Obituary: Donald D. Don Slater, age 87, of Peoria, passed away 9, 2015 at 2:57 p.m. at Unity Point Methodist Medical in Peoria. He was born Feb. 5, 1928 in Peoria to Robert and Margery (Dorsey) Slater. He married Marilyn Griffiths Aug. 26, 1950 in Peoria. She passed away Aug. 22, 2002 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by two brothers: Dale and Robert Slater, and one sister, Betty Dantone. Survivors include twin daughters: Deborah (Hugh) Guthrie of Peoria, Diane Barnett of Dallas, TX, one grandson, Brent Barnett of Peoria, one granddaughter, Michelle (Dave) Krumholz of Peoria, and three great-grandchildren: Max, Emily, and Will Krumholz of Peoria. Don was a WWII Navy Veteran and was on the USS Missouri at the time of the signing of the documents of surrender between the United States and Japan, ending WWII. Following WWII Don was a Ceramic Tile Setter in the Peoria area. He was responsible for tiling all the Peoria area High Schools and Illinois s swimming pools. He also put in all the tile at Methodist Hospital. He was a lifetime member of the Bartonville American Legion Post 979, the First Methodist Church in Bartonville, the Peoria area Brick Layers Union, and the Joe Robbins Masonic Lodge No. 930. Don loved to travel, especially with his two daughters. He was always ready to go at the drop of a hat. Additionally, he enjoyed attending church and doing service. Dons interests included fishing, golf, playing cards, and his garden. Don was proud of his military service and union membership. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends at the American Legion in Bartonville. Don was a great family man who offered unconditional love and acceptance to everyone. He was highly thought of by those who met and knew him. His greatest pride was his twin daughters and his two grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones and friends. Visitation will be 13, 2015 from 4 to 6 p.m. with Masonic Services at 3:45 p.m. at the Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel. services will be 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bartonville. Additional visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral services on . Burial will be in Lutheran in Peoria with Military Honors. Obituary: Dale R. Slater, age 87, of Peoria, passed away Dec. 26, 2011 at 4:50 p.m. at Heartland in Peoria. Dale was born Dec. 18, 1924 in Peoria to Robert and Marjorie (Dorsey) Slater. He first married Norma Hahn on 20, 1946 in Bartonville. She passed away Sep. 2, 1990 in Peoria. He then married Frances Bisson on Jan. 12, 1991 in Las Vegas, NV. She survives. Also surviving are Dales three sons: Dale Jr. (Lois) Slater of Las Vegas, David (Valerie) Slater of Peoria, Gary (Glenda) Slater of Topeka, IL, ten grandchildren, twenty four great-grandchildren, and one brother, Donald Slater of Peoria. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, two sisters, and one brother. Dale enlisted in the US Navy in Feb. 1942 and served in WWII aboard Aircraft Carrier Squadrons on the USS Ranger, Ticonderoga, and Shangri-La. His TBF (Torpedo Bomber) crashed in the Pacific Ocean near Japan in 1944 ending his active combat duty due to injuries sustained receiving the Purple Heart, and was discharged in 1946. Dale was a member of the Bricklayers Union and retired in 1992 from Peoria Floor and Wall Tile Co. which he owned and operated. Dale was a member of the NRA, and the Illini Muzzle Loaders Assoc. and member and past commander of the American Legion in Bartonville. He loved to volunteer at New Salem State Park and restore the parks cabins into working order. Dale had a private pilot license and loved to fly and restore WWII aircraft. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, and was loved by everyone who knew him. He is currently residing with his lord and savior Jesus Christ. services will be Dec. 30, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on at the funeral home. Burial will be in Springdale in Peoria. Memorials may be made to the New Salem State Park or the Disabled American Veterans.
