Obituary: James Leland Jim Slagle was born 14, 1945, to Charles and Orlene (Siler) Slagle in Woodbine, Iowa. He was raised in Woodbine and graduated from Woodbine High School in 1964. Jim worked at the Woodbine Twiner during high school and he continued in the printing business in Neola, Omaha and Logan. He also did custom printing from his home. For 33 years he worked at the Nebraska Medical in the printing department. Jim married Peggy Corwin in 1983 at the Christian Church in Woodbine. The couple lived in Council Bluffs and then in of 1985 they moved to Corley, Iowa. Jim loved his motorcycle. He also enjoyed horseback riding, camping and attending horse shows. Jims favorite past-time was spending time with his twin granddaughters. Jim died on , 23, 2016, after a long battle with heart disease surrounded by his family at his home in Corley at the age of 71 years, two months, and nine days. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Bob Baker and father-in-law, Donald Corwin. He is survived by his wife, Peggy of Corley, Iowa; daughter, Megan (Shane) Phillips of Missouri Valley, IA; twin granddaughters, Whitney and Taylor; five siblings, Denny (Peggy) Slagle of Dunlap, Iowa, Linda Baker of Woodbine, Iowa, Rosa Slagle of Woodbine, Iowa, Steve Slagle of Harlan, Iowa, Ronnie (Konda) Slagle of Sac City, Iowa; mother-in-law, Bertha Corwin of Woodbine, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. |

Obituary: Maynard R. Slaght, age 95, of Dubuque, IA, passed away peacefully at 4:00 a.m. on , 3, 2015, at home, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Maynards life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on , 14, 2015, at Behr , 1491 Main Street, with Deacon John Stierman officiating. To celebrate Maynards life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m., on , 14, 2015, at Behr . Burial will be in Mt. Calvary , where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Maynard was born on 18, 1920, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Ray H. and Lucille (Hentrich) Slaght. Maynard was a Class of 1938 graduate from Dubuque Senior High School. He was a war hero, in the truest sense of the word, who proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1944 during WWII. Maynard obtained the rank of Tech. Sgt. and was stationed in England from 1943-1944, flying over 100 missions of which 68 were considered pure combat missions. His courage and bravery earned him 38 Air Medals for his valiant service; among them are the Presidential and Distinguished Unit Citations, 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses with Oak Leaf Cluters and an Air Medal with 2 Silver and 2 Bronze Clusters. He was united in marriage to Anne Rowan on 4, 1945, in Dubuque, Iowa, and they were blessed with 57 wonderful years together before she preceded him in death on May 26, 2003. Maynard was a hard worker and gave his best effort everyday, at St. Regis Paper , as a press operator for 35 years until his retirement. He was a humbly quiet man who constantly cherished his relationships with family and friends. Maynard was also an amazing storyteller and would so easily capture everyones imagination and attention with stories of childhood escapades, his experiences during the war, or even his pride of being a founding member of the Hawkeye Motorcycle Club. In his free time Maynard enjoyed fishing, hunting and was always up for a good game of cards. Maynard was an amazing father, excellent example of a real man and a true treasure of a human whom we were able to share 95 years with. His memory still remains, the echos of his voice will be heard for years to come and we will surely miss him everyday we must travel without him by our side! Maynard is survived by his children, Michael (Carolyn) Slaght, Cheyenne, WY, Steve (Kathy) Slaght, Dubuque, IA, Luanne (Richard) Davis, Rockford, IL, William (Lisa) Slaght, Fort Worth, TX, Lorie Leick, Dubuque, IA, and Andrea (James) Yeager, Dubuque, IA; his 17 grandchildren; his 24 great-grandchildren; and a brother, David Slaght, Jacksonville, FL. Maynard was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Doris Slaght; his loving wife, Anne Slaght; a son, Daniel Slaght; a granddaughter, Katie Davis; and two brothers, Lowell and Paul Slaght. A Maynard R. Slaght memorial fund has been established. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque, especially Elizabeth, Amy C. and Peggy, for all their kindnesses generously shown to our family during such a difficult time.
