very loyal companions. Martha valued education and community charity work. She was active in the West Des Moines Womens Club, serving as Secretary and President for several terms. She also enjoyed being a Troop Leader Supervisor for her childrens Boy Scout and Campfire Girls groups for several years in Montana. Martha was a woman of strong faith and values. She engaged in volunteer and committee work at Sacred Heart Parish in West Des Moines and at St. Anthonys Church in Missoula, Montana, along with numerous West Des Moines Womens Clubs charity events. Her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Visitation will be at McLarens Chapel from 4 to 6 p.m. on , 5, 2015. A private interment will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, 1615 SE 14th Street, Des Moines, Iowa. In lieu of flower arrangements, the family would appreciate live flowering plants, rose bushes, or garden plants which will be re-planted as part of a memorial garden at her home. |
