Obituary: Jason Scott Sundy, 51, recently of Pine Mountain, Georgia died on , 20, 2015 at Columbus Hospice, in Columbus, Georgia. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends and all who knew him. Jason leaves behind his parents, Roger and Neomia Sundy; his sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Tom Brown; his aunts and uncles, Ardeth and DeVoy Brooks, and Cynthia and Kerry Epting; his aunt Joan Alice Jordan; his nieces, Shannon McGinty and Annalee McGinty; his nephews P.C. Brown and Benjamin Brown; and a host of wonderful cousins from coast to coast. In addition, Jason had some very special relationships with his Significant Other Ann Marie Rogers, his sister Judy Scott Weingarten, and his Danish rothers Karsten Pedersen and Claus Madsen. Jason was born in DeKalb General Hospital, Decatur, DeKalb , Georgia on 18, 1963. He began life with the challenge of living with Down Syndrome. Jason met this and other challenges with joy and love. Jason loved many activities; vacations at Jekyll Island, travel across the country to destinations from California to The White House in D.C. to Maine, as well as Nova Scotia, Canada. He also enjoyed putt-putt golf, nine-hole golf, and bowling. Jason attended Fairhaven School on Springdale Road in Atlanta Georgia, 1968-69; DeKalb Training in Scottdale, Georgia, 1969-70; Robert Shaw in Scottdale, Georgia, 1970-1979; and Margaret Harris High School in Atlanta, Georgia, 1979-1986, where he received his Special Education Diploma on 11, 1986. Jason was baptized into the Christian faith on 8, 1987 at Oakhurst Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia by the Reverend T. Melvin Williams, Jr. Jason remained a Member of this church for the rest of his life and was a founding member of the All Right School Class. With the strong support of Jasons church and the Developmental Disabilities Ministries, Inc.__at the time an agency of the Georgia Baptist Childrens of the Georgia Baptist Convention Jason was enabled to move to the Hess in Avondale Estates, Georgia and live in that community independent of his family. Jason was one of the original residents of that home and lived there for 25 years of his life. It was there that he made many life-long friends among both his fellow residents and the home staff. Jason was employed from 1987 until 2014 by DeKalb Enterprises, Inc., a sheltered workshop serving DeKalb , Georgia citizens, where he had many friends and fellow workers. One year ago Jason said, I need my family. Since 23, 2014 he has lived with declining health in the care of his parents and other wonderful helpers at the family home in Pine Mountain. At 11:00 A.M. , 7, 2015, a Memorial Service will be held in the sanctuary followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall at Oakhurst Baptist Church, 222 East Lake Drive, Decatur, Georgia. Grave side service and interment will follow at 3:00 P.M. , 8, 2015 at the Oakland , Waycross, Georgia. Obituary: William Irwin Bill Sunderland of Sandy Springs died 10, 2017. He was born in Baltimore MD, to Lida Elizabeth Irwin and Pearson Sunderland on 13, 1929. He spent his early years in Baltimore, graduating from McDonogh School, and is an alumnus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh NC. He was a longtime resident of Sandy Springs and a founding member of The Church of the Atonement (now HECC). Growing up as an asthmatic, his childhood pursuits were limited to quiet activities. At age 7, given a bar of soap and a pen knife, he began transforming bars of soap into delicate carvings of animals and by age 12 won a national contest sponsored by Proctor & Gamble. Over time he progressed to larger creations in clay, wood and stone. As an adult he built a thriving cleaning business which he sold in 1989 in order to pursue his lifetime passion for sculpting. He traveled to Pietrasanta, Italy, to study under Pasquael Martini at the Lynn Streeter Marble and Art Institute. With this tutelage, he became an accomplished artist, skilled in the techniques of pneumatic tools. During his life, since that first bar of soap, Bill created well over 2000 works of art on a wide variety of subjects, inspired most often by his love of children and animals. His works are displayed from Georgia to Maryland to Scotland and have received numerous awards and accolades. One of his most cherished commissions was Friends Forever, a seated bear and fox, that memorializes the 16 Kindergarten children and their teacher killed in 1996. It is displayed in the town square in Dunblane, Scotland, where the victims are buried. Another is Memories of Gray, a life sized Italian marble creation of a young cadet embracing his pony, that honors the history and former military tradition of Bills alma mater, McDonogh School in Maryland. An artist in residence of Tate GA where he had his studio, he gave the community Learning is Fun that depicts a small boy reading to eleven animals. Carved from a 22 ton block of Georgia marble, it resides in front of the Pickens Library in Jasper GA. It has been said that in an age of tumult and terror where we yearn for tranquility, Bill Sunderland did not torture our souls; he touched the other side of our humanity. Compassion and simplicity was his soul. Out of solid stone he brought forth the honesty of animals, the faith and innocence of children, immortalized forever. We are fortunate that the small boy in Baltimore discovered his passion for sculpting and honed his skills so today we can enjoy the simplicity and touching love that his works display. Bill became his lifes desire, a master of marble, a sculptor of stone, with a heart of gold. Mr. Sunderland is survived by his wife, Gina Smith Sunderland; children, William Bie Sunderland, II (Judee), David Sunderland (Sandy), Barry Sunderland (Terri); Elisabeth Lisa Sunderland Henry (Jeff), Donald A. Andy Sunderland (Jolee); step-sons, Holden T. Hayes (Caroline), Mose Trey Hayes (Leah); 17 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brother, Richard W. Sunderland (Carolyn); and sister-in-law, Sarah Elizabeth Sunderland. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Brett A. Sunderland, and brother, Pearson Sunderland. The family will receive friends , 17, 2017 from 6 to 8 oclock at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
