Obituary: Steven Nelson Seward, 92, of Whiting, Iowa, passed away , 27, 2014, at Pleasant View in Whiting, Iowa. services will be 2:00 P.M., , 30, 2014, at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa with Minister Jeff Thelander, Officiating. Burial will follow in the Whiting City in Whiting, Iowa. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army and American Legion Emery Johnson Post #481 of Whiting, Iowa. Visitation will be 1:00 P.M. until service time on at the chapel in Onawa, Iowa. are under the direction of Rush Family Service in Onawa, Iowa. Steven Nelson was born May 19, 1922 at Maple Landing in Lincoln Township, near Whiting, Iowa, the son of Jesse and Frances Fannie Mae (Delashmutt) Seward. He grew up at Maple Landing and attended country school there. Steven and Nettie Dell Boston were united in marriage on 11, 1952, in Dunlap, Iowa. Five children were born to this union. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He was stationed at Drew Field, a U.S. Army Air Force base, in Tampa, Florida. While there he took a test and was chosen to attend Keystone Schools Inc. in Pittsburg, PA. He graduated as a radio operator in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Soon after he boarded a big ship and began his trip around the world courtesy of the U.S. Army. Steven served in the China Burma India Theater during WW II. Steven was honorably discharged on 8, 1945 in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Steven received the following decorations: World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, Five Overseas Service Bars, One Service Stripe, Good Conduct Medal, and a Bronze Star Medal. He returned to Whiting in 1945. He worked with the CCC camp at Whiting, worked for Carl Smith on his farm and was a mechanic for Harold Sydow. He began farming and raising livestock for his aunts on the old Seward farm in Lincoln Township. He also did farming for Harold DuFrene and Harold Conway and later farmed on his own. Steven also attended a welding class in Sioux City, Iowa, and became a certified welder. He was able to repair his own farm machinery and did welding for several area farmers. His hobbies included: hunting, fishing, playing cards, watching boxing and baseball games on television, gardening and taking care of the yard, feeding & watching the birds, and visiting with family and friends. He also enjoyed sending and receiving text messages with family on his cell phone. Steven was a member of the Emery-Johnson American Legion Post #481 in Whiting, Iowa for over sixty-eight years. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nettie of Whiting, IA; daughter, Linda (Dwain) Walker of Whiting, IA; three sons, John (Deanna) Seward of Whiting, IA, Rodney Seward of Whiting, IA, and Ned Seward of Onawa, IA; six grandchildren, Jeremy Seward of Washington, LaDawn Seward of Onawa, IA, Stephanie (Eric) Warren of Whiting, IA, Bethany Mordhorst of Missouri, Alexis Mordhorst of Ames, IA, and Candace Seward of Ute, IA; eight great-grandchildren, Colby Seward, Daulton Johnson, Derek Seward, Nick Warren, Marshall Seward, Hunter Hane, Sydney Seward, and Makenna Hane; one sister, Frances Anthes, of Idaho; one brother-in-law, Roy Cardwell of Idaho; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Frances Fannie; an infant daughter, Bertha Eileen; four brothers, Gerald Jack, Frank, Lynn, and John; and two sisters, Gertrude Gibler Hurlo and Essie Cardwell. Dallas Paul Seward was born on 16, 1974, in Onawa, the third son of Bryan and Peggy (Wintjen) Seward. He graduated from West Monona High School in 1993. He had various jobs over the years, and most recently worked for CHS Inc. in South Sioux City, Nebraska. He was a member of the Whiting Christian Church. He enjoyed art, music, firearms, fishing, and watching football, especially the Oklahoma Sooners and the Kansas City Chiefs. Most of all, he loved spending time with his children. Survivors include his children, Margaret Janice Lynn Rost of Mill Spring, NC, Sierra Elizabeth Siebersma-Seward of Onawa, IA, and Dian Aaron Bryan Seward of Oakland, IA; his father and stepmother, Bryan and Roxanne Seward of Whiting, IA; his mother, Peggy Seward of Onawa, IA; two brothers and their wives, Jeff (Jenny) Seward and Curt (Kelly) Seward, all of Onawa, IA; two step-brothers and their wives, Curtis (Stephanie) Martindale of Turin, IA and Isaac (Amy) Martindale of Smithland, IA; and nieces and a nephew; many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Obituary: Betty J. Seward, 77, of Bettendorf, passed away , 13, 2014 at Genesis East Medical . Graveside services will be , 17, 2014 at 10:00 am at the National ., Rock Island, IL. Betty was born May 13, 1937 on a farm near Bussey, Iowa; the daughter of Raymond and Eula (Moon) McVey. The doctor arrived the next day so her relatives assisted with the delivery. She entered a large, active family which had some with handicaps such as a brother born with spina bifida. Later, younger members of the nine had other defects and needed much attention, so she helped as much as a young girl, who was the fifth child, could. they moved to a farm near Chariton, Iowa, she completed high school and graduated from Iowa State in 1959 and served a New York City area dietetic internship in 1960. She was united in marriage to James Raymond Seward on 7, 1961 in Rancho Cordova, CA. She had an active and had a career in administrative and clinical dietetics and had professional membership in the American Dietetic Association and then became a Registered Dietician as she moved and lived in various states. Her 26 ½ year career in dietetics ended in 1988 and she whole-heartedly concentrated on and enjoyed her family; aiding them in various ways. With a few piano lessons and a lot of practice, she became an accomplished pianist. At an early age, she accepted Christ at a revival meeting that she was invited to by her neighbors, the Andersons. She loved sewing and sewed dresses, curtains and even wedding attire, mainly for family. She leaves family: daughters:, Maggie (Glenn) Stith, Ankeny, IA and Scottsdale, AZ; Joyce (Keith) Hinman, Ankeny, IA; Janece (Rod) Hicks, Bettendorf; and Nancy Seaton, Coralville, IA; son, James (Amy) Seward, Ft Dodge, IA; thirteen grandchildren;; three sisters, one brother, one sister-in-law, and two brothers-in-law, also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, James in 2009; her parents and four brothers. She was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) in 1992. She was monitored by Genesis Oncology Unit from 1992 until 2005. In 2005 she was accepted into a clinical trial for CLL at the University of Iowas Holden . a severe bout of pneumonia, she left the trial research and continued her treatment in 2012 at the Cancer of Iowa City. In 2013-2014 she had her cancer treatment at Genesis Cancer Specialists. |
