Obituary: Ida Starnes, 88, of Grinnell, died on , 21, 2017, at Grinnell Regional Medical . A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., , 25, 2017, at the Smith in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Casket Bearers will be Jason Conn, Don Fleener, Trent Fleener, Brandt Fleener, Jack Conn, Kyle Conn and Glenn Baker. Honorary Bearers will be Denise Fleener, Tracey Conn, Morgan Fleener, Sara Badillo, Donna Keup and Dawnette Baker. Interment will be at Hazelwood in Grinnell. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning 12:00 noon on and the family will be present at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on . Memorials may be directed to St. Francis Manor Foundation for the Assisted Living and sent in care of the Smith , P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Ida was born on 26, 1928, near Chicago, Illinois to Howard and Frances Rhoades Carter. She was raised in the Chicago area, and later moved to Grinnell, Iowa. She attended Grinnell schools and graduated from Grinnell High School. On 12, 1945, she was united in marriage to Donald Starnes in Montezuma, Iowa. Ida and Don lived in Grinnell, where they owned and operated Starnes T.V. and Radio, Inc. She also worked for General Telephone of the Midwest. Ida was a member of the Grinnell Lady Elks and the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, baking and life on Lake Ponderosa. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. Survivors include her husband, Don Starnes of Grinnell; two children, Fran (Dean) Conn of Grinnell and Larry (Glenda) Starnes of Lake Havasu City, AZ; four grandchildren, Denise (Don) Fleener, Jason (Tracey) Conn, Craig Starnes and Sara (Carlos) Badillo; and seven great grandchildren, Trent, Morgan and Brandt Fleener, Jack and Kyle Conn, and Natalie and Emma Vega. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Donald Phillips. |

Obituary: Dennis D. Starnes, age 66, of Grinnell, passed away on , 24, 2016, at Grinnell Regional Medical after a prolonged battle with COPD. A celebration of his life will be held 10:30 a.m., , 29, 2016, at the Smith in Grinnell, Iowa with Pastor John Epperson officiating. Burial will be in Ivy Hill in Malcom, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on 28th, 2016 at the Smith and the family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated to the Dennis D. Starnes Memorial Fund and mailed in care of the Smith , PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Dennis Dee Starnes was born on 19, 1949, the son of Harold and Anna (Bach) Starnes in Grinnell. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School as part of the class of 1969. He was a hard worker and worked various jobs throughout his high school career including: McNallys and All Star Ford. Following his education, Dennis resided in Grinnell and worked for several area businesses including: Miracle Recreation, Farm Hand, the Super Car Wash and for a brief time partnered with longtime friend Gene Sheets in operating their own drywall business. He eventually went to work at Wenco Windows where he worked for over 20 years until poor health made it necessary to retire. In the mid-1970s he married Kay Clubb but their union was brief and the marriage ended shortly after. He started dating Marilyn McDonald in 1981. The birth of their first child, daughter Heather occurred ten days before his birthday in 1982. Shortly after the birth of their son, Michael, he was united in marriage to Marilyn McDonald on 9, 1988, in Grinnell, Iowa. Dennis was a family man and a stranger to no one. He was an outdoorsman who loved camping and fishing. During the summer weekends he could often be found camping in his favorite spot at Diamond Lake near Montezuma. He was famous for his outgoing smile and wave at all he encountered. He was also known for grilling skills. He could often be found over the fire at the campground making his signature breakfast of scrambled eggs with bacon. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan unless the Hawks were playing the Iowa State Cyclones, where his daughter, Heather attended college. He held a special love for his dog, Lady and grandson, Miguel. Dennis is survived by his wife of 28 years, Marilyn Starnes of Grinnell children: Heather Starnes of Grinnell, Michael Starnes of Grinnell, and Amber WheelerPhipps of Sebastian, Florida; one grandson, Miguel Ulloa of Grinnell and siblings: Don (Ida) Starnes of Grinnell, Jackie Seipman of Des Moines, Iowa, Dean (Joyce) Starnes of Lakewood, Colorado and twin brother, Dick (Kathy) Starnes of Herndon, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Jeanette Lender and Carol Evans, nephew Michael Seipman, great niece, Taralyn Taylor and great nephew, Landon Seye. |
