Obituary: Clarence Stuart, 78 at the age of passing, graduated from high school in the American Zone of the Panama Canal in 1957, he received three important gifts. One was a partial scholarship to Taylor University in Marion, arranged by one of his teachers, an American missionary. From his father, he received $100. Then his father gave him a second gift: a one-way ticket to the United States. He told me, Son Ive done the best that can be done here, Stuart recalled, referring to his fathers career as a checker on the Panama Canal docks. He earned $72 a week on the docks – a moderate income there- and supported a family of six. With his fathers reflections in mind, Stuart moved to the United States, studied hard, graduated from Taylor, and when General Telephone Co. offered him a job, he took it. He climbed corporate ladders for 10 years until the dream of self-employment called him to the tool-supply business-one which he could enter with little capital. achieving his goal of self-employment, other dreams urged him onward. He entered the manufacturing industry with the same calculated method he used to expand his supply business. He turned problems into opportunities and focused his business on quality-from shipments delivered on time, if not earlier, to products that pass inspections the first time. Quality is expressed in nearly every sentence that Stuart eloquently speaks in the Kings English, taught to him by West Indian father. The 50 year old entrepreneur started his business career with five years in management at the phone company hen five more at Mutual Security Life Insurance Co. He left his management job to start his own business. I felt that if I could do a good job in the industry, I could do a good job for myself, he explained. Stuart looked for a business that required little capital, yet had a promising future. He found that a boom in the construction industry had increased the demand for tools. So he took a part-time job in the tool department of Montgomery Ward to learn about tools and how to sell them. A year and half later, he took a full-time job with B.R.E. Inc., which sold hand tools to maintenance departments of manufacturing plants. A year later, Stuart bought the company, then located in an 1,100-square-foot building at the corner of Maumee and Division streets. As the business continued to grow with a larger customer base, increased sales and a dedicated sales and management team. He was then able to move to a larger facility Sentry Supply Inc. on East Wallace Street with the help of a Small Business Administration Loan. While leading Sentry Supply Inc., Stuart later diversified into a second division which became Stuart Manufacturing employing 70 in a new 20,000 sf mfg. plant. This division was responsible for assembling hundreds of sophisticated electronic parts for the U.S. Defense Dept., U.S. Navy, ITT, and Magnavox. A strong believer in developing the surrounding community, many Sentry and Stuart Mfg. employees came through the Jobs Training Partnership Act . Stuarts dedication, focus and determination allowed this entrepreneur to turn a humble partnership in 1974 with 3 employees into two successful businesses with over 140 employees through his business career. A True Inspiration to All... Surviving are his loving wife, Dorothy Stuart of Fort Wayne, Ind.; sons, Clarence Stuart, III of Fort Wayne, Ind., Anthony (Shonda) Stuart of Chicago, Ill., Darryl Stuart of San Francisco, Calif.; sisters, Catherine A. Stuart, Lucille V. Dawkins, and Shirley A. Hudson; grandchildren, Whittney (R.J.) Harvey of Columbia, Mo., Clarence (Pam) Stuart IV of Maricopa, Ariz., Oliver Stuart at Purdue University West Lafayette, Ind., Zachary Stuart of Stanford University, Stanford, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Clarence V, Anniston, and Kal El. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence F. and Muriel Stuart; and sister, Erslua Pinky Pearl Simmons. Service is 12:00 p.m., May 21, 2016 at Good Hope Missionary Church, 809 Elmrow Dr., with calling one hour prior. Calling also at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park , 1140 Lake Avenue, , May 20, 2016, 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial in Concordia Gardens, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation. |
