Obituary: Verna M. Simmons, 84, of Victor, passed away with her family by her side on , 25, 2015, at the Mercy Hospice Unit in Iowa City. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., , 29, 2015, at St. Bridget Catholic Church with Fr. Brian Shepley residing. Visitation will from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on , 28, 2015, at the Smith in Victor, with family present beginning at 4:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Ronald McDonald House and sent in care to the Smith , P.O. Box 485, Victor, Iowa 52347. Verna was born on 21, 1931, to Frisby and Gladys Foley Reid in Gregory Landing, Missouri. She was raised and attended school in Keokuk, Iowa, graduating from St. Peters High School as class valedictorian Following graduation, Verna contemplated becoming a nurse, but instead went to work at a local bank. It was during this time she met and eventually married Earl Simmons. She and Earl would go on to have 8 children. Throughout her life, Verna held various jobs. the death of Earl in 1976, she enjoyed her time as a waitress at the Victorian Inn and also worked at Victor Manufacturing. Other than being a mother to her own children, one of Vernas great joys was that of being a House Mother to hundreds of collegiate females. She began her second career as Mom at Culver-Stockton in Canton, Missouri. She continued touching lives and caring for her girls at Drake University in Des Moines, Simpson in Indianola, the University of Iowa, and finally retiring after a time at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Verna enjoyed attending her grandchildrens activities, reading and playing bingo at the Senior Dining ; she was a proud Democrat and an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Those left to cherish Vernas memory are her children, Mac (Lynn) Simmons of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Tony (Kathi) Simmons of Columbus Junction, Iowa, Nick (Judy) Simmons of Victor, Chris (Annette) Simmons of Victor, Kelly Schultz of Victor, Joe (Marcia) Simmons of Victor, Andy (Marsha) Simmons of Williamsburg and Tim (Mary) Simmons of Des Moines; one sister, Jane (David) Schevers of West Point, Iowa, two brothers, Larry (Joan) Reid of Gulfport, Illinois and Bob (Terri Kay) Reid of Montrose, Iowa; one, brother in-law, Terry Dietsch of Montrose; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Mary Ann Riter and Judy Dietsch, and one brother, John Reid. |

Obituary: Paul Arthur Art Simmons, age 76 of Moravia, passed away , 16, 2015, due to an accident doing what he loved. Art was born 26, 1938, to Walter Elijah and Thelma Fern (Harnden) Simmons. He attended school in Moravia and later completed the Police Academy in Des Moines. He worked as a police officer in Carroll , Inwood, and Bellevue, Iowa. He married Daisy Millenon on 14, 1957, in Albia. To this union, 7 children were born, Paul. Glenda, Julie, Paula, Jeffery, Randy, and Christy. shared 28 years of marriage and later divorced. Art loved being outdoors, doing things such as fishing, hunting squirrels and raccoons, logging, and cutting firewood. He enjoyed the rodeo, riding mules, and pitching horseshoes. He enjoyed his dogs, Katie and Maggie. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball. Art enjoyed spending time with family and friends and especially enjoyed the Simmons family reunions, where he played his guitar and loved to dance. Art is survived by his children, Glenda (Clarence) Garrels of Hedrick, Julie Ackley of Udell, Jeffrey (Jan) Simmons of Dodge City, KS, and Christy (John) Flavey of Cambridge. Art is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; two sons, Paul, in infancy and Randy; a daughter, Paula, in infancy; and a sister, Mae Lavelle Smith. Per Arts request, his body has been cremated. There is no visitation planned and a private family burial will be held at a later date. |
