Obituary: John P. Stevens, a native of Americus, Georgia and longtime fixture in Georgia banking and governmental affairs died peacefully on 28, 2016, at the age of 86. He died of natural causes, in the care of his family. Stevens was a man of letters, and though it is a cliche for some, he was truly a southern gentleman as well as a scholar. For more than six decades and during the administration of every Georgia Governor since Herman Talmadge, Stevens was a voice of knowledge and experience on banking law and matters of financial market regulation. Stevens, an avid pilot, was fond of saying that he was born an old man, when friends inquired how he was doing, his most frequent reply was, "Better than I deserve." Stevens lost his father Morgan Jasper Stevens at a young age. His mother, Maggie Sue Phinizy Stevens raised him to be self-sufficient and independent. He was a runner and played football and graduated from Americus High School. He attended college at the Emory campus in Valdosta and later graduated from Emory University. He spent summers during high school and college in New York working in the financial industry. He began his banking career with the then First National Bank of Atlanta in 1950, retiring as Executive Vice President of the Government Division of Wachovia Bank in 1994. John continued his second career as a public affairs specialist, along with his love, and second wife, Joyce Carter Stevens. The Stevens have both been regulars in the lobbying arena under Georgia's Gold Dome for decades together. Stevens was a leader in industries other than banking, including the textile industry and aviation industry, and his counsel and political backing were sought by Governors, House Speakers and members of Congress alike. One of his longest and strongest associations was with Georgia's longest serving House Speaker, Thomas B. Murphy of Bremen, Georgia. Stevens served in positions of leadership with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Bankers Association and Georgia Textile Manufacturers as well as a lengthy list of civic and charitable organizations. His great loves included quail hunting on the plantations of South Georgia, flying beginning with soloing at the age of 12, flying crop dusters while in high school and farming. Along with his wife Joyce, he spent many of his later years as a gentleman farmer of cattle and other crops at their spread near Monroe, Georgia. He always looked forward to having time to soar above in his Cessna or get on his favorite John Deere tractor to check the farm. By most any measure, John Stevens was a mentor to many, loving father, husband and extremely successful banker and public affairs professional. But those who knew him well knew that he was also a man of great humility. His often stated credo was, "Success requires no explanation, failure permits no alibi." Stevens is survived by his wife, Joyce Carter Stevens formerly of Adel, Georgia, his daughter, Alice Stevens DePass Miller of Athens and two grandsons. He was pre-deceased by a son, both his parents, and a sister. The family wishes to extend their deepest thanks and regards to longtime friends who assisted with John's care during a recent illness and his final days, including: Melanie Dubberley, Annette Maddox, Maggie Partee and Michelle Strickland. The Stevens are active members of the First United Methodist Church of Monroe, Georgia. The family invites friends and family to celebrate Johns life at a memorial service on , 13, 2016 at 11:00am at FUMC of Monroe, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to John P. Stevens' favored charities including The Building Fund of First United Methodist Church, 400 S. Broad Street, Monroe, Georgia and John P. Stevens Educational Trust Scholarship, Perimeter at Georgia State University, 3251 Panthersville Road, Decatur, Georgia 30034 H. M. Patterson & Son-Arlington Chapel are in charge of arrangements. |

Obituary: James Morris Stevens went to his Eternal Resting Place on , 7, 2016. He was 85 years old. He and his wife Elise married on May 11, 1947. He was 16, and, at the time of his death, James and Elise had been married for 68 years. James and Elise were beacon of light to the world of their loving family, setting an unrivaled example of how God calls His children to love and to serve one another. James was born in Macon, Georgia to Robert B. Stevens, Sr., and Minnie Beck Stevens. He had one brother, Robert B. Stevens, Jr. James was a career firefighter for the Macon Bibb Fire Department. He retired as a Captain in 1992. His career started in downtown Macon at Station No. 10, and he went on to serve 20 years at Station No. 3 in North Macon. As a young father, James was hands-on with his three sons. spent many nights with him at work, enjoying the brotherhood and family fellowship among first responders and their families. James grandchildren were also frequent visitors and welcome guests at the fire station, having fun sliding down the fire pole at Station No. 10, and enjoying the good cooking and company among the firefighters. James was not easily rattled. He could be heard on the fire scanner directing his crew and saving lives without a hint of anxiety in his voice. Even in a 5-alarm fire, James Southern drawl did not slow in his communication with dispatchers at the 911 call center. James was a hero. He wore a uniform, and lived his life embodying genuine service and protection to his community. James was a member of West Macon Baptist Church, and he and Elise were devoted to the Baptist faith upon their marriage to each other. James was a humble servant from humble beginnings, and, throughout his life, he never forgot this. During those early years, he was never neglectful in his service to God and family. James accepted Christ at the age of 12. Many of those who knew him as a young boy believed he possessed a gift for preaching and ministering. James was ordained as a deacon at West Macon Baptist Church in 1956, where, until his death, he was the oldest living deacon at that church. He later served as a lay-leader at Bellevue Baptist Church and, finally, at Mikado Baptist Church. James lived in dutiful alignment with Christs greatest commandment: You should love the Lord Your God with all your heart, all your strength, and all your might; and you should love your neighbor as yourself. He did not want credit for his good deeds, but he ministered to those who were sick and in need, not only in his career, but also in his personal life. He was a stalwart and gentle leader for his family and a present and active figure in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was entirely pure of heart, and beckoned God in prayer in such an earnest way that it almost seemed god was listening to Jamess prayers with a bit more attunement. James loved fishing with Elise. spent a great deal of time traveling overseas and around the United States upon his retirement, enjoying their life together. James was a man who took enormous pride in his home and garden. He and Elise grew beautiful flowers, bountiful crops of tomatoes and the hot peppers he preferred, and maintained meticulous lawns wherever they lived. James loved the pools he owned at his homes, and was always at work on them when he was not swimming. He and Elise loved their pontoon boat, and enjoyed entertaining their family and friends with delectable home cooking. he retired, James remained physically active and fit. He loved running, and won 1st place in the Labor Day Road Race among his age group when he was 60. His strength was something his grandchildren often chided him about. He was playful and joyous, and his family will remember him forever as a devoted husband, loving and present father, gentle spirit, funny personality, with just the right amount of charm. James is preceded in death by his parents, Robert B. and Minnie Beck Stevens, and his brother, Robert B. Stevens, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elise Gillis Stevens; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Lynn (Murkerson) Stevens, Mark and Deborah (Waters) Stevens, and Neil and Tricia (Trimble) Stevens; grandchildren, Jay and Christy (Gallemore) Stevens, Keri (Stevens) and Peter Lurtz, Monica (Stevens) and Chris Kirby, Molly Stevens, Caleb Stevens, and Colin Stevens; and great grandchildren, James Stevens, III, Garrett Stevens, Alexandra and Isabella Lurtz, and Peregrine Kirby. A Service will be held to honor and celebrate the life of James Stevens on , 9, 2016 at Mikado Baptist Church in Macon. Visitation will be held at the church at 1:00 p.m., with the funeral to immediately follow at 2:30 p.m. Reverend Ed Chambless, Reverend Neal Wall, grandson, Jay Stevens and Chief Marvin Riggins will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Macon Memorial Park. Macon Memorial Park has charge of all arrangements. The family would like to thank all those who were quick to respond to their call as civil servants and as brothers and sisters in Christ on the day of James death. Flowers are welcomed, and anyone compelled to make donations is asked to direct them to The Rescue Mission of Central Georgia. Visit www.maconmp.com to express condolences. |
