Obituary: Clarence (Stew) Stewart 1934-2015 Jaunary 15, 2015 in the early morning hours the rain came, the bell tolled, and the Green Frog went west. Dad was born in Drew, MS, in 1934, the first born child of J.B. and Cleta Stewart and raised for the most part in Isola, MS, true son of the Delta. At 13 soloed in a crop duster. He went with his National Guard Unit to try and go fight in Korea. When the higher ups found out he was only 15, he was taken to the highway and told to find his own way home. His draft number became eligible when he and others put an alligator in the pond at Moorehead Community in Mississippi. With his skills as a pilot he was offered a slot in the USAF Aviation Cadet program. He got jets! He was proud to be USAF Fighter Pilot career highlights included the F-86 that got acked into by the B-47 in the Tybee Island Broken Arrow, a high speed ejection at 38,000 ft. Had to prove he still belonged and he did. He loved the THUD. Was hit over North Vietnam, made it back to Thailand, another high speed ejection. 100 + missions over North Vietnam, and he dodged the golden BB, the ACK-ACK and a lot of SAMS. He went to Thud Rodge, The Red River, and would have gone to downtown Hanoi if they would have let him. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired at Eglin as a Lt.Col. in 1977. Dad was married to Patricia Ann Hudson of Beaufort, S.C. for almost 52 years. Her journey was with half her life taken up by Parkinson Disease. He stayed and enjoyed life with mom until her death in 2010. As a testament to dealing with the cards they were dealt, they traveled alone until the last 2 years of her life. He is survived by 3 sons, Clay, John and David to whom he showed unconditional love throughout their shortcomings, failures and successes. Six grandchildren followed along with 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his 3 sisters, Arline Walker, Charlene Kilpatrick and Betty Bervaldi. He loved them and their families. Also surviving are his three dogs, Blue, Roxanne and their puppy Delilah who brought him much joy in his last days. Dad liked to scuba dive and fish the Gulf. Cobia was his favorite, straight out of the grease. He was a Quiet Birdman, his musical taste were Marty Robbins and Janice Joplin. Dads family in Mississippi were direct benefactors of St. Judes medical help. Retired Lt. Col. Stewarts cremains will be spread over his late wifes grave in the Beaufort Baptist Church graveyard at 4:00PM , 28, 2015 on what would have been their 57th wedding anniversary. Quite Birdmen are invited. To the Air Warriors at Beaufort Marine Air Station an open invitation to all ranks. Squadron colors, fatigues and flight suits are welcome. The family knows that times are tight, so if you have any birds in the air around 4:20PM to 4:30PM could someone roll in, pickle the steeple and light the afterburner one last time for Dad.
