Obituary: Paul (Junior) Spencer, age 82 of Moravia, died , 20, 2014 at his home in Moravia, Iowa. He was born 21, 1931 in Moravia to Paul Samuel and Lelia Pearl Pence Spencer. A 1949 graduate of Moravia high school, he enlisted with the US Army, served in the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954. On 2, 1955 he was united in marriage to Donna West in Unionville, IA. He graduated from Iowa Barber in Des Moines in 1956. Paul Jr. worked as proprietor of Spencer Grocery on the square in Moravia from 1956 until he sold the business in 2005. Four generations of his family were involved in the business, including his parents, his children, and two of his grandchildren. He served on the Moravia Volunteer Fire Department, the Moravia City Council, and the Moravia Fall Festival Committee and was a member of the Moravia Booster Club, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by both parents, brothers John, Edwin and Jack, and sister-in-law Frances Spencer. Survivors include his wife Donna, children Robin (Barney) Pepper of Walhalla, SC, Jim Spencer of Moravia, Susan Spencer of Moravia, and David Spencer of Austin, TX, grandchildren Jamie Knapp-Spencer, Jessi (Brad) Nicoletto, Josh (Sarah) Spencer and Paul Pepper, great-grandchildren Tyler and Karli Knapp, and Cameron and Madison Nicoletto, sisters-in-law Eileen Spencer and Darlene Spencer, brother-in-law Norman (Lillian) West and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 2 PM, , 28, 2014 at Lange in Moravia with Reverend Francis Warren officiating. Inurnment with military rites will follow in the Hillcrest , Moravia. A visitation will take place on at Lange in Moravia from 12 PM-6 PM, with the family present from 4-6 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Moravia Fire Department and First Responders and may be mailed to Lange , 1900 S. 18th St., ville, Iowa 52544. Obituary: Merna Jeanette Spencer, age 97, of Albia, passed , 1, 2016 at the Monroe Hospital in Albia. Merna was born 9, 1918, to James Oscar and Flora Alice (Roland) Jones in Knoxville, IA. She attended the Council Bluffs School for the Deaf. Merna married William Bryan Spencer on 25, 1939 in Winterset, IA. To this union 3 children were born, Larry, Leroy and Betty. Together they shared over 40 years of marriage before Williams passing on 13, 1981. Merna was a very dedicated and hardworking farmers wife. She always had flowers and loved working in her flower garden. She enjoyed all wildlife, especially going for rides to watch the deer and turkeys. She loved to watch the birds that would come and visit her feeder at the care center. She was also very talented at sewing. Her real joy in life was spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her children, Leroy (Marlene) Spencer of Allerton, IA, and Betty Nichols of Des Moines and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Merna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; a son Larry Spencer; a grandson, Christopher Spencer and 2 great grandchildren, Calvin Spencer and Justin Tackett service will be held at 11:30 a.m., , 6th, 2016 at Tharp in Albia, with Pastor Tony Angran officiating. Burial will follow services at the Mt. Pleasant in Rural Monroe . Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:30 a.m., , 6, 2016 at the Tharp in Albia, with Mernas family present throughout. A memorial has been established to the familys wishes. Mernas family wishes to thank all the faculty and staff at the Oakwood and Rehabilitation who helped and cared for Merna and treated her like family. Obituary: Maureen Mo Spencer, of Davenport, left this life at age 87 on 10, 2015. She will be cremated and requested no services. Her wish was that friends would have a celebration of her life in remembrance of her, to be announced later. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rungemortuary.com. She was born 27, 1927 to Richard and Alva (Gaghagen) Wernentin. She often said she was blessed to have had such wonderful caring parents. Maureen graduated from the then Davenport High School and shortly after married her long-time love, Jack Spencer. She worked for Dr. Milo Brady while Jack was a Scott Deputy Sheriff until he was hired at Iowa Wesleyan in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa as the basketball coach. resided there until Jack was appointed head basketball coach at the University of Nevada, Reno. were house parents for 400 girls for 10 years, forming many lasting relationships with their girls and Jacks players. retired from the dorm and continued to live in Reno until Jacks retirement. Davenport called them home eventually. Jack passed away in 2004 and Mo continued to live in their home. Maureen and Jack were passionate dog lovers and shared that love with their friends dogs and many dog charities, along with their many adopted dogs, some just came to their doorstep and stayed. Her hope was that people would adopt pets from local shelters and love and care for them. Mo enjoyed playing bridge and earned her Senior Masters rating from the ACBL. She also enjoyed playing golf with her golf buddies, feeding the birds and caring for her yard. She is survived by a nephew, Tim Wernentin and his family; a niece, Andi Conner (Curt) and her family and her half-sister, Pat Brock. Very importantly, she is survived by many friends who have shared her life and are too many to list, but they know how grateful she was to have their love and support. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Don Wernentin. A special thank you goes to her wonderful caregivers |
