Obituary: Dr. Joan Marion Drye Stipetic, 80, died on 15, 2015 at Avow Hospice in Naples of pancreatic cancer. Joan is survived by her loving husband, Michael Thomas Stipetic and their children, Scott Stipetic of Taunton, MA, Mark Stipetic of Wilmington, NC, Chris Anne Stipetic Banks of Wellesley, MA and Teri Stipetic Pappas of LaGrange, IL. She is also survived by her sister, LuAnn Vorak, of McKeesport, PA, 9 grandchildren, and 13 nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her sister, Glenda Krien and brothers, Glenn and Ronald Drye. Joan was born on 13, 1935 in McKeesport, PA to Glenn and Marion Drye. She graduated from McKeesport High School and married her High School sweetheart, Michael Thomas Stipetic in 1953. Joan raised her family in Anne Arundel , MD and returned to school to pursue her degree in Education where she received her B.S. from Towson State University in 1968. She went on to receive her M. Ed. and Ph.D. in Educational Administration, both from the University of Maryland. She did this while working full time, first as a teacher beginning in 1966 in Anne Arundel , then as Principal at both Millersville Elementary and Bayview Middle Schools, also in Anne Arundel . In 1979 she became a Superintendent of Schools in the Pentucket Regional District relocating to West Newbury, MA where she worked until 1985. From there she worked as Superintendent of Schools at Groton Public Schools in New London, CT until 1991. She left Groton to work as an Associate Professor of Education teaching at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH until 1995. From 1995-1998 she was the Superintendent of Schools for Westwood Public Schools, where she retired in 1998. She worked tirelessly throughout her career to help advance teachers in their careers, developing many instructional programs towards this goal. She was a mentor and role model to many and was involved in many educational organizations such as the American Association of School Administrators, the North Shore Superintendents Round Table and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa. She was an exemplary leader of what women could accomplish, both as a mother and in her career. Joan loved to travel and followed her passion for the arts in the many cities she visited, frequenting museums, theatre and architectural icons. Most importantly, Joan was a loving wife, mother, friend and could be relied upon for an encouraging word or simply a big hug. She had lots of love to dole out, and dole she did! We were blessed to have her with us for so long, although, it just wasn long enough. May God Bless her! A Memorial Mass will be held for friends and family on 26 at 10:00 a.m. at San Marco Catholic Church, 851 San Marco Road, Marco Island. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Avow, Office of Development, 1095 Whippoorwill Avenue, Naples Florida, 34105-3847. The family would like to thank all the caregivers at Avow Hospice and Dimensions for all their tireless and loving support. |
