Obituary: Norma J. Spooner, 93, of Grinnell, died on , 29, 2016, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., , 5, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell with Rev. Len Eberhart officiating. Organist will be Juli Bey. Casket Bearers will be Nathan Ahrens, Joel Ahrens, Christopher Wray, Philip Carlisle, Paige Carlisle, Molly Wray Stark, Matthew Wray, Rachel Ahrens and Abby Ahrens. Interment will be at Hazelwood in Grinnell. Friends may call at the Smith in Grinnell from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. on and the family will be present at the church one hour prior to the service. Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Grinnell United Methodist Church, the St. Francis Manor Activity Fund or to PALS and sent in care of the Smith , P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Norma was born on 23, 1922, in Aitkin, Minnesota to Carl and Helen Hartman Lindblom. She was raised in Aitkin and later moved to Barnes City with her family. She attended public school in Barnes City and graduated from Barnes City High School. On 22, 1939, she was married to William Bill Spooner in Milan, Missouri. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm south of Grinnell. She was a homemaker and mother of five daughters but also worked as a certified nurses aide at the former St. Francis Hospital in Grinnell. Prior to her retirement she worked in the office at the Miracle Recreation . Norma was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Trinity Circle of the church and the Chester Royal Grange. She enjoyed traveling, wintering in Texas, gardening, caring for her pets and hosting family meals. Survivors include her four daughters, Carol (James W.) Ahrens of Grinnell, Jo (Larry) Wray of Grinnell, Christina Shilman of Burnsville, MN and Pamela Carlisle of Fort Worth, TX; five grandchildren, Nathan Ahrens, Joel Ahrens, Christopher Wray, Philip Carlisle and Paige Carlisle; four great grandchildren, Molly Wray Stark, Matthew Wray, Rachel Ahrens and Abby Ahrens, one great great granddaughter, Emerson Stark; one sister, Marie Sheely of Oskaloosa; and two brothers, Kenneth (Linda) Lindblom of Marshalltown and Gordon (Florence) Lindblom of Barnes City. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Patricia Lynne Fraker; two grandsons, Michael Fraker and James David Ahrens; and her infant brother, Donald Ray Lindblom. |

Obituary: James Vernon Spooner Ankeny James Vernon Spooner, passed away on 27, 2011 at Mercy Medical in Des Moines of complications following surgery. James was born 16, 1926 in Elkhart, IA to Earl and Agnes Spooner. He was the oldest of three children. James graduated from White Oak High School in 1944, then entered into the Marine Corps and was stationed at El Toro Airbase in California. James married Betty Williams in Alleman, Iowa and they were soon blessed with four sons. began their life together farming in Cambridge, Iowa. He was also employed with Keck Trucking. James and Betty then moved their family to Ogden, Iowa and later settled on a farm in Greenfield, Iowa in 1968. In addition to farming, James enjoyed a 24 year career with John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny, Iowa. Following retirement from John Deere and farming, James and Betty moved to Ankeny. James then drove a semi for Farmland Industries. In his retirement years, he also worked for Karl Chevrolet and Arnold Motor Supply. James and Betty enjoyed 63 years of marriage. With their love of travel, they visited all 50 states and 11 countries around the world, including 10 years on their Gold Wing motorcycle. Together, they were avid sports fans never missing one of their grandchildrens sporting activities, Iowa State Womens basketball games, or Ankeny Hawk events. James loved the outdoors, and in his free time enjoyed golfing, fishing and gardening. James is survived by his wife, Betty, three children, Craig Spooner of Denison, IA, Dennis (Diane) Spooner of Spencer, IA, and Marty Spooner of Ankeny, IA; five grandchildren, Angela (Craig) Derby of Cambridge, IA, Jennifer (Mitch) Prashak of Ankeny, IA, Heather (Brandon) Vess of Tahlaquah, OK, Shelby Spooner of Denver, CO, and K.C. Spooner of Urbandale, IA; two step grandchildren, Amy (Kirk) Johnson of West Des Moines, IA and Eric (Jill) Bidwell of Marshalltown, IA; three great grandchildren, Breyonna and Tyler Vess and Hunter Derby; three step great grandchildren, Karson and Amiah Johnson and Jackson Bidwell; and one sister, Wilma Thompson of Ankeny, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Boatwright and his beloved son, Mark. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, , 30, at Ankeny , 1510 W. 1st Street. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., , 1, at Ankeny . Interment will be at Elkhart . |
